What’s the one thing Ghost in the Shell, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist and Netflix’s forthcoming Death Note adaptation have in common? Barring the fantastical story elements and built-in fanbases, all four high-profile productions have been accused of whitewashing major characters, which has led many to call Hollywood’s representation of Asian people into question.
And so, after the casting of Danny Rand and The Major (Aka Motoko Kusanagi) fuelled heated debate online, the Internet’s eye of scrutiny has turned toward Death Note after Nat Wolff landed the role of Light Yagami in the morbid Netflix original. Because of the IP’s Japanese roots, many consider the decision to go with Wolff in lieu of an Asian actor to be in poor taste – or worse, overtly racist – but seasoned producer Roy Lee firmly believes that Netflix’s star-studded rendition of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s iconic manga...

Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity – six brilliant residents of Ponyville who come together for a big, big announcement in today’s first teaser for My Little Pony: The Movie.
Arriving by way of Lionsgate, the animated pic is packed to the rafters with top-tier Hollywood talent, with Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber, Michael Peña (Ant-Man), Sia, Taye Diggs, Uzo Aduba, and Zoe Saldana poised to take point in the voice booth. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, there’s also word that Sia, the award-winning artist best known for “Elastic Heart” and “Chandelier,” has penned an original song for Jayson Thiessen’s picture, and we all know how lucrative these properties can be following the success of Paramount’s Trolls and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” last year.
Can My Little Pony: The Movie achieve a similar box office feat?...

Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets spooky as we meet the team’s new boss - a heroic blast from Marvel’s past...

4.1 Meet The New Boss
I’ve been recapping Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for Den Of Geek Us since the premiere. To be honest, while I still enjoyed the series immensely last year, it was kind of a chore (I know, first world nerd problems). Every episode was pretty much the same. Inhumans machinations and intrigue and Hydra, Hydra, Hydra. The show was enjoyable, but it was rather hard to write about. Maybe that’s why I’m really enjoying this new direction Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is taking. The focus on the supernatural and the rebuilding of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a post-Civil War world has brought a new lease of life to Marvel’s inaugural TV series.

Filming on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming continues full steam ahead this week, as set photos and videos continue to make their way online. While we’ve still yet to see an official image from the upcoming movie, we have seen a healthy amount of leaked set footage, and this latest batch has managed to whet our appetites for Spidey’s next adventure yet again.
While they don’t reveal anything particularly exciting, we do get a great look at the hero’s costume, which is new and improved thanks to Tony Stark. We also see star Tom Holland swinging around New York and hanging out on set, but as usual, the context of the scene being filmed is unknown.
There’s not much else of note here, but you can check it all out for yourself below and decide if it’s worthy of any attention:

Amazingly, Marvel Studios has yet to release so much as a single official image from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Chances are that they want to keep the focus on Doctor Strange and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer, but with the reboot set to be released next July, something from it will surely be with us before Christmas. For now though, we do at least have set photos and videos! These come from Queens in New York, but what exactly is going on is hard to say. In the detailed photos from Just Jared, the hero appears to be spending some time in the suburbs. The set videos meanwhile show the wall-crawler chomping on an apple and chatting on the phone before he swings away. With shooting in the city ongoing, expect more content like this to keep on coming this week. Tom Holland walked around the #SpiderMan set...

I'm looking forward to Doctor Strange. Mainly because it looks, well, strange. As Marvel gets closer to the release of Doctor Strange, they are going to start a big marketing push that will include more trailers, TV spots, and clips. Today we have four new spots with bits of additional footage to help build the excitement.
This movie looks like it's going to be a pretty awesome, mind-bending moviegoing experience. This is definitely going to be one of the most different films that Marvel has made so far, and I can't wait to see how exactly this story plays out. I'm sure we're going to be in for a wild ride with some crazy fun twists and turns.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: Jon Favreau's contribution to the modern superhero boom goes vastly understated.
With 2008's Iron Man, Favreau delivered a movie that would serve as the perfect foundation for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. When Doctor Strange comes out on November 4th, it'll be the fourteenth film set in the world that Favreau helped launch.
He may get a lot of flack for what many consider to be one of the Marvel saga's weak points, Iron Man 2, but we must remember that a big part of the reason for that film's issues were the number of cooks in the kitchen. In fact, one could argue that the meddling by Marvel executives- forcing him to lay too much groundwork for The Avengers- was why Favreau stepped away and made a little gem called Chef, about a cook finding his groove again.

