Gripping start to the fourth season
DVD_Connoisseur22 October 2007
At the beginning of the fourth season of "Stargate: Atlantis", there is the threat of death in the air for everybody on-board Atlantis as it floats through the emptiness of deep space. On a personal level, Torri Higginson's Elizabeth Weir faces a potentially unpleasant end due to the injuries sustained during the replicator energy blast. Is this curtains for Weir? As always, the cast of "Atlantis" are excellent and "Stargate SG-1" fans will be pleased to see Amanda Tapping appearing in the opening credits. How Carter will become a permanent member of the cast remains to be seen but it's genuinely pleasing to see Tapping continue playing her character on a regular basis.

"Adrift" finishes on an exciting cliffhanger and scores, for me, 8 out of 10. There's definitely still life in this series and it's good to see it back on the box.

A much darker season
sheila-8511919 March 2021
So much to rectify, even McKay is hard pushed. Good to see Amanda Tapping back in the main credits, however, sorry to see that Torri Higginson is on the way out. A temporary reprise due to the nanites is encouraging, but I can't help thinking it will all end in tears. Great to see that McKay has become almost a likeable character. Storyline is strong and computer graphics great. Very much how the Star Trek franchise gained popularity. By that I only mean, Star Trek original series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, with Voyager just squeezing in, however Kate Mulgrew as Janeway was cr.p. I digress, but all other so called Star Trek attempts would have Gene Roddenberry turning in his grave.

Confused Plot Line and So-So Acting
stevp1 October 2007
First I am not a big Stargate fan. I've seen a few episodes of both series but never got into it. Thus, I'm not sure about all the characters and their relationships and sub plots going on. But I do know good TV when I see it and this does qualify - barely. I was looking forward to watching this episode as I had seen the last episode of season 3 and enjoyed it. Also, I really like Jewel Staite and Tori Higginson from other work they have done and both are excellent actresses. As for the rest of the cast, David Hewlett is very good and seems to be in character the whole time, even though he is a bit annoying, in a funny way. The others, I really don't get yet. Joe Flanagan's colonel is very flat and one dimensional. The plot was confusing and had a lot of technospeak about their power source and shields and so on. I guess if I watched all the episodes I'd understand. But I was disappointed in the acting. Jewel had some good scenes and some bad ones, the good being where she was a serious doctor and the bad where they tried to have her inject some humor into her character. Tori was only in one small scene at the end, although she was unconscious for most of the episode and about to die. They seemed to be trying for humor and drama at the same time and it didn't work for me. I don't blame the actors so much as the creators, writers and directors. The humor just falls flat. This would have been great as a highly charged dramatic episode of life and death but the humor attempts cheapened it. Also, some things just didn't make sense. Why didn't the scientist and Flanagan take one of those little jumpers to repair that machine. And when he gets hit by the small rock, I'm sure it would have at least broken his leg and all his air would have escaped from the suit. Also those guys would not have died if they had just run instead of walking fast. Finally, all those jumpers went through that asteroid field and none of them got hit and no one died, despite all their protests that they weren't experts or used to flying these things. It would have been better if someone had bitten the dust so to speak. I'll keep watching, but I do hope it gets better.

Adrift
warzcokefinal8 February 2007
Well considering the title Adrift it could point to where season 3 episode 20 left off. Atlantis has been launched into space to evade the replicator laser. They have just dropped out of hyperspace prematurely and they realise this has to do with there ZPM being depleted. The whole of Atlantis is stuck without any planets or star-gates and no reference points. They have 24 hours of power left before they loose there atmosphere.

What plan will they think of next and why didn't they just use the beam as a power source for their shield. They could have done it the replicators could just a few gate capacitors and a medium and they could use the beam as a power source!.

Killing off protagonists will not save the storyline
herthh26 December 2020
And yet another Atlantian is slowly leaving the cast, and (pun intended) is leaving a gap in the story-line not filled up by its successor. This is not a way of achieving longevity of a show. In at least two cases writers and producers were than forced by popular demand to make the characters return as clones, ghosts, robots, whatever. Just do not kill the primary and popular characters in the 1st place.

good beginning of a great season
Aidonian1 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
season 4 adrift starts out good where we were left in First Strike, it picks up here. The acting was good, even that of Torri who was in a coma for most of the time. They did good by introducing Jewel's character in season 3 First Strike. Otherwise it might felt weird to have her there and not knowing who she is. Now we know who she is and why she is there. Elizabeth. Well I have always had a thing for her and she was a good and effective leader of Atlantis. It is a shame that she is recurring during this season. Two things can be noticed of this episode. Zalenka being hit with a mini-asteroid. It should have punctered his leg as well. He should have been bleeding more. Those experts flying the jumpers for the first time, did it better than they should have. Another user pointed this out and he's right. It felt forced that they were so good at it, even though they had no experience flying the jumpers. In order to truly get this episode, you had to watch First Strike and the remainder of the seasons to get where they were coming from and what they are talking of. Still they were of on a good start for this season. Can't wait for the DVD to come out.

A Let Down After The Great Season Three Ending
StuOz3 January 2019
Atlantis is lost in space.

This is not the direction I wanted season four to go in. The season three finale ended with Atlantis lost in space and I suspected and hoped the writers were going to take the series in a totally new direction.

Frankly, I am getting a little bored with this Stargate Atlantis (but I am still watching) so give us a new enemy that do not behave like fugitives from an old Dracula movie.
