Buried alive
jumbopasatebos11 March 2008
Though the theme of this episode, which involves the main characters being buried alive has become pretty common ( mainly since Tarantino's Kill Bill movies and his two CSI episodes,) here it is well executed and fits into the series really well.

Temperance and Booth discover two corpses left by the mysterious "Gravedigger", a villain that buries his victims alive asking for ransom within a time limit. He also abducts Temperance and buries her alive along with Hodges. While the most obvious couple of characters buried alive in a car would be Temperance and Booth the episode works because it takes advantage of their confessions to each other throwing light to both Booth/Brennan and Hodges/Angela's relationships (especially to the latter which has been on the spotlight throughout the season)…The episode, in general, throws some more light into it's "secondary" characters and the ways they are connected making them appear more than just a few "squints" (to quote Agent Booth's characterization).

We also see, for the first time, the spiritual side of Temperance and what she thinks about God. Her skepticism serves the episode well in terms of dialog and gives depth to her character.

Trapping the main characters into a car deep underground doesn't lead the series out of the fields of science. As Temperance and Hodgins are trapped inside the car they try to find ways to survive, including how to cope with Hodgin's wounds (he was hit by "Gravedigger's" car) and how to communicate with the outside world etc. Thus though with time the agony elevates, the series does not enter the field of "scare tactics" and maintains its focus. As for the ending it showcases the slow changes in Temperance's psyche and brings her a bit closer to Agent Booth. A crime novelist that follows "Gravedigger's" path is also shown here (played by "shield's" Benito Martinez) but his character is not analyzed thoroughly (but that's way to much to expect from a 40 minutes episode and the ending definitely leaves space for him to appear in the future?).

In all one of the best episodes of the second, much improved series, which demonstrates its true quality in characters and script writing. Another proof why a good forensic show can be effective and satisfying in many levels.

EXcellent Episode!
mitchrmp15 July 2016
We are introduced to the Grave Digger, which will have some related episodes in the upcoming seasons. While investigating, Dr. Brennan and Jack are buried alive in her car. Booth and the rest of the team work non-stop to find them before it's too late.

Jack and Angela's relationship is officially confirmed in this episode. Both express their deep feelings for the other, expressed after Jack's life in endangered.

Booth holds back no punches when it comes to finding Bones. He threatens a man's life, tells the squints what to do, and doesn't give up even when it looks like they are too late.

I love the Booth and Bones relationship. Anybody who can watch this show cannot tell me Booth is not totally in love with Bones! The emotions, the expressions, and his prayerful thankfulness at the end is all the proof we need!

Booth's running in the dirt to dig Bones out is a classic scene. The looks they share after only adds to the sweetness of the moment!

This story line is going to get worse before it gets better...If you like seeing Booths and Bones fighting to save each other, you'll defiantly want to watch the next one!

Favourite Bones Episode So Far
kierstenx21 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I just recently started watching "Bones", and as of right now, this is my favourite episode. I cried when the characters cried, I smiled when they smiled, and just all the emotion was raw and real. If I could, I'd watch this episode over and over, since the characters are just so amazing, and the script itself is flawless. If you haven't seen it already, and are a fan of this series, I definitely advise you to watch 2x09 (Aliens in a Spaceship). The season itself came out a good seven years ago, so there probably are very few of you have yet to see it, however for those who haven't, I won't include any spoilers. However, I can tell you that the Booth/Bones, but more specific, the Angela/Hodgins relationships will be emphasized on. (Zack also has a few cute moments - but I might be biased, seeing as how he's my favourite.) Overall, I absolutely loved this... and will watch many more times again.

One of the finest hours of television, ever
trixie303 April 2017
Confession first: We stopped watching "Bones" regularly somewhere in season 8. It had become less enjoyable for us and the whole Pelant story line went on too long, plus giving him amazing supernatural powers. We have watched episodes from time to time since then. And honestly, I agree with others that it became virtually impossible to listen to Emily Deschanel's voice and delivery change. I don't know whose idea it was, but it was a bad one, IMO.

Anyway, we were fanatical watchers during the first 6 seasons. As well, I have been reading Tempe Brennan books since the beginning. Although this Tempe and her life are vastly different, I think they did a good job carrying the spirit and dynamic in the show. The first four seasons in particular are, for us, excellent overall.

Now for "Aliens in a Spaceship." It's rare to find an episode of television drama that starts on a high note, extends the tension, weaves everything together, and then resolves on a quiet note. Where every word, every gesture, every scene is as meaningful as the others. Everything about this episode does all of that. It shows sides of characters we hadn't known or seen; it brings the team together on a deeper level; it helps individual relationships evolve; and most of all, it's simply an excellent plot, well written and directed, and fully embraced by the cast. I've seen it probably eight times over the years and it never gets old or boring. (As a frame of reference for my tastes, most episodes in season 1, especially those that advance the overall story, deepen the relationships, and/or give the viewer insight into characters' pasts, have remained favorites for me.) Don't miss this one!

The One Where Bones And Hodgin's Are Buried Alive...
taylorkingston29 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode. It's so good.

So, as you know, the infamous Gravedigger serial killer has killed a lot of people. Buried a lot a people. Made a lot of people angry. And this episode is no exception. In this episode, Bones and Hodgin's become the next victims of the Gravedigger murderer. They are buried alive in a car, and they don't have much time left. I do love how when they're down there, Hodgin's is talking all gushy and romantic about Angela. It's nice to see Hodgin's and Bones talking one on one, even if it is them trying to find a way out.

