Goyband (aka Falling Star): A Thoroughly Entertaining Movie
mebenik329 April 2010
This movie is the perfect vehicle for the extremely talented Adam Pascal (best known for originating roles in Rent and Aida on Broadway) as it allows him to sing, dance, and act. Pascal stars as Bobby Starr, a washed up 1990s boy band star who has been struggling as a solo artist (he can barely even book gigs at a local bowling alley). All of that changes when his biggest fans (Rebekka, played by Amy Davidson, and her friends) get him the break he has been looking for: a chance to perform at the Mazel Hotel. The film is a Jewish musical version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with lots of references to "Fiddler on the Roof" thrown in. I enjoyed that this movie was unpredictable, and it is one of the best low budget, independent films I have seen. I would definitely recommend it!

Spoiler alert: and I really like this little film

Warning: Spoilers
I don't watch a lot of indie movies, but I was looking for some interesting takes on Judaism and put this on my netflix list. And then I waited for what seemed like forever...Finally, I just bought it and I'm glad I did.

I don't want to say to much, because it was fun to watch a movie fresh.

My wife and the kids seem to love it - it's definitely a film you can play for the whole family. It's a really sweet story, you worry about the characters, you know? And the end, well, it's unexpected. The twist seemed real, like real people would do that, you know? (I don't know if that qualifies as a spoiler..)

Also: I wish I could buy the soundtrack - I have that theme song stuck in my head - and I really liked hearing all those Jewish melodies updated!

A fun film about the old Borscht Belt
pyotr-316 March 2012
I love this movie. It was made with a low budget, yes, but it's more entertaining than most huge budget films, and it has a terrific cast! Adam Pascal is incredibly talented, and here he has enormous charm and humor as well.

Few films have captured the Borscht Belt days of the Catskill resorts as well as this one. "Mr. Saturday Night" with Billy Crystal also captures this era well. Sadly, most of these resorts have closed their doors now, but these films give a fun glimpse of the fabulous resorts that once nurtured generations of America's greatest comedians and musicians.

This movie is a fun way to spend a couple of hours, and you'll be glad you saw it. I don't understand why some people rate this great little movie so well. I suspect that this has more to do with those people wanting big, flashy Hollywood foolishness. As for me, I give this movie 10 stars for its clever story featuring truly talented actors and a nice, wholesome story that even a vulgarian like myself can enjoy!