Kicking off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Civil War left the Avengers fractured, with much of the team scattered to the four corners of the Earth. It's unlikely (although admittedly possible) that any of the films set between Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War (Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok or Black Panther), will reunite the full team. As such, Thanos' attack on the planet will come at a time when Earth's Mightiest Heroes are at their weakest. In terms of picking a winner and loser in the battle between Team Iron Man and Team Cap, the Russo's answer (via Quora) implies that there's still more warfare to come. "We always thought of this movie as the start of the war. It's not over yet." As far as the Russo's favored Avenger is concerned, it seems he has a difficult road ahead.

Review by Brandon Krzysztof
Films are being released in clusters lately each Tuesday and September 13th continues that trend with Captain America: Civil War, one of many sequels released that day. It’s safe to say this was the most anticipated new release of the week. It was released on Steelbook at Best Buy, which was an exclusive. It also had a 3D version with a beautiful slip cover and a standard version without a slip cover which I believe was very weak for the price; it had no digital HD to go with no slip cover for $19.99.
The Synopsis
After an incident that kills innocent civilians, political interference in the Avengers’ activities causes a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man.
The Review
I saw Captain America: Civil War twice in theaters; once in IMAX 3D on opening night and a second time which was a standard showing later that weekend.

Season 4 of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is upon us and, by all accounts, this new batch of episodes if already off to a flyer following last night’s scintillating premiere. The fun doesn’t stop there, though, with the studio already directing attention to episode 2, “Meet the New Boss.”
Those of you who have been keeping tabs of the appropriately fiery marketing campaign for season 4 will have no doubt clocked eyes on the first images already, but we now have a promo to sate our appetite ahead of September 27 – one which drums up the seemingly imminent clash between Quake and Robbie Reyes himself, Ghost Rider.
Indeed, Gabriel Luna’s Spirit of Vengeance has stolen headlines left, right and center for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s fourth and possibly final season, and considering that the actor views his demonic stunt driver as a “wild card,” it’s not too difficult to see why.

Right off the bat, season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. makes it clear that this is a darker, sexier version of the Marvel show, one seems to have taken a sizeable cue from Jessica Jones and Daredevil. And honestly, this is probably for the best. The comic book zaniness of Agents has worked to great effect many times in previous seasons, but that doesn’t mean things can’t also get a little more racy as the show breaks out of its shell with a later time slot.
Though when you think about it, this latest season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. starts off more reminiscent of season 1 than ever. Daisy is a vigilante on the run, leaning on abilities that are slowly draining her. Coulson is no longer the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but rather the same covert field agent he used to be. When Ghost Rider shows up on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. he'll likely give the series a shot of much-needed adrenaline. While the shows cinematic big brothers are all generally well-received- and the biggest thing in Hollywood- the show has always been considered sort of ho-hum. Producers for the series would love for Ghost Rider to give the show a good kick in los cojones, and it sounds like actor Gabriel Luna is up for the task.

Considering the fact that Doctor Strange is now less than two months away, it’s surprising how little we still know about the next Marvel Studios movie. While it’s true that the marketing campaign has yet to really kick off, the studio appears to have been very careful when it comes to revealing too much about the plot.
That’s obviously not a bad thing, and though we already know that the film will be an origin story for the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange hasn’t taken things in the direction fans expected it to from the very start. The vast majority of people expected to see the hero pitted against Dormammu and Baron Mordo, but there’s no sign of the former so far and the latter will actually be his ally in the fight against Kaecilius.

