- Quotes
Fred: [Shaggy has run into an umbrella, and is now hopping away from the ghost in the water] Shaggy, come back!
[he, Velma and Daphne run after him]
Velma: Shaggy, come out of that umbrella.
Shaggy: [pops his head out of the umbrella] No! Uh-uh! Did you see what I saw?
Fred: Yeah, we saw it. And we're going back to find out what it is.
Shaggy: Swell! I'll wait here. And when you find out, send me a telegram.
Daphne: [looking back] We won't have to. Look, it's gone.
[Scooby sighs in relief]
Daphne: There's something mighty spooky going on around here.
Fred: Yeah. And I wonder what it is.
- Alternate versionsOriginal aired versions had the instrumental theme by Ted Nichols on both the opening and closing credits, but has since been substituted on newer airings and home media by David Mook's familiar lyrical song.

Admittedly, there are goofs in some of the animation in the first underwater sequences especially, but much of the animation is lively, atmospheric and nicely drawn. The music adds to the impact the atmosphere creates, the standout being the incredibly eerie Ghost of Captain Cutler theme, and it is very difficult to resist the classic theme song that is one of the most iconic in animation.
Like in "What a Night for a Knight", one of "A Clue for Scooby Doo's" biggest strengths is the atmosphere. Throughout there is a real darkness and creepiness, as a kid it was the episode that freaked me out the most and it's still one of the creepiest. It's not all dark and creepy though, even so early on in the show there is an ideal balance of mystery and comedy, and while the comedy is as ever sort of goofy and silly it's in an endearing sort of way and never annoying or juvenile. There is some hilarious writing here, much of it coming from Shaggy.
The mystery too acquits itself just fine, with some nice clues that carry the story nicely without being convoluted or simplistic and a case that's easy to follow and comprehend. It's formulaic, but not in a way that's overly predictable, which is true of Scooby Doo at its best or when it's still solid. Again the dark and creepy atmosphere helps enormously, as well as the humour, how well established the lead characters are and Shaggy and Scooby's charming and amusing friendship. Plus the Ghost of Captain Cutler sure is memorable, if his music doesn't scare you already his glowing appearance and booming roar certainly will.
"A Clue for Scooby Doo's" ending is one of the most surprising in the series, a twist that one will not see coming and the perpetrator and the motivation is not at all obvious from the get go. There is a sneaky suspicion, but it's not like "Never Ape an Ape Man" and "Mine Your Own Business" where it's obvious early on. The sound effects also add to the music, and the voice acting, especially from Don Messick and Casey Kasem, is very good.
Overall, one of the most memorable episodes as a child and still holds up with the same impact now. 10/10 Bethany Cox
