Sam Learns the Truth About John's Final Words
katierose29521 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is important for several reasons. 1) It establishes that there is a demon war coming and that the psychic kids will play a part in it. 2)It introduces the character of Ava, who will come up again. 3) It brings Gordon back on the canvas. 4)Sam finally admits that he is Hunting because he thinks its making a real difference in the world. 5)It reveals what John told Dean in "In My Time of Dying": Dean must either save Sam or kill him. This is an important episode and you really can't skip it.

"Hunted" revolved around Sam finally learning about John's dying words back in "In My Time of Dying." Apparently having some idea of Sam's destiny, John told Dean that one day he'd have to either save Dean or kill his brother. Dean is confused by what his father meant by that, and why Sam's immune to the "Croatoan" demon virus and how his visions are connected to the Yellow Eyed Demon. Dean thinks that they should lay low. Sam disagrees. Angry and scared he takes off for the Roadhouse leaving Dean behind. While he's there, he gets Ash to find out more about the psychic kids. It turns out one has been killed recently and Sam heads off to investigate.

Sam soon meets up with a girl named Ava, who says that she has visions of people's death, just like Sam. She's seen Sam being blown-up. She and Sam begin investigating the other psychic guy's death. Dean arrives in town, just in time to stop Gordon from killing Sam. Gordon kidnaps Dean and explains that he's on a new mission. He's heard of a coming war between humans and demons. The psychic kids are suppose to be helping the demon side. Gordon tries to trick Sam into triggering an explosive device, but thanks to Ava's warning, Sam survives. He and Dean escape Gordon and call the police so Gordon is arrested. Dean says that they should lay low, especially when they learn that someone at the Roadhouse tipped off Gordon. But, Sam insists that he's committed to Hunting now and that what the brothers do makes a difference in the world. Meanwhile, Ava vanishes and her fiancé is killed. The boys find traces of sulfur at her apartment and think she might have been taken by demons.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like the scene with Sam & Dean discussing John. Dean is trying to explain things to Sam, but all Sam can hear is that he might go evil. I think Sam knows that Dean will try to shield him and that the only way he'll ever get any real answers is to go out looking for them. Otherwise he could one day just wake up "darkside" and hurt his brother. It's an interesting. And I like Ava. She's such a cute, funny little thing in this episode. She and Sam are actually a good team, as they investigate the case. Her line, "Can't you just leave town before you blow up?" just makes me laugh. And I always like Gordon. He's such a good villain because he BELIEVES what he's doing. When Dean attacks him in a blind rage, punching Gordon and the two of them fight on the rooftop it's really cool. The phone call where Dean tips Sam off with the code word "Funky Town" is perfect. And I like the trip wires going off as Sam breaks into the abandoned house. Dean's panic as he thinks that Sam has been killed is incredible. When Sam comes into untie him, Dean just grabs at his brother, checking him for injuries and immediately heading into kill Gordon. But, Dean leaves the house when Sam asks him to, because he trust his brother's judgment. It's sweet.

One interesting feature of this episode is the question that Gordon poses to Dean. Gordon is convinced that Sam is evil. An unclean Anti-Christ type figure. He's convinced that he's right in his quest to kill Sam. Gordon can sort of understand Dean's hesitance to get on-board with the "lets-kill-Sammy" plan, seeing as Sam's his brother. But he also thinks that, as a professional Hunter, Dean should be able to understand the bigger issues here. He sees Dean as blinded by emotion. So Gordon asks what Dean thinks John would have done. If Sammy went evil, if John could stop him, would he shoot his own son? It's an interesting question. John seems to have told Dean to do just that in "In My Time of Dying." But, realistically, John HAD to know that Dean would NEVER shoot Sam. Not for any reason. No matter what. Before John told Dean that he might have to kill Sam one day, he started crying and telling Dean that Dean was the one who'd kept the family together. ("You took care of me, you took care of Sammy...") And that was also just hours after the events of "Devil's Trap," where John heard Dean begging Sam to not shoot John, stopping Sam from killing the YED once and for all. So in "In My Time of Dying," could John have really BELIEVED that Dean would kill Sam if it came down to the line? Did he really WANT Dean to? Could John have done it himself? I just don't know.

On the down side, we never do get any resolution on how Gordon got the information on Sam from the Roadhouse.

