German director Volker Schlöndorff, who won the Cannes’ Palme d’Or and an Oscar for his 1979 drama “The Tin Drum,” is set to direct a film about how Antonio Vivaldi — the 18th-century Italian composer of “The Four Seasons” — formed what is touted as the world’s first all-female orchestra.
Schlöndorff’s still-untitled depiction of this lesser-known aspect of Vivaldi’s career is based on a book by German writer Peter Schneider, which has been adapted for the big screen by Italian scribe Francesco Piccolo (“My Brilliant Friend”) along with the director.
The plan is for cameras to start rolling later this year on the film, which will mark the first foray into Italian-language cinema by Schlöndorff, who is a fluent speaker. It will be shot entirely in Italy. Casting is still being decided, and sales are likely to be launched at the Cannes market in May.

Mid-July doesn’t exactly constitute the dog days of summer, but for parents with kids to keep entertained it’s certainly close enough. Universal Pictures is looking to bring the Shrek franchise (along with Puss n' Boots) back to life with a "reboot" of the iconic Ogre and have chosen Despicable Me's producer to take charge of it. Come inside for more information!
It's crazy to think that the last Shrek movie we got, Shrek Forever After, was nearly ten years ago. I mean, I don't think of the first Shrek film as being all that old, but here we are. After all that time it seems inevitable that the series is getting a reboot. Variety has the report that Chris Meledandri, the producer behind many of Illumination Entertainment's most popular films, has been tasked by Universal Pictures to bring the Shrek franchise, which includes the Puss n' Boots spin-offs, back to life.
It's important to emphasize, despite the verbage used, that this is seemingly being tooled as a revival and not an actual reboot.

It’s hard to believe that the Flashback Weekend horror convention in Chicago is already turning 15 years old, but Mike and Mia Kerz, the founders behind the long-running event, are pulling out all the stops to make sure this year’s show is a great experience for attendees, especially if you’re a fan of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series (and who isn’t, really?).

You all know Katherine Isabelle for her work in films like the Ginger Snaps trilogy (2000 – 2004), Freddy Vs. Jason (2003), Ogre (2008), 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days (2010) and countless other film & television roles. But it was in 2012 that she struck a particular nerve with horror fans around the world with her starring role in Jen & Sylvia Soska’s American Mary, where she played Mary Mason, a medical student who … Continue reading →

The weekly round-up (with a few additional bits coming tomorrow):
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talked to Syfy's Mark Stern at the Winter TCA Press Tour and they have an update on Blood and Chrome. Kind of, anyway. Here is what he says (more at the link):
Is the project dead? Read more after the jump. ...
"No not at all," said Syfy original programming president Mark Stern. "We're trying to figure out the economics right now. I love it but we're trying to put various things together to see how we're going to get it made. My hope is we get it figured out." (...)
Stern said the pilot was a good test to prove the technology could be used in series, although he acknowledged it will likely take a year to get the show on air after it's ordered due to the amount of post-production work that will be required on every episode.

The Mongolian Death Worm is a creature of cryptozoology purported as being a bright red worm up to five feet long capable of spewing sulphuric acid and emitting a paralyzing electric discharge. One look at the sneak preview Syfy has posted for its new Mongolian Death Worm movie indicates the filmmakers just watched the bug ravine scene from Peter Jackson's King Kong remake and made a movie about those giant head-devouring worms instead.
When an American oil company sets up an experimental drilling plant out in the vast deserts of Mongolia, they awaken a nest. The deadly creatures begin to breed and spread, devouring everyone in their path. The only person who can stop them is a treasure hunter and adventure seeker who spent his life searching for a legendary tomb, fabled to be protected by the Death Worms. He knows he must do what he can to kill the creatures,...

We now have a new favorite title for a Syfy original movie: Mongolian Death Worms! But bear in mind that they didn’t make up that moniker; it seems the Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptozoological species that has been reported and investigated for decades now, which makes it a surprise that Syfy didn’t catch up with it sooner.
The Worm supposedly ranges from 2 to 5 feet long and lives under the sands of the Gobi desert, from which it emerges to kill its prey via either spitting caustic acid or launching electrical shocks. As for its movie incarnation, Mongolian Death Worms recently lensed in Dallas, TX for Ogre and Wyvern director Steven R. Monroe, who scripted with Sea Beast’s Neil Elman. Veteran actor-turned-filmmaker Andrew Stevens produced, with Masters Of Horror: The Damned Thing’s Sean Patrick Flanery, House Of The Dead 2’s Victoria Pratt, George Cheung...

At the recent Monster Mania convention in New Jersey, Fango got a few words with Katharine Isabelle, the actress beloved by fright fans for her starring turns in the Ginger Snaps films. She’s got a pair of genre features coming up: Hard Ride To Hell, lensing in Vancouver for Spike TV, and Uwe Boll’s latest ode to violence, Rampage.
Hard Ride is directed by Penelope Buitenhuis and also stars Robocop’s Miguel Ferrer and Laura Mennell of Trick ’R Treat and Watchmen. “It’s about an old curse and demon bikers,” Isabelle tells us. “I literally have only scanned the script because I just got it last week. I have a pretty large part in it—at least, I don’t die till the very end.”
She also expires in Rampage, which stars Brendan Fletcher (who co-starred with Isabelle in the Ginger Snaps sequels as well as Freddy Vs. Jason...

John Schneider, Katherine Isabelle, Chelan Simmons, and a hulking computer-generated ogre with bitch tits: it must be a Sci-Fi Channel original movie! And it was. Premiered this past March. Now you'll be able to own Ogre (review) on DVD this coming March.
Ogre stars Ginger Snaps' Katherine Isabelle as one of a small group of twenty-something's investigating an old legend of a lost town who happen upon the town that turns out to be lost in a time warp. It's also cursed by an ogre that emerges every winter solstice to collect its sacrifice. John Schneider, of all people, is the resident power-hungry warlock looking to sacrifice these interlopers from modern times. Final Destination 3's Chelan Simmons is the good daughter looking to save them from an ogre-munching death and break the town's curse in the progress.
As I stated in my review of Ogre, that ogre is the true star of the film,...
