Cool idea to compare different kinds of serial killers
lottiemarshalllm9 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

I enjoyed this episode because of how the team showed two very different types of killers which I thought was an interesting topic to focus on.

I also really enjoyed the hunt for the different killers and all the different set ups that were made to catch them. I think it had some good plot twist and was pretty well written.

I also like how they focused on the fact that the media rarely covers murders of people of lower status like sex workers. And that the hollow man's victims did receive the recognition they deserve in the end.

My biggest fault with this episode is that the ending is rather anti-climactic in my opinion. Although I believe that not every episode needs to end with the shoot out or some really dramatic arrest it was just a little sad to see a good episode end within like 30 seconds.

I do have to say I really am looking forward to see agent Prentiss. I know that she'll be on the show for a while but I already like her straightforward and commanding presence so I'm excited to see her after not really liking Elle too much.

Overall interesting episode with a slightly slow story and rather anti-climactic ending.

Two serial killers in one story, plus the introduction of Emily Prentiss
TheLittleSongbird4 February 2017
Season 2 was a mostly solid season, with the only average at best episode being "Honor Among Thieves" and particularly great episodes being "The Fisher King Part II", "Revelations", "Profiler, Profiled", "North Mammon" and "The Boogeyman".

"The Last Word" is notable for the introduction of Emily Prentiss. Although her screen time is short and not much is known about her or how she came to get the job in the first place, there is comfort knowing that she went on to become one of 'Criminal Minds' best and most popular characters and there is nothing really that annoyed me about her, much warmer personality than Elle. Paget Brewster holds her own.

Another interest point is the storyline involving two serial killers competing with each other. A great job is done with the two, especially the genuinely creepy "Mill Creek Killer", and with the contrasts between their crimes. The story here has a good deal of tension and suspense, a highlight scene being the interrogation scene with Gideon really knowing how to twist the knife in and making one feel uneasy.

Visually, "The Last Word" is as stylish, classy and atmospheric as one would expect, while the direction is solid and the music haunting and melancholic. The script provokes thought and structured with enough tightness, and the team work, character interaction and profiling are great. As are the embedded references.

The acting all round is great, Mandy Patinkin as ever showed great authority and in support Jason O'Mara is suitably eerily twisted.

My only complaints with "The Last Word" are a slightly rushed ending and the team's all too risky plan of capturing "Hollow Man", the killer's behaviour also being the opposite as to how he behaved in the rest of the episode. Instead of being as smart and perhaps even smarter than the killer he was competing with he acted very dumb.

In summary, very solid episode if not one of my favourites. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Watched a rerun of this episode on Ion this evening. I knew the Agent (actor) looked very familiar. He reminded me of that bizarre commercial where the dude has a singing head growing out of his back. He arrives at the dealership to buy the car he researched online. As the customer and car salesman speak, the third head sings. Dubbed- "Confidence comes standard" or "Confident You." Its one of those things that bugs you until you satisfy the curiosity. After a web search, I was right. That's him acting in this previous Super Bowl commercial that's now running on Ion during the commercial breaks for this episode. Too funny!

mother of first prostitute?
planetmeridian26 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The mother of the prostitute who left her children home alone. When Hotch came to the apt to interview her, she was drinking and she asked him if he was there to judge her. Can anyone tell me this woman's name? At first I thought it was Ronnie Spector, but I think I confuse this actress with her a lot. Let me know because it's bugging the heck out of me.

I loved the guy who player the Hill killer, he played in an episode of the closer as a serial killer who forced women to drink alcohol (sp) and then set them on fire. He was basically fascinated with fire. He was one of the few people I believe Brenda was actually afraid of.

I've seen this episode of Criminal Minds a couple of times, it was good to see how Prentice first became a part of the team and how each person reacted to her.

I noticed her as well..she looked so familiar.. turns out her name is Deborah Van Valkenburgh .. she played YEARS ago in The Warriors, Too Close for Comfort as Ted Knights daughter (turns out this is where her face looked familiar from so many years ago..isn't that strange?

She looks the same but just older) and in many other TV shows as well...like Star Trek Deep Space Nine as Preston Hope you get this message.. I couldn't find a "reply" button so this is the best I could do.. I kept replaying this part over and over again when I saw her because I so wanted to know who she was.. funny that's the only review this episode got. I LOVE Criminal Minds and am hooked on it, watching from season 2 and season 3 first and then I'll go back to season one.. after that I'll up to 4, 5 Chey
