Gloomy
gridoon202425 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
It all begins with a hit-and-run incident, which results in the death of a 14-year-old girl. The driver had a good reason for speeding - he was the getaway driver in a jewel robbery. His two other accomplices manage to escape, but he is hospitalized and then arrested. But before they can question him, a hit-man on a bike shoots both him and the police officer who was with him at the time - a beloved, veteran cop called Eddie Carter. Needless to say, DCI Janine Lewis and everyone in her department are more than anxious to find the killer.

A very, very gloomy episode, with a resolution that's both unpredictable and a little underwhelming. Some new additions to the cast as well: a new (female) boss, who must be the first police boss of any gender I've ever seen that's calm and co-operative instead of an a$$hole, a new (female) detective who kind of stays in the background but is nice to have around, and a new, more grown-up actress playing Janine's elder daughter. **1/2 out of 4.

It takes so little for a copper to become unethical.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode starts the third series of Blue Murder. First the old grouchy DCS has retired or been retired and replaced by a woman who is a lot more dynamic and really gets involved in some high-profile cases. This case does not deal with a real social problem but with a real personal problem involving a very well regarded copper, his wife and his son who is a copper too, plus the commanding officer of this son. We get two lines of investigation about two cases but they are connected of course and it is your mission to go discover how and why. It is well done and well constructed. The reputation of a copper and of the police is at stake and is properly defended, though the unethical conduct cost the life of several innocent people, including an unborn baby. The outcome is definitely not what we were expecting and that's good.
