Lonely Hearts

Warning: Spoilers
Cold Case is one of the best Crime shows I watch. Law & Order, CSI, and all other shows linked to things of crime interest me. I wanted to watch this one, because I thought it looked interesting and I couldn't find a movie that I wanted to watch that night. The minute "The Look" by "Roxette" started I knew that this would be good. Kathryn Morris is a great actress and never ceases to amaze me. This episode showed how if you've always wanted to fall in love with the right person, make sure they're not con artists. Martha Puck is a short, chubby woman, who is obsessed with a fairy tale love story with the perfect ending, only when she meets the perfect guy, everything in her life seems just right, till someone comes to tell her just who he is... This episode twists and turns with suspense for me till the very end. One of the best COLD CASE episodes.

Warning: Spoilers
Often, women of a certain age, or with low self-esteem, wish to be romanced by guys that wouldn't look at them in real life. They end up reading novels that cater to their imaginations. Such is the case of Martha Puck, an overweight lady that one day decides to go into a dating service to find a man. It is clear that these places are a magnet for predators trying to make a killing by stealing what they can from these vulnerable souls.

When Martha receives a video from Ramon Delgado, a handsome Latin man, she is static. Going against her better judgment, Martha begins to see Ramon. She discovers one day Ramon is stealing her television set. That's a little too low for her. Before that, she had encountered a woman that tells her she is making a serious mistake by seeing Ramon. Martha, who is about to see Ramon goes out of her life, decides to go into a partnership with him. They'll entice lonely women with the promise Ramon will marry them, not before getting these naive ladies to turn over all their money to Ramon. Martha, in turn, will be the killer of the unsuspecting women.

The Cold Case detectives decide to make an investigation when new evidence comes into their unit about the murder of Martha Puck, some years before. They will get lucky in tracking down the real killer, who had a good reason for not only killing Ramon, but also getting rid of Martha Puck.

Liz Garcia, a frequent contributor to the series, gets her inspiration in the famous case of notorious killers of the last century. In fact, not much imagination is shown, as Ms. Garcia give names to the killing couple, similar to the real ones. John Peters directed. Emily Nelson and Bruno Campos appear as the ill fated criminals. Mary Pat Green plays Eugenia, a victim that lost everything because of Ramon's scheme. She is the key for solving the case.

In this chapter Nick Vera, gets involved with a teen neighbor that doesn't let him sleep because he decides to practice basketball right outside his basement apartment.

I'm a COLD CASE fan, but didn't like 'Lonely Hearts'

Warning: Spoilers
I thought most TV shows had a disclaimer about any resemblance to real life incidents being coincidental. This one was so coincidental it was as if Bruckheimer Productions was either 1) looking at a strictly young audience, or 2) assumed the audience it had was forgetful or stupid.

This episode made no effort to cover its resemblance to an infamous series of murders in the 1940's. Even the name was the same: "The Lonely Hearts murders". Raymond Fernandez & Martha Beck combed the newspaper personals ad's to find their victims, subsequently killing them. Martha Puck & Ramon Delgado? How creative is that? Try www.google.com, which will probably lead you to www.crimelibrary.com for this story. Fernandez & Beck died one after the other in Sing Sing's electric chair in '51. Puck & Delgado meet slightly dissimilar fates. The Bonnie & Clyde twist didn't improve the story any. The only remotely amusing part of this story was the usually crude Detective Nick Vera engrossing himself in the tawdry romance novels of Martha Puck, in order to understand her as a person. If you're a true crime buff, don't even bother with this one.