Yesterday Marvel released a new Doctor Strange featurette which included a few awesome new shots from the movie, and today they've provided us with an updated synopsis. Though this breakdown doesn't really reveal anything we didn't already know about the plot, it does give us a more detailed idea of what to expect from the first act - plus, it's nice to finally see the Himalayan community of Kamar-Taj get a mention. Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe. Ah, the superhero origin story. No matter how complex or varied the comic book movie genre becomes, it can never stray too far from that familiar story structure. Next month, Marvel will deliver another one in Doctor Strange. Its content might be different from the norm – the movie will introduce magic and mysticism to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but its format will be cut from the same cloth as Iron Man, Ant-Man and Thor before it.
Hopefully Doctor Strange will join the ranks of some of the best superhero origin stories rather than those that did not work. We’re thinking Green Lantern, Hulk and Fantastic Four (any of them, really). Despite those failures, the familiar framework of the everyman (or woman) going on a journey of discovery to become a hero always has the potential to be brilliant, regardless of how many times it is used.

With so many superhero movies having flooded the box office in the past decade or so – with many more to come through 2020 – it’s become increasingly more important for filmmakers to break the mold and take calculated risks, lest the genre become stale and possibly implode. Despite playing it safe in some respects (a narrated letter near the end of the film pretty much undoes all the conflict that preceded it), Captain America: Civil War makes some significant strides when it came to charting new territory for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Much of this can be attributed to co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who have become the gold standard when it comes to creating great Marvel films, at least in my view. Between Civil War and its forbearer, The Winter Soldier, the Russos have cracked the formula...

I missed Comic-Con this year, and since Marvel hasn't released all of the footage online that they showed during their presentation, only the people who were in Hall H that Saturday night got to see footage from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I know Doctor Strange is coming up next and Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War are all on the horizon, but right now I think Guardians 2 is my most anticipated movie of the studio's immediate upcoming slate. I loved the first film, and with the returning cast, returning writer/director James Gunn, and new additions like Kurt Russell, I'm dying to see what happens to those intergalactic misfits.
In a new interview with Collider, Russell talked about the feeling while he was on set (playing Peter Quill's father, a humanoid version of Ego the Living Planet), praised the complexity of the film's story,...

Much like how Christmas sticks its butt earlier and earlier into the calendar every year (just let Halloween have its moment, damn!), blockbuster season no longer ends when the leaves begin to turn. For example, this winter is jam-packed with big releases. From Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Passengers to Doctor Strange and Assassin’s Creed, there is no reprieve for the wallets of movie-going sci-f/fantasy lovers. Today’s focus is on Ubisoft’s attempt to create the first truly good video game film adaptation. Like all gamers, I’ve been burned before but I’ve spoken about my hopes for the Assassin’s Creed movie. Yet it’s hard to keep jaded cynicism from creeping in like a carapace of armor against disappointment. So when Assassin’s Creed dropped new photos of Michael Fassbender as both Callum Lynch and Lynch’s ancestor Aguilar, my first reaction...

The Oscar Race just got a lot more crowded.
Natalie Portman as "Jackie". Photo by William GrayWhile Natalie Portman may be enjoying the lion's share of buzz for playing the title character in Jackie (her best performance yet) if Fox Searchlight plays their Fyc hand correctly the film could be a major player across the Oscar board (Portman and Sarsgard are the only acting possibillities. Greta Gerwig, Max Casella, John Carroll Lynch, John Hurt, and Beth Grant support them well but in extremely limited doses) including especially Costume Design, Director, Screenplay, and Production Design. The Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Original Score are also marvellous but the film is a little out of the box challenging so not everyone is going to respond to it; in its own caged bird way it's as angry as Pablo Larraín's Chilean pictures.
As expected given the festival raves and the film's connections to Darren Aronofsky,...

Joe and Anthony Russo are hard at work prepping to start production on Avengers: Infinity War. We've already seen the first photo from the set of them working with Josh Brolin. Brolin is playing Thanos in the film. He is only one of a ton of characters who will play a part in this epic story.
The movie is going to be loaded with characters! We know we'll see the original Avengers team, the Guardians of the Galaxy team, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and more coming together to fight the Mad Titan. We don't really know all of the characters that will be involved, but everyone is being considered.
During an interview with the Toronto Sun, the Russos were asked about the possibility of including some of the Netflix characters — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. In response to that Anthony said:
“We do consider everyone.