My favorite part of the episode: Ava at the psychiatrist's office, acting as a distraction for Sam. "I just remembered that when I was a kid, I ate like 6 things of Pop-Rocks and then drank a whole can of soda! You don't think that counts as a suicide attempt, do you?"

Save or Kill: The Dilemma of Dean
claudio_carvalho7 July 2008
Dean finally tells Sam the last words of John Winchester before dying, and opens his heart about his dilemma and feelings. Sam leaves Dean during the night and travels alone seeking answers with Ellen and Ash in the Harvelle's Bar. When he finds that another psychic was stabbed in a parking lot in Illinois, he decides to investigate his death. Meanwhile, in Peoria, the young woman Ava Wilson has a premonition with the death of Sam and meets him in the motel of her dream where Sam is lodged. Meanwhile Ellen tells Dean where his brother is, while Sam is hunted by Gordon.

In this excellent episode, it is disclosed what John told to Dean about Sam and his dilemma and feelings; further, it seems that a demon war is coming and Sam and other psychics will fight on the demon side. Ava Wilson is introduced and I hope to have the chance to see this character again. The despicable Gordon returns but is duly framed by Sam. My vote is nine.

You're a fine upstanding citizen, Sam.

Warning: Spoilers
Did I say I hated Gordon Walker? I do. The guy is so stupid, How could he ever think he could kill Sam in front of Dean and expect him to understand it is for the greater good and not knowing that Dean would hunt him forever.

Dean finally comes clean about John's big secret. Apparently, John told Dean that he would have to save Sam and if he couldn't he would have to kill him. (Seriously John! How could you ask that of Dean? of all people, How could you think that Dean would kill Sammy no matter what? You knew better man!). Sam; angry, hurt and scared, wants to know the truth about the daemon's plans but Dean begs him to lay low for some time till they figure things out. Knowing that Dean will shield him from the truth, He takes off at night and heads to the Roadhouse to seek Ash's help finding other psychic kids. Ash finds four people fitting the profile (all their mother's died in a fire in their nursery on the six month's birthday). Those were Sam, Andrew Gallagher (See "Simon said"), Max Miller (see "Nightmare") and Scott Carey who was stabbed a month earlier in a parking lot. Sam investigates Scott's death and he meets up with Ava Wilson who shares the same type of visions like Sam. Ava had a vision of Sam getting killed and comes to warn him. Meanwhile, Worried Dean is looking for his brother everywhere when he receives a call from Ellen telling him Sam's whereabouts. As Dean arrives to the place, He is spots Gordon trying to kill Sam. After a brief fight, Gordon knocks Dean out taking him hostage to use him as bait to kill Sam, believing Sam is the Anti-Christ. But, Thanks to Ava's help, Sam is warned about Gordon's plan and he rescues Dean but not before tipping the police of Gordon's car arsenal. On the ride home, Sam tries to call Ava but with no answer, he gets worried so they head to her apartment to check on her, only to find her missing and her boyfriend is killed with traces of sulphur all over the place.

There are some great parts in this episode:

1- Sam dying in Ava's vision at the beginning had me jumping "OH my God". That was a cruel way for Sammy to die.

2- I liked it when Dean's voice cracks and we see fear in his eyes when he begs Sam to lay low for some time.

3- Ellen was such a lovable character. She was a motherly figure to the boys. She knew how to deal with Sam and tell him that it was not his fault Jo ran away from home, as it is not his fault that John was responsible for her husband's death. She also had to call Dean and tell him where Sam was. (She is a mother after all and understands Dean's worry even though she promised Sam)

4- I loved Sam's reaction when Ava told him about her vision of him dying. (A quick flash of fear then he had to hold it together).

5- When Ava tries to argue Sam against walking right through Gordon's trap because this is how he dies, Sam just says "It doesn't matter, He's my brother". That's very very cute.

6- Sam always gets angry when other people call him Sammy, :).

7- Dean's extreme rage and pain when he thought Sam was dead was heartbreaking, and when Sam untied him up, the first thing that came to his mind was to check Sammy's wounds before going after Gordon, but he had to trust Sam.

This is a heavy must see episode, we finally uncover John's secret, we also learn that there is a war coming and The Yellow Eyed Daemon plans for the psychic kids to be his worriers.

Applaud to Jensen for his performance. Jared, you are definitely getting better and better. I liked Ava, she was innocent and cute. And finally, the soundtrack was the best, Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" was certainly a favourite.

