Demetri Martin: I think it would be cool if you were writing a ransom note on your computer, if the paper clip popped up and said, "Looks like you're writing a ransom note. Need help? You should use more forceful language, you'll get more money." moreFAQ

Demetri's getting way too smooth, too predictable. The music hardly stops and it was an interesting counterpoint to break up the stand up when I first saw him do it a few years ago but NOT most of the time. Well into his thirties he is a little too old to go for 'cute', drag his relatives on stage and strike 12-year old poses.
Check out some of the early gigs on the bonus materials on this tape - he's edgier, awkward but there's a 'nervous energy' that's missing now. An excitement. What's really revealing are the deleted bits - his voice and movements are much more mature, he's more natural, he connects with the audience as a grown up person. It was like night and day.
The guitar, harmonica, bells and piano got VERY monotonous. It sounds like the kind of music children's toys used to make. Aaaargh. Martin's talent for a very particular kind of of one-liner gives you maybe one out of five zingers. He certainly doesn't take any risks here.
Since he hardly exists as a 'person' on stage he cannot grow as a person (check out Louis C.K.'s fabulous Shameless to see how a comedian can grow in a few short years). I was disappointed as I have seen many flashes of real talent early on in his Luna Lounge days.
