The title of Barney's play can be seen on the playbill of an audience member in the background. It is called "Suck It Lily."
This episode uses stock footage from Spider-Man 2 (2004), when Future Ted mentions off-Broadway theatre (at about 8:13). Actress Kirsten Dunst is visible in a blurred-out poster for the play "The Importance of Being Earnest", which is featured in the movie.
After her play Lily says that "Friends make each other feel good they build each other up and support them," Barney scoffs and says "Yeah, if you're a Smurf" Neil Patrick Harris would later star in the movies Smurfs (2011) and Smurfs 2 (2013)
At one point, Barney says: "Yeah, if you are a Smurf!". Neil Patrick Harris later appeared in The Smurfs (2011).
In one scene, Ted is seen wearing a t-shirt which has Hindu God Ganesha on it.
