Not the best pilot ever
greenylennon16 July 2010
I'm watching again Skins' first season, in original language with subtitles because Italian dubbing isn't the best we could hope for.

To tell the truth, this first episode is not very good since it doesn't contain any character development or heart under it. It simply shows a group of teenagers behaving in an hedonistic manner (exaggerated, but in some ways possible in the reality), without analyzing this behavior's causes. Anyway, this is only the first episode and there's a whole season that still has to unfold. Hannah Murray gives an hint of what her Cassie will be: I think she's the best actress of the cast, and she's also given the most interesting character.

I still can't forget the first minutes, with a silent Effy sneaking in home after a wild night out.

Tony is the self-appointed head of his small clique of friends in this new UK teen dramady. In the pilot episode he makes it his task to get his chum, Sid, laid at a party before his 18th birthday. Things don't go nearly as planned. After viewing this premiere I found myself likening the show as kind of "My So-Called Life" meets "Degrassi" with tits and cuss words. I was hooked though and would continue to watch the series, even though all the characters are a tad on the stereotypical side thus far.

My Grade: B+

Eye Candy: the actress playing Miriam provides the T&A for this episode

Unsteady opening episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Ep 1 - This is sort of the pilot and isn't exactly perfect. It's meant to be Tony's episode but it has to juggle introducing all the other characters too and setting the plot moving. The most important thing story wise we learn in this episode is Tony and Sid are best friends, Sid is hopelessly in love with Tony's girlfriend Michelle but he has got no chance. We also learn early on that Tony has some pretty unattractive character traits, despite being handsome, clever, confident and a compelling character he's also narcissistic, manipulative and deep down seems to care little about his mates. They are primarily there as an audience for him, that's why his best friend remains someone who he'll make sure is forever in his shadow. The episode begins as they often do with the main character in bed, about to get up and head into School. Tony's little sister Effy has been out all night partying and is heading home with her parents unaware as R&B music plays. Tony helps make a distraction while she slips in. On the surface it may look like he's being a good older brother here, but in reality he's not, it's a sign of bad a role model he is for her and how bad an influence he's having that he agrees to help her like this. The scene also demonstrates too that Tony enjoys tormenting his dad too, which he continues to do. It's all done in a couple of scenes and is so much more interesting than the parents just sat around the breakfast table complaining about Tony's behaviour and what a poor example he's setting for his sister. Again it might seem like some teen fantasy, tormenting your irate dad and so on, something we're meant to laugh along with but it also hints at a more sadistic side to Tony. He and Effy exchange a knowing look but she stays mostly silent and aloof. Tony's mother seems much smoother and more relaxed than the dad. This opening scene tells you that Tony's main form of entertainment is playing games with people, manipulating them and having fun at their expense. It's an important point which comes up again throughout the season. The next scene has Tony call each of his friends to find out if they are able to come to a party later on, it's a nice clever way to introduce everyone and establish a little their personality and their relationship to Tony. Another funny little clip is Sid looking at pictures of Michelle on a bus journey while the older man behind him peers over. Episode 1 does have it's flaws though. The characters do come across as on the surface pretty shallow, selfish, all they want to do is party, with the exception of Jal. It's not until Episode 2, 3 and 4 that you start to get more into the characters of Cassie, Jal and Chris to find out about their deeper issues and home lives. The episode briefly touches on some kind of social class commentary. There's a firm divide established between our gang and the posh private all-girls school near by. Only Tony seems able to bridge the gap. One girl in particular Abbi seems particularly interested in him. The episode involves them though party crashing, starting a fight, stealing some phones, then stealing a car and driving it into a river. This of course all happens without any consequences for anyone. It's the kind of stuff which makes the critics wag their fingers. As the show goes on you start to realise that actions do have consequences. At this point the adult characters we meet are largely comical, the mad drug dealer, the irate parents, the peevish pompous French teacher at the posh school. The pilot sort of feels like the cast and the writers were still trying to work out what the show was about and how likeable to make the characters.

Disappointingly OTT
jejejones2 February 2007
I found this pilot to be rather depressing, it gave out a really bad view of teenagers. Parts of it were cool to watch but other parts were dead boring! The characters weren't very interesting at all, but the acting was variable. Disappointing acting by Nicholas Hoult, but some other people seemed a lot better and I look forward to seeing more of them. I really don't like the view of teenagers this programme sends out, how badly it pretends they ALL behave ALL the time. Probably younger teens will watch it and think they have to behave like that - not good! All the teenagers I have spoken to about the show have agreed it is extremely exaggerated and over the top and it's disappointing that younger children and adults will now get this impression of teenage behaviour.

Virginity and Wild Parties
vivianla26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We see a disheveled looking teenage girl walking home. Her brother watches from the window. Her brother is in white boxers and has his attention on the girl across the street who is completely nude at the window. The boy is pretty cute with bright blue eyes and brown hair.

The siblings manage to trick their dad as they calmly eat their breakfast.

The cute boy manages to get ahold of his nerdy friend to discuss the plan tonight on losing his virginity at a party. The cute boy needs to make sure he loses his virginity to continue being friends with him.

At a cafe the two boys plan. A girl walks towards them and the nerdy boy wrongly assumes he is going to have sex with her. He stares openmouthed at her exposed legs and look at her body. The cute boy makes out with the girl. She gives him a handjob over his beige pants.

The nerdy boy arrives at a house where a woman in lingerie opens the door. Another woman comes down the staircase with her breasts popping out of her bra.

The cute boy is dismayed to find out not as many people are going to the party. The nerdy boy has met with the dealer who fondled his crotch in a threatening manner. The nerdy boy says he has three ounces not one ounce of drugs. They need to sell all the ounces.

When the four of them enter the house party they are invited in by the owner who is a rich girl. She tells them to take off their shoes as her mother bought an imported carpet.

They turn on "ghetto" rap music and proceed to dance. One busty girl with an accent talks in a foreign language to the owner. She jokes that the nerdy boy has a small penis.

We see one boy masturbate under the covers roughly to some asian magazine.

At the gay party it is very empty - we see a few at the bar and two gay men dancing. The three boys that include the indian get up to go to the house party.

The boys arrive at the party scene and strip off their tops. The girl with the accent declares the real men have arrived and also strips to reveal her bra.

The emotional teacher wears a very low top exposing her cleavage.

The group makes fun of one boy who had previously once shown his penis. His penis was small they said.

Anwar pees on a tree and tells the group in the car not to look at him.

At the end we see the woman standing naked at the window and looks out for the cute boy. Her husband, the headmaster of the school says that she must want the neighbours to see her.

The two boys lie side-by-side on the bed with the nude bodies on the cover. One asks the other if the two other kids (one being the Polish girl) got out of the water. The other replies he thinks so and asks the boy about his virginity. He is still a virgin.