For better or worse, Ubisoft Motion Pictures and New Regency have plumped Assassin’s Creed down into a release corridor traditionally reserved for Oscar fare. It’s by no means the only tentpole to have taken up residence in December, of course, with Rogue One primed to launch just a few days before the arrival of Justin Kurzel’s live-action video game movie.
But whereas one is carving out new territory within arguably one of, if not the biggest film franchises out there, the other is out to construct a new movie series of its own. Yes, if Doctor Strange is considered an exercise in risk-taking for Marvel Studios, Assassin’s Creed is also shouldering heightened expectations going into the fall season, and the pitiful response to fellow 2016 video game features such as Warcraft and Angry Birds: The Movie only lumps on extra pressure.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently shooting in Atlanta, the same place where Avengers: Infinity War will begin production a little later this year. It was actually last week that the Russo Brothers shared a behind the scenes photo of Josh Brolin suited up in motion capture suit to play Thanos as rehearsals kicked off, but Jon Watts has now fired back with a video of his own.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming director took to Instagram last night to share a look at Tom Holland wearing a mo-cap suit of his own as he busts a move to Daft Punk’s “Doin it Right.”
We then see a very crude rendition of the wall-crawler on a monitor, a commonly used piece of technology which assists in helping a movie’s VFX experts later create a finished version. Interestingly, Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned Leeds, can also be seen here. Is this a sign...

As Clint Eastwood has proven time and again, you can teach an old director new tricks. In fact, after the success of “American Sniper” on IMAX screens, Eastwood is a total convert.
That’s why he proposed to cinematographer Tom Stern that they up the visual IMAX ante for “Sully,” with its amazing “Miracle on the Hudson” forced landing of Us Airways Flight 1549.
The surprised Stern did some intel and recommended they use IMAX’s new customized version of the Arri Alexa 65, 6K camera, totally transparent, save for the software adjustments for IMAX’s color space and workflow. Otherwise, it’s the same camera that delivers super-sharp and dynamic imagery (26% more image than standard widescreen). But, on “Sully,” it provided a pleasantly unexpected result.

Yeah, Marvel Studios is doing some pretty great stuff on the big screen. Their most recent film, Captain America: Civil War was a megahit, both critically and financially, and a lot of folks are really looking forward to where they take this world in their next movie, Doctor Strange. But while their movies are absolutely dominating the box office, Marvel's content on Netflix may very well be an even bigger hit for the hardcore comic book fans. Thus far, we've had two seasons of Daredevil, and one season of Jessica Jones, series that follow two street-level heroes with a more mature tone than your average Marvel Studios film. Their next big release is less than a month away, and comes in the form of Luke Cage, a series that follows the continuing adventures of the Jessica Jones character as he tries to defend Harlem.

The Watcher is an enigmatic character in the Marvel Universe. As his name implies, he watches the events of the world without interfering. Occasionally, he’s offered assistance to some characters but mostly, he watches. But what would happen if The Watcher were murdered?
That’s the premise of Original Sin, a Marvel event from 2014. Overall, the story was pretty good. It won’t go down as a classic but for what they were trying to accomplish, they did as well as they were going to.
The problem I have is how Nick Fury, the original Nick Fury, was portrayed. The story establishes that Nick is growing old by the day due to his body running out of the Infinity Formula that had been keeping him young over the years. They discussed how Nick had a side job separate from Shield that had him traveling the universe killing various threats...

