A Very exciting conclusion and new cliffhanger
Mike-on-TV9 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The most recent addition to the Lost cliffhanger saga continues tonight with what I am calling the most outlandish request for an audience next week. The thing is, it works. Jack has the underbelly of the others in a life or death situation with Henry/Ben that this reviewer could have expected to be a hoax. The problem is that a life is on the line here and it does not seem to be a newcomer to the cast of the science fiction series.

Every relationship that Kate gathers results in a new dilemma and the most recent is not that of her flashback police officer/faux-husband from the past. Instead it is the connection with Sawyer. Fortunately Jack has the ability to see the bigger picture and know the others for who they really are: manipulative killers who only seek gratification from the persecution of others. But not their others.

Sawyer, ready to die, shows, again that he only cares for himself in a bastardly stay of surrender. He should have run with Kate until they came to the peeks of the new island, and swam home.

Home is not what it used to be as we find the convincingly evil black-smoked monster, that roams the initial scary island, has killed Mr. Eko. His burial ceremony may have uncovered a new clue for John and Sayid, but to what avail? Another survivor's life? Tonight ended more abruptly than ever. I feel that once the negotiations with Jack threatening Henry/Ben's life end, there will be a belligerent preparation from the others and any one who apposes them. We'll have to stay tuned.

I Do
MrFilmAndTelevisionShow4 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There are some TV shows, which never upset the status quo, they are great shows but nothing, or almost nothing ever changes, the Simpsons for example.

There are some TV shows with a narrative but they pad it out will filler episodes of side-adventures and while great can sometimes feel like they've wasted some of your time.

Then there are some TV shows, TV show likes Lost, where the narrative is never thrown asside, they keep things interesting by throwing in backstory and the interconnectedness of all the passengers lives. This episode was no different, Kate's confusing backstory continues and Jack does what is called a pro-gamer move.

I Do
TheLittleSongbird1 April 2018
When 'Lost' was in its prime, it was must-watch television. Remember first watching it, found it remarkably easy to get into, was hooked from the start and was on Season 3 by the end of one week. The general consensus is that the final season is a disappointment and cannot disagree.

Of the first block of Season 3 (where for me, contrary to what is often said as this part of the season is not popular with most 'Lost' fans, the only disappointment was "Further Instructions"), its conclusion "I Do" is the joint best along with "The Cost of Living". Hard to say which episode there is a preference to, "The Cost of Living" was a powerful farewell to Mr Eko, whereas "I Do" doesn't have Nikki and Paulo jarring with the rest of the episode.

"I Do" is at its weakest with the Kate and Sawyer love stuff, it was sort of sweet but also on the mushy side, doesn't add as much as one would think and is not as interesting as the rest of the episode.

Everything else is terrifically done, especially the tension between Jack and Ben and the gutsy brutality of Danny Pickett that makes one scared for Sawyer. Kate's flashback is one of her better ones in terms of writing and how it adds to Kate's character, Nathan Fillion's presence helps quite a bit too.

The Others continue to chill, Locke's fairly short contribution to the episode is nonetheless a powerful one and the cliffhanger is one of the show's most shocking so far. Jack telling Kate to run is unforgettable, one of his best ever lines.

Acting as always is without complaint, Josh Holloway, Michael Bowen, Michael Emerson and Evangelline Lilly are all excellent as is Matthew Fox in one of his best performances as Jack.

Can't fault the stylishness and atmosphere of the visuals, nor the effective use of music, taut writing and the tightly controlled direction.

Altogether, terrific. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Fox is an such a great Character as doc.Shephard. Sawyer and Kate .. what a chemistry between those actors. I cried in this episode. And benjamin linus ..wow. He is creepy. Hands down this is the best episode on whole episode.

