delicious start...

Episode for making the basics of the whole story; a unique idea with a lot of challenges around it, just thinking of having death note is so terrify.

A Good Start To A Great Series
DxctorReviews25 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The episode that should start this whole series and help us understand the characters and plot. And it really succeeds on that. I like the eerie vibe throughout the episode which carries through in later episodes. It wastes no time and we immediately understand Light's motives, the position he is put in and how the book works. I think this episode is really good but I can't lie when I say it has some minor flaws.

It starts off with a little cut of the Shinigami land until it transitions to Light Yagami, a bright student but is bored of his life. While in class he sees a book literally fly out of the clouds and onto the ground. As the bell rings he goes outside to look at it. This scene practically goes like this. "Haha, this is so fake. Anyways, I'm going to use it now" When he gets home he turns on TV he has in his room and sees a hostage situation going on. Like any normal person Light writes the name of the person who is holding people hostage and within 40 seconds he dies.

A day later as Light is still in shock he sees a gang trying to rape some innocent woman for no reason whatsoever. I like this scene, but hear me out. Light opens the notebook and hears the name of the leader and writes it down as "Accidental Death" As the woman runs away the man chases her on his motorcycle and then gets hit by a goddamn truck. Jeez, what a satisfying ending. Light still has remorse from what he has done in the past two days but he shortly stops feeling bad knowing he killed 2 horrible criminals.

We then learn about one of the most important characters in the whole series. Ryuk, he literally spawns into Lights room and Light who is not threatened at all has a talk with him, then he shows Ryuk the giant page of names with some of the biggest criminals in the world. He then makes a big speech quickly showing YOU (the viewer who has nothing to do but lie around and watch Anime) his motives. I think this was a really cool execution of showing what Light really wants to do with the notebook. The whole dialogue between him and Ryuk is pretty cool too.

I think this is a great pilot episode for the show but it doesn't have much going on, as we are only introduced to 2 characters. There is no real struggle Light has to face here and I except that from Pilots. He has nothing to really face here but it is still an episode that makes you hooked to the entire series to see what will happen to Light with Ryuk. Overall, a very cool episode that I'll give an 8.5/10.

Still great after 10 years?
The1FilmCritic26 November 2023
I think the time has come to finally see this iconic series again. It's been now exactly 10 years that I have seen this anime for the first time and I have to be honest, I was nine at that time, so I absolutely have no clue what this all was about.

But wow, this episode brings back memories of the 2000s for me and it's beautiful. I love the music, the animations, the style and THE VIBE... it is absolutely unique. It's the perfect start even if it seems cheesy at first and don't panic, I'll explain very briefly what I mean by cheesy. The main character is the perfect student and just by chance he looks out the window and sees something falling. Hours later, he goes out and picks up a notebook... I think you understand what I'm getting at, but I have absolutely no problem with it.

This is the start of something great and I already love it.

Hooked
thahar6 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I decided to watch the first episode of this anime recently because of the summary: an intelligent student finds a unique notebook, called the Death Note, where if he writes someones name down, they die in a matter of seconds. It intrigued me; it sounds similar to the TV show Dexter: a show which I think is fantastic. So I watched it, and I was immediately hooked and I definitely knew I was going to watch the entire series. It's definitely one of my favourite TV shows now. In my opinion, it's better than Cowboy Bebop.

What I really admire about this show is the art style. The show is based on the manga, which I never read, so that is where the art style comes from. I also like the theme song, despite being in Japanese. I watch it dubbed in English and find the voice acting top-notch, fitting perfectly with the characters, and writing that is so comprehensive.

The first episode shows the beginning of it all; a shinigami god is bored one day and drops the Death Note onto Earth. A student, named Light Yagami, finds it on the ground, takes it home and studies it. I love how the first episode explains all the basics of the Death Note. I also like the character development of Light in this episode. So Light reads what it says inside the Death Note that if he writes someone's name down, they die in a matter of seconds. Light finds it ridiculous but tests it out by writing down the name of a criminal in it. It works; the criminal dies of a heart attack. Light is in shock, but he uses it again and another criminal dies in a different way. Light continues to kill criminals, knowing he has the power to kill anyone in any way. When he gets home one day, he suddenly sees the shinigami (that nobody else can see) who explains almost everything we need to know in detail about the Death Note. By the end of the episode, the government find the sudden deaths of dozens of criminals suspicious, and this is where the show really gets started and to know what it's really all about.

In this show, our protagonist is obviously an anti-hero, who kills criminals, and so is a serial-killer. Not only this, but he's also intelligent, which helps to make the show much more interesting and clever. This is one of the serial dramas where it is mandatory to watch every episode of. This first episode truly is the start of something special.

Ominous and Well Written: An Amazing Premiere
Kilmern-933194 March 2023
I decided to start watching Death Note because the premise seemed so unique. A genius high school student gets a notebook from a God of Death that can kill anyone he wants? Count me in! After watching, I was not let down, in fact, I believe that this episode exceeded all my expectations.

The series hooks you in within the first 5 minutes. The opening music is phenomenal, the animation style is visually pleasing and well done, and the writing is fantastic. It's very easy to follow, but not to the point it feels overly simple.

Upon rewatch, it's fascinating to see Light, freaking out over the death of a guy who admittedly deserved it, eventually turn into the very thing he hated. Just in the span of one episode, Light has already done away with many criminals. Ryuk and the rules of the notebook are introduced and sets up what's to come perfectly. A perfect premiere all around.

10/10.

Fantastic start
lhbaker-2878324 March 2022
Already at the start I have gotten chills and thrills. But I've got a feeling that this won't be all of it. Knock on wood. The storyline (storyline not plot) is somewhat simple, but captivating all the same. And the style of this show, animation and all, seem like the type for me. I think I've only ever seen a better start to a show once, which was The Promised Neverland. But that's only because on top of creating a story it had horror/thriller/suspense too. While all other shows kind of just start off building a story. I'm truly excited for the future of Death Note!

Incredible
klausvarbr5 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It's incredible how sometimes I watch anime and none of them come close to the genius of this anime. Even more incredible is that even though I know the endings, the beginning and the middle, I am always surprised by Light's arrogance and arrogance. Yes, it would be great if he had a notebook that would make him end all evil, but the way Light uses it just consumes him. From the beginning, he shows himself to be a self-centered person, who thinks he is the best person in the world. Him wanting to be the god of the new world, which he created, where he creates in his mind who deserves to live or die is just a sample of his sick mind. I understand who defends him, because who wouldn't want to get rid of all the criminals in the world, right? But then, as Ryuk said, Light getting rid of all the evil in the world, the only bad person left will be himself. Episode one watched on March 4, 2024.

Masterpiece!!
abhinavm-2377328 March 2024
I wanted a Suspenseful and a direct to point with less episode anime. Death note was the brillint choice for this. It is soo good that I want season 2 for this. It has twists that keep us engaged, each episode deals with problems differently and not like what we deal in real life, the graphics is cool, and music gives me goosebumps. This is my most favourite anime. Unlike other anime's, this anime has a very different story and hence is very unique. At beginning I thought it no more than an ordinary anime but once I saw the Imdb rating I gave it a try, now I keep on watching this again and again.

Would suggest anyone (above age rating) to watch this anime.
