Great and Interesting Interview

Clive James Meets Roman Polanski (1984)

This interview was filmed for the London Weekend Television and originally aired right before the Roman Polanski film REPULSION. In the interview, Clive James and Polanski have a casual discussion during dinner where they talk about the director's movies, his life and of course the two major cases in his life.

If you're a fan of Polanski then this here is a terrific interview as he really opens up about various things including his relationship with Sharon Tate as well as her murder. He also opens up about the rape scandal and his attraction to young girls. If you don't like Polanski then you'll have a field day with the stuff he says here as he pretty much defends his desire for young women.

The movie talk deals with CHINATOWN, KNIFE IN THE WATER and of course ROSEMARY'S BABY. The movie discussion is nice but there's no question that the fireworks happen when they are discussing Polanski's leaving America. You can tell the director gets quite heated over the questioning but it's a fascinating look into his thoughts during this period.

This documentary was used by the prosecutor Tom Shields at the Polanski libel case against the magazine Vanity Fair in 2005, in which Polanski discussed at length his liking for young girls - although he said he had not broken the law since being charged for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in the US. The article in Vanity Fair claimed Polanski had tried to seduce a "Swedish beauty" in the fashionable New York restaurant bar Elaine's, delivering a "honeyed spiel" as he slid his hand between her thighs and promised to turn her into "another Sharon Tate". The Vanity Fair editor, Graydon Carter, who was in court throughout the trial, said he found it "amazing" that "a man who lives in France can sue a magazine published in America in a British court".