Finally!!
LOSTfan9329 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this episode, I thought Kate and Sawyer would be together since they kissed in Season One. It was so obvious that Kate was lying when she said "I only said I love you to make him stop" in Every Man for Himself. She was practically bawling when Pickett beat him up in that episode. I borrowed Season three from my brother the first time I saw it. When it started I thought "okay, Kate episode, this should be good." I saw it seven times. Maybe more. I love that episode so much. It's so good. Sawyer is my favourite. I think this is my favourite episode from Season Three. Or at least one of them. When Danny goes out to kill Sawyer (Good thing he doesn't I would've been the one bawling) I was biting my nails like crazy. It's a really really really good episode.

Amazing
lanithee_lillyfan9 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I am an obsessive LOST fan, and I usually love every episode. But I found this episode to be the best yet. The acting was phenomenal, especially by Evangeline Lilly. It's just amazing how far she has come. She seriously deserves an award for her performance in 'I Do'. And the looks on her face that she gave Sawyer when she entered his cage. I applaud her for that.

----

SPOILER ALERT!

Flashbacks:

'I Do' was a Kate centric episode based on her relationship with Kevin, a police officer. They loved each other, but Kevin believed Kate's real name was Monica, and didn't know about her shady past. They do get married, and Kate doesn't want to run anymore. She tries to settle down with Kevin, but after a pregnancy scare, she decides that her lie has gone too far. She tells Kevin the truth, and drugs him before running away.

Island:

Ben needs a life-saving operation from Jack, or he will die. Jack is stubborn, and refuses to do it. Juliet sends Kate to Jack to try to convince him to do the operation, or else Sawyer will be killed by Pickett/Danny. When Jack says that he won't do it, Kate fears for Sawyer's life, and her and Sawyer end up sleeping together. Pickett comes back for Sawyer and just when he's about to execute him, Jack is operation on Ben. He makes a small incision that if not fixed in the next hour, Ben will die. Jack's voice on Pickett's walkie-talkie interrupts the execution, and he demands to talk to Kate. He demands the she and Sawyer run. They have about an hour head-start before 'The Others' go after them. Kate refuses to leave, and Jack yells to her through the walkie-talkie "KATE DAMNIT, RUN!!"

----

If you've never watched LOST, you don't know what you're missing. This episode had everything. And the cliff-hanger ending. I almost died. The only thing that disappoints me is that we have to wait until February until a new episode comes out. And the time change. LOST now starts at 10, and goes until 11.

The Sequel of This Great Episode Only on February of Next Year
claudio_carvalho13 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Juliet and Ben use Kate to press Jack to remove the tumor of Ben's spine. Kate tries to protect Sawyer and asks Jack to perform the surgery in Ben. Later, Kate and Sawyer make love, while Kate recalls her marriage with her beloved Kevin. Locke, Sayid, Paulo and Nikki bury Mr. Eko.

This edgy episode is excellent, with tense situations among Jack, Kate and Sawyer. The message that Locke found on Mr. Eko's staff may be a hint for new mysteries in the island. Unfortunately, I have just seen in IMDb that the sequel of this great episode will be aired only on 7 February 2007 (Season 3, Episode 7). Season 3 has just begun and will be interrupted for almost three months, showing a shameful absolute lack of respect of the producers of this cult series with the fans. My vote is ten for the episode and zero for the producers of "Lost".

Title (Brazil): Not Available

Note: On 7 April 2013, I saw this episode again on DVD.

Great Finale!
Joofus8 November 2006
First of all, the finale for the mid-season of 'Lost' was incredible. It was intense, romantic, and it had regret. Amazing. I am still in awe from watching it, so please forgive me if I rant. The summary tells it all, and I don't want to spoil anything, but it really was nice to see Jack back in intense mode. He's been to mopey for my tastes lately. However, the one problem with the show is that now I have to wait 13 weeks to watch the next one. Bleck. I don't think that, after seeing this episode, anyone could wait such a while. It doesn't seem like much now, but, after seeing 'I Do,' you really do want to watch more. But what are you waiting for? Log on to ABC.com! Watch that episode! Watch it again if you've seen it before. As for me, I'll see you in Febuary! -Emily

Hard to Watch
sferg625 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Flashback focused on Kate's marriage. She called Mars and asked him to stop chasing her. He agreed if she would stay put, but didn't think she could. He was right, and my opinion is that she called him to tip him off and have an excuse to run. She ran even though she had no indication that he wasn't going to keep his promise.