Hunted

As usual the writers of Superantural presented an edge of the seat episode. Which will leave you wanting more and anticipating the next episode. It begins with Dean finally revealing the "secret" of what his father said about Sam before dying. We are to experience Dean's hesitation and guilt of keeping this hidden from Sam. We are then are able to feel for Sam and understand his reaction after the secret is revealed.

As the plot of the episode moves along we are introduced to a new character Ava is somehow connected with Sam. We are able to understand her confusion and shock after realizing she is not alone. We are also reconnected with a character from the past. His arrival brings a new twist to this fast moving episode.

In the end new revelations are discovered. Which will lead the boys once again searching for answers in this world of confusion.

Wicked!!

Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode. It was a complete nail biter, and edge of your seat kinda deal. From the re appearance of Gordon, who by the way in my eyes is a fantastic villain, to the apparent disappearance of Ava...it was fantastic! Jensen Ackles performances were again spot on. From his first fight with Gordon, to the soul splitting 'death of SAM', he was brilliant. Just the right amount of action and mystery to make it a fantastic episode! Kudos to the writers, and of course to the brilliance of Kripke. Ava was a brilliant character, just the right amount of angsty 'why me' behaviour, coupled with a bubbly personality to make a refreshing addition to the episode. All in all a FANTASTIC piece of work, and one of my favourite episodes... and while I'm here can i just add how much i loved that blood splatter on the camera when SAM blew up :D Xsarahx

Kudos Sterling K. Brown !
gsbuie16 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So I'm on about my millionth rewatch of Supernatural as it's my favorite show ever and I am so ashamed. I always enjoyed the hunter Gordon Walker, Sterling K. Brown, but for some reason tonight it got me just how good he was. Gordon was the first person to confront Dean with the fact of just how much he enjoys killing. And Dean is quite surprised and in denial. Their scenes together were intense. Gordon was fierce and only saw Sam as a monster. Since Dean is emotionally involved, he doesn't want to acknowledge Gordon is correct about how similar they are. I'm not saying Dean should ever kill Sammy, I just think Gordon was excellent with Dean. The way that episode ended was awesome too. As was Gordon's part in "Bad Day at Black Rock"!

I loved Gordon and the tension and thrill he brought. I generally love when there are other prominent characters in the series. Ava was cool too.

A good episode
mm-393 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I love this one. Sam has a vision and learns about his future. Sam for sees his own death. Gordon tries to kill Sam for he knows the secret of Sam. Sam has the help of a fellow person with the same skills. A turn about where, Dean gets captured by Gordon, and Sam come to the rescues. Sam shows, a good plot twist, that he is the smarter brother by getting Gordon arrested by the cops, and Gordon will probably do 100 years. The humor is added when Dean is impressed and says don't drop the soap. What a great story, which keeps the viewer wanting more. What does all the plot development have to do with Sams future. Sam develops in this story form the younger brother to a much stronger character. I believe this episode will lead the way for what season 3 will be about. 8 out of 10

After seeing this episode again (been years), all I do is scream at the tv and tell (Randall Pearson) to stop crying. Then I started crying, how characters ruin actors for life.

Aged badly, poorly developed themes and terrible ending
CubsandCulture12 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The psychic kids episodes are all mishandled in part because Kripke ended disliking how the concept played out visually. Hunted is probably the biggest mistake of the bunch even discounting the further problems time has exposed. Of note , Ava being able to see the future and Gordon's desire to kill Sam is the first time the duality of free will and fatalism that is such a thematic keystone for seasons 4-5 is brought up. It doesn't really work because the critical moment is hidden from the viewer due to the plot requiring tension at that point. Gordon as a foil isn't given his due and the whole thing feels rushed.

That would result in a lackluster episode but time has exposed the biggest problem with how the writers went about this. Having Sam call the cops on Gordon is wrong. It is wrong on a character standpoint-it is extremely hypocritical in the context of the characterization of all 3 characters. It is wrong on a plotting stand point. It is unbelievable that Gordon, a black man, would have survived his encounter with cops. But worse of all the story beat introduces a subtext that has no place in this episode. It is impossible to ignore that as white men, even as social misfits, the Winchesters still could bring the power of the state down upon a black guy. The creators are blissfully unaware of the optics of the moment and post-BLM the ending is at best tone deaf.