All’s quiet on the superhero film front. For now. 2016 has almost birthed her last addition to the Marvel franchise. Doctor Strange will enter the world on November 6 and then the baton will pass to 2017 for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. Then in 2018, Black Panther will hit theaters in February before everything culminates (temporarily) in Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel is basically the Duggars of filmmaking at this point. With five films remaining before the next big Avengers ‘event,’ the McU is now tasked with moving the plot towards what is hopefully a showdown with Thanos. Spider-Man is the wildcard, but all other movies in Marvel’s roster deal with space and magic, two key components to getting the rumble with Thanos going. Each film should also get progressively more serious, as the stakes are higher than ever. Despite the quips, Captain America: Civil War...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an absolute juggernaut, one of the most well-constructed and lucrative franchises around and one that only seems to keep getting bigger and bigger with each new entry. When it comes to world building, Marvel is one of the best, though there is one thing that they do seem to struggle with repeatedly: crafting compelling villains.
As impressive as most of the studio’s efforts have been, we’ve yet to see a truly great bad guy emerge from Marvel. That doesn’t mean we haven’t had a few close contenders though, as over the McU’s lifespan we’ve had several villains who’ve turned out to be formidable opponents for our favorite heroes.

Here’s our first look at actor Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, a.k.a. Ghost Rider, in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I’m actually kind of excited about seeing this version of Ghost Rider brought to life in the series. Executive producer Jed Whedon talked about their version of the character in an interview with EW:
“As always, we are going to put our own spin on the character. We are staying true to the comics in the places where we feel like it’s really important — we love the character’s family dynamic and the East L.A. kid in him.”
Whedon also talked about expanding on the supernatural aspect of the Marvel universe saying:
“It started out with a guy building a suit using science, and then we met aliens that are the origin of the myths behind some of our gods, and this year Doctor Strange comes out.

In the past, many viewers have expressed concern with the lack of big name superheroes appearing on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I completely understand where they’re coming from. While it may be cool to see guest appearances by characters such as Sif, Mockingbird, and even Nick Fury, it seems like we may never see the likes of an Iron Man or Captain America.
What got the attention of many a comic book fan – including my own – was when it was officially confirmed that Ghost Rider would be appearing during the show’s fourth season. Sure, he’s not part of the cinematic Avengers lineup, but he is an icon that brings a darker element to the series.
Undoubtedly raising some eyebrows, the Robbie Reyes version of the character (played by Gabriel Luna) is set to ride his flaming hot rod into your living room, as opposed to a motorcycle.

A few thoughts on where Avengers: Infinity War can go - and how X-Men can help...
You have to feel both simultaneous envy and sympathy when it comes to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Current darlings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after their feted screenwriting duties on the Captain America trilogy, they’ve now been given the herculean task of nailing a story and screenplay for the forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War, a two-part culmination of three phases worth of McU build-up.
On the one hand: what a treat to be given license to play around in that sandbox; to have access to all those incredible characters; to conceive the greatest battle the Avengers will face thus far as Thanos finally makes his play.
On the other hand: how the hell are they going to pull this off?
Because it’s not just about tying up all those...

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for Captain America: Civil War
This year was a big one for Marel fans. Yes, we had the release of Captain America: Civil War, a film that is perhaps the most ambitious project they've had to date, and yes, this year we'll be getting our first dose of Doctor Strange, a film that is poised to bring another unique flavor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it was also a big deal because of one superhero who appeared in the former film: Black Panther.
Okay, I'm hearing some of you roll your eyes (you should probably get that checked out), but let's be real here: Black Panther was the first non-white leading superhero to show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We had Blade in the late 1990s (I hear you yelling at your screens), but as far as the current generation, all non-white superheroes...

Even though some recent releases have been able to perform relatively well at the box office, video game movies, for the most part, tend to be very hit-or-miss with very few ever generating any sort of critical acclaim. But this winter, 20th Century Fox's Assassin's Creed is certainly hoping to buck the trend. The Justin Kurzel-directed picture boasts a very impressive cast led by 2x Academy Award-nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse), who's joined by Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons (Justice League), 3x Golden Globe-nominee Brendan Gleeson (Edge Of Tomorrow), and Primetime Emmy-nominee Michael K. Williams (The Night Of). Thanks to Yahoo! Movies' fall movie preview, which gave us a mystical new still from Marvel's Doctor Strange earlier this morning, we have a brand new photo of Fassbender suited up as Aguilar scanning the horizon for trouble.