Watching Pickett beat Sawyer was hard to watch. It was absolutely brutal. I understand that he was upset by Colleen's death, but Sawyer was locked in his cage and had nothing to do with that.

After Jack started the surgery and Pickett dragged Sawyer out of his cage, forced him to his knees in the mud and held the gun to his head, I almost believed that Sawyer was a goner. Sawyer is one of my favorite characters, and I would have hated that he was dead, but OMG, if the writers had followed through with it, it would have been a gutsy move, and this show really needs to get its guts back.

Brilliant Episode
Every thing Is perfect in this episode. The memories of Kate in this episode we see can be the reason of the Kate can come out of the cage easily and ben already knew her past.because her past doesn't let her run.at the end of episode jack yelling her behind the walkie talkie to run.Sawyer Told her that they can't run.they are in another island.but when kate answer to jack that i can't run we can't figure out that is because of sawyer words or because of her past memories or because of her love to jack or because of she is untrusted to Sawyer words.....I said it's Brilliant episode...wow!

Season 3, part 1: Treading water presented as the forward crawl (spoilers)
bob the moo22 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Having walked into a trap, Jack, Sawyer and Kate are held by the others – with Jack in a cell deep within a building and Kate and Sawyer in cages above ground while Michael and Walt are long gone. The explosion within the hatch has left nothing but a crater with only Charlie having walked clear. Locke wakes in the jungle with no recollection of what specifically happened, while Desmond seems to have developed a strange skill and Eko is nowhere to be seen.

They release it in two parts so I shall review it in two parts! Of course I know why they broke the season up because six months is a long time for a series that relies purely on motion and "of the moment" action rather than a lasting depth that make hold the audience until the next season starts (for example The Wire). This has always been the case with Lost as it is all about the mystery, filling each episode with big questions and answers to minor mysteries but never really going anywhere. I admit that it works but season 2 was a bit of hard work for me because I did get the feeling that the only thing that the writers are trying to do is keep the series going for as long as it makes money. I recall reading that they said they had enough material for eight seasons but by the end of season 2 I honestly doubted if they even had enough for three or four.

The first two episodes of season 3 didn't help dissuade me at all because I found them deadly dull – stagnating within the bigger mystery and adding character red-herrings to fill out the time. Fans will claim that the character back stories have as much to do with the series as the mystery of the island and, in theory, they are correct. However for me my ability to care about the people on the island has always been limited by how basic and semi-developed they are as characters so this leaves me with the wider mystery and the gradual progress within that as the only hook to keep me involved in the show. Part one of season 3 was meant to be the bridge that keeps the audience hooked until part two but to achieve this they have done the usual thing of plodding and stagnating with minor issues being "solved" while every now and again dropping a cliff-hanger or a bigger mystery to keep the audience happy that there is a "big answer" somewhere and that it is only a matter of time. Personally I don't see what it achieved as we know nothing more than we did and have just been presented with another distraction and filler, posing as excitement – hell, the actual cliffhanger from season 2 is not even mentioned! A good example of how little I am starting to care is the death of Eko. In another series I have seen a character played by Agbaje die and it was gutting and important. That was Oz. Here it just seemed like another way to keep things interesting and the writers could not even bother to hide their contempt for the audience because in the same episode two new people from the survivors are promoted from "extras" to "the in crowd" by joining the search party for him. I'm sure they didn't mean it but it was obvious and clumsy and unhelpfully sent a message to me. The performances continue to be the level of soap – very in the moment and serviceable but with nobody willing or able to do a great deal with who they are playing – mostly they are responding, which they mostly do well.

