Intriguing but ultimately too deliberately difficult and inaccessible
I criticised one of the Animate! shorts this year for being so simplistic and obvious that it was annoying to wait for it to do what you already knew it was going to do. Conversely then, Nose to Mouth does just the opposite by never really helping the viewer understand the point for one second. Maybe it was just me but I just didn't get the story and the only vague theme I could pick up was that the main character was trying to learn "normal" skills such as typing and ice skating. She has her own talent but she does little with it, while the mole that stands out on face is something she would rather not have.
Whether this is the point or not, the film certainly doesn't help itself and instead seems to be more interested in delivering each scene in a rather weird and cool fashion. This means the film is more about the moment and it is good that there are a handful of moments that do hold the interest for one reason or another. As animation it doesn't actually have a lot in it since most of it is real footage, but it does use a range of styles to good effect photo montages, models, computer graphics however it is the well framed and set-up shots in the real footage that were the more imaginative and appealing.
Whether this is enough for it to be worth watching is very much a matter for the individual. Personally I found it interesting and intriguing while I was watching it but ultimately was a bit annoyed by how impenetrable it was across the twenty minutes.