Overall, I give this episode a 9 out of 10.

Hey Bones Booth! Warning: Spoilers
This is such an iconic episode. I loved how this ep started it pulled you in right away. The Grave Digger is a great villain the thought of being buried alive is terrifying. This episodes guest star cast was awesome. I can't say you're completely wrong Bones but you had to know comparing a psychopath to his God would be very upsetting to Booth come on. Angela with the line of the episode lol " Mmm I don't know putting testicles on the outside didn't seem like a good idea." 3 grand a quarter ounce for perfume, must be nice to have that kind of money. Bones and Hodgins worked so well together to survive i enjoy their friendship. Hodgins congress joke is still very valid today.

THE SUSPENSE ON THIS ONE SLAPS!
amymthoms8 June 2021
This episode had me quaking in my boots from the very beginning.

It's such a dramatic episode and the timing is perfect!

The tension between the team within the episode really sets the pace and urgency of the plot, but as usual, is a very enjoyable watch! This also sets up a fantastic story line throughout the continuing seasons of bones, that continues to come back to haunt the team!

TOP BONES EP, also hey Bones Booth!
kaitlynnerainne9 June 2021
I just had to come over here and review this ep for the pod! We meet the next serial killer sequence on the show, "The Gravedigger" when Brennan and Booth discover two corpses of young brothers who we learn were buried alive. One of the things I enjoyed was that when Brennan was kidnapped, Hodgins interrupts in the same way the Kent brother's kidnapping was interrupted by the brother. So, as the case progresses, there's this juxtaposition between the two that I thought was well done. But also done where Brennan and Hodgin's case takes the front and center and it's one of the few we have that follows victims that are still alive.

Having Brennan and Hodgins in one location for most of the ep really gave way for Emily and TJ's strong and compelling acting skills to shine through (huge shout out to these two!). They both did a phenomenal job with making us believe they were in that car running out of time. The desperation was there and I felt it along with them. Cried when they cried and breathed a sigh of relief towards the end. It also gave us an opportunity to learn more about the Brennan/Booth and Hodgins/Angela relationships. We learn just how much Booth cares for his partner and we get a glimpse of just how crazy he gets when something happens to Brennan, I'm just here for it!

I could literally write a ten page essay about this episode but the emotional stakes were there, the tension running high, how much this team cares for each other and the glimpse into the found family trope that Bones is known for. All in all, great ep, loved it so much!!!

Stunning
kmkarlovic8 February 2022
This episode is breathtaking. The storyline, the rapport between the characters (especially Brennan and Hodgins which we don't typically get to see solo), the way all the characters came together and evolved just in this one epiapde.... definitely one of the best in all 12 seasons.

The story per se had me going nuts waiting to see how and when they were going to find them.

Booth never gave up and she knew he wouldn't.

Don't need to say more, do I?

Warning: Spoilers
This is my favourite episode by far, of most tv shows! I adore every second of it, although I'd have been crying real tears at losing that bottle of perfume! Booths pure panic at losing Bones and the church scene at the end is just *chefs kiss*

Ps Hi Bones Booth, love the show!

Well Conceived/Scientific and Dramaticc
Hitchcoc19 January 2023
The story begins with Hodgins and Brennan buried in a car. He is badly injured and she is shaken and they don't know where they are. It turns out there is a blackmailer called the Gravedigger who buries people, asks for a ransom, and if he gets the money, he gives their location. This is just a wonderfully paced rescue story that keeps us guessing all the way. It helps to cement relationships among the gang as Hodgins and Brennan do everything within their power, and the power of science, to stay alive until they can be rescued. I suppose the Gravedigger will resurface, so to speak, in some future episode.

Drama at its finest
NancyPi3149 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hi Bones Booth! This is in my top 3 most dramatic episodes of the series. I love it start to finish! Here's my favorite bits. Favorite happy, feel good bit, this is the first time we hear about the King of the Lab. Favorite heartwarming bit, Hodgins says he's rich, Bones says, "me too" and Hodgins looks at her like, awww that's cute. Favorite sad, feel good bit, when they think they're going to die and Hodgins says to Bones, "it's been a privilege" I always tear up.

Some other random thoughts. It's a good thing Booth let the call go to voicemail, otherwise they wouldn't have had a recording of the ransom message.

Even though we don't see who the Grave Digger is in this episode, I always find myself re-scared/pre-scared during this episode knowing they're out there. When I see the actor in other shows I can't think of them as anyone but the Grave Digger, that face will forever haunt me.

My "bone to pick" is that the amount of time it took them to send the text, wouldn't have even turned the phone on IRL, not to mention it's 12 key strikes instead of the 8 he says it will take due to the need for spaces.

Even with that unrealistic bit, this still remains one of my favorite episodes of Bones and I would give it more than 10 stars if I could.

Slow Burn Romance Intensified
darthmaulknits11 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Definitely one of my favorite episodes of Bones and one I anticipate it every time I rewatch the show. I think the Grave Digger is one of the best villains, so I'm always excited when this story line shows up.

I like how the plot deviates from the traditional crime procedural structure, and, of course, we love a countdown clock!! I also think the inventive science-y things Brennan and Hodgins do to survive while buried are so interesting.

Lastly, I will never get enough of the development of the personal relationships between Hodgins and Angela and Brennan and Booth. It is so heartbreaking when Hodgins and Brennan think they're going to die and both leave notes for their loved ones. Also, Booth pulling Brennan out of the ground in the end--MY HEART.

P. S. Hi, The Bones Booth! Love the show, keep up the great work!