Overall then more of the same from the series that more than ever seems to be just trying to hang on to as many viewers as possible for as long as possible and apparently has any other aim as a distant second. I will of course stick with it because, like many others I want to see how it ends, but I really hope that season 3 part 2 can do something of more interest than this. It'll give die-hard fans what they crave but this mini-season will surely be a step towards the exit door for more viewers than just myself.

Good job but inferior to the expectations
PorkChopExpress7011 November 2006
Episode 6 is the last episode of the first block of Season 3. A second block running on February 2007.

The episode is sure the best one of the Season even if is little useful to judge a single episode of a long series of 23. Season 3 however is still inferior to the fans expectations.

I can say that this episode is intense, dramatic, romantic, etc etc, but I'm waiting for the true important event: in which way authors will be able to save series TV from the thousand mysteries that they have opened (and that they continue to open) and not still concluded.

However good job till now...and see you next February.

Meh
Zedyeti3 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching lost for the first time and I have enjoyed it for the most part because it is very different from the regular limitations that network garbage can handle but I have to say this season is a drag so far and so much of it has to do with utilizing the same cliche network drama crap other shows use. Sawyer and Kate in the cages being watched except when romance is involved? There's also so many chances to do something instead of stray along the storyline. And the crap going on back on the island with Locke and sayid needs to move on. Something for the love of god happen and go back to being original haha ok so I'm late to the party but hope I'm able to finish this out.

WORST SHOW EVER!!! - possible spoilers.
b_flic9 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Well they just LOST 3 viewers last night - my roommates and I are DONE! The Jack/Kate/Sawyer storyline is lame and has ALWAYS been lame. To focus on it for 4 out of 6 episodes is lame. Cliffhanger? Will Sawyer die? Who cares! Kill 'em all. Kate isn't EVEN hot anymore now that she's a cry-baby looking for love. Oh, and Sawyer con-man with a heart. Both characters have lost their teeth, and Jack is still annoying. Send them all home. Kill them. I don't care, just get rid of that storyline.

We'll come back when we return to Lock, Charlie, Hurley, Desmond, Sun, et al... the smoke monster's MUCH more interesting. What about Dharma. They all had Dharma scrubs! Has anyone forgotten about this.

Not too mention that there'll be about 20 lame recap episodes before February too...

I'm staying with Battlestar Galactica. See ya!

Kate Damnit RUN!!!
ametaphysicalshark3 December 2008
Contrary to what some say "I Do" is not the worst script by the generally brilliant Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. "... And Found" still holds that title, and will probably still hold it when the end of the show comes around. All things considered, that this is the culmination of the thoroughly evil Hydra island mini-season (a couple of later episodes would still include it, "Not in Portland" to shockingly good effect, but the real focus ended with this episode), "I Do" is reasonably successful, even though it is little more than a milking of soap-opera tension.

The Kate flashbacks here are surprisingly watchable when compared to the worst of her generally abysmal flashbacks, even though the attempts at 'emotion' barely qualify as not gag-worthy. When even Darlton (Damon Lindelof+Carlton Cuse for those not geeky enough to know) can't write very well for a character flashback you know there must be something wrong. Kate's alright on the island, and Evangeline Lilly is a fine actor who suffers from a lack of fan appreciation, but her back story is probably the show's biggest mistake. Other than the Hydra island story in general, which as we established earlier is PURE EVIL.

"I Do" is pretty much entirely based on cheap milking of tension and clichéd suspense tactics, but it works fairly well, especially considering how horrible the storyline it's wrapping up is. Kate getting out of her cage and the Sawyer/Kate love scene is really very, very naff but the rest of the island stuff is fun enough, especially Juliet and her interaction with Jack. Also, you just have to love Matthew Fox yelling "KATE DAMNIT RUN!!" Oh, it's just lovely.

With that out of the way the real season 3 would begin a few months later and take us on a far more involving and exciting adventure than this one.
