“If I had had a home, I would have never ended up in Seoul station.”
Over the last decade, zombie movies have become something which many had never anticipated: a part of our pop culture. Looking back at the most prominent entries into the genre, from George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead” to Lucio Fulci’s “Zombie Flesh Eaters”, perhaps no none would have thought the undead would be on prime time television, attracting millions of viewers. However, while the themes of films like “28 Days Later”, “The Zombie Diaries” and “The Walking Dead” may have changed, the overall nature of the genre has not been touched. You can even go so far as to say the real artistry behind the zombie genre is truly to paradoxically bring new life, fresh ideas to the shuffling (or sometimes running) zombies.

When it comes to British horror films, you’ve hopefully already seen the likes of 28 Days Later, The Descent and Mum & Dad. Maybe you’ve watched The Zombie Diaries, Eden Lake and Panic Button (if you haven’t, you should address that immediately).
As anyone of a certain vintage will inform you, Britain has a rich horror heritage, and there’s much more to the genre than Dracula and Frankenstein. There’s Witchfinder General, with Vincent Price as Matthew Hopkins, a real-life prosecutor of witches, plus The Blood On Satan’s Claw, about 17th Century devil worshippers. And that’s just for starters.
Even if we eschewed Hammer and restricted ourselves to the “old school” horror actors (Price, Christopher Lee, Donald Pleasance), the list would include Madhouse, Death Line, Theatre Of Blood and House Of The Long Shadows, among others. Again, not too shabby.

There’s captivating imagery in the latest trailer for Treehouse, the first traditionally filmed feature from Michael G. Barrlett, director of The Zombie Diaries and The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill. Here, he trades the camcorder aesthetic and UK setting for an Americana-infused youth-oriented thriller, and we’ll see the result this February. Hitting next month from Uncork’d, Treehouse begins when Elizabeth (Dana Melanie)…

Technical difficulties tend to intertwine with my work every once and awhile. One of those times is when I had a phone interview with director Michael Bartlett. Bartlett is coming into St. Louis to promote his latest film, Treehouse. I didn’t realize until a few hours prior to the interview that Bartlett was the co-director of The Zombie Diaries and Zombie Diaries 2. Prior to calling Bartlett, I did some research – as I usually do – and got my questions ready. Typically, when I do interviews, I try to be more conversational than just ask questions. It seems to flow better for both myself and the subject of the interview. I’m also always interested in what got said subject into creating something in the genre as well as their background with the genre.
After I prepped “guideline” questions, I called Bartlett and proceeded to have about an hour long conversation with him.

Britsih-born director Michael Bartlett made a name for himself in horror circles with The Zombie Diaries, its sequel, The Zombie Diaries 2. and The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill. His latest shocker is Treehouse. When a young girl and her little brother are the latest to go missing without a trace, their hometown imposes a curfew, and no one is allowed to go out after dark. But two brothers break the rules, and when they unwittingly stumble across an old treehouse deep in the woods, they find themselves in the middle of an unimaginable nightmare. Inside the treehouse, the brothers discover the missing girl, terrified and hiding, but her brother has vanished. Together, the trio will soon face a fight for survival against an unexpected and bone-chilling evil.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Michael Bartlett. Director: Michael Bartlett. Writers: Alex Child and Miles Harrington. Cast: J. Michael Trautmann, Dana Melanie and Daniel Fredrick. Treehouse is a suspense thriller from four time feature film director Michael Bartlett (The Zombie Diaries). The film was adapted to screen from Alex Child and Miles Harrington's script. Currently at the Cannes Film Festival, an opportunity to review this film early was provided to this film fan and some thoughts on Treehouse are hosted here. Thoroughly suspenseful, Treehouse is a well-paced thriller, which brings a lot of emotion to the screen. A supernatural or malicious physical element is plaguing a pair of teenagers and tension is built by this threatening element. This title is a standout indie feature, because of its attention to directing techniques and the performances provided by actors J. Michael Trautmann and Dana Melanie.

Treehouse is a mysterious horror feature from director Michael Bartlett (The Zombie Diaries). A film poster for this title was released in mid-2013. And recently, Imagination Worldwide has released a sales trailer for the feature. The clip shows several teenagers dealing with a group of shadowy figures. The clip also reveals a lot about the film. And, Treehouse stars J. Michael Trautmann (Here Comes the Boom), Dana Melanie and Daniel Fredrick. The story for Treehouse focuses on missing teenagers and shades in the local woods. Two high school students are kidnapped and two brothers find one of the victims. Elizabeth (Melanie) is alone and afraid in an isolated fort and several shadows lurk below. All three will have to face an unimaginable evil, if they are to survive the night. Imagination Worldwide is both a sales agent and distributor. So, this film is likely moving towards a release date. Embracing the hoary old adage "truth is stranger than fiction", the creators of The Zombie Diaries series decided to turn their camera on the real-life urban legends and haunted tales of unexplained phenomena that have scared people for decades. The new series is called The Paranormal Diaries and the first investigation centers on the legend of Clophill, the real-life resting place of St. Mary's Church where cults and satanists are rumored to have congregated in the 60s and 70s. During pre-production of Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates’ sequel to The Zombie Diaries, the duo were able to shoot an “in-between” film called The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill that mixes real interviews of an occult landmark with a written-in fictional story.
Here’s what Kevin Gates had to say about the film:
“We shot The Paranormal Diaries: Clophill during the pre-production of Zombie Diaries 2 when there were a whole series of setbacks with funding the sequel. During the pre-production period I was itching to get something shot, and there was just time to squeeze in an ‘in-between’ film. The idea of taking back control, making the kind of film we wanted and could take our time over was very appealing.”
Gates continues, “I grew up in an area of Bedfordshire in the UK rich in legends of witchcraft and knew of a local ruin that had a history of black...

The living dead are here to stay, and British filmmakers Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlett, directors of 2006’s The Zombie Diaries, are back in the arena and fighting fit with the sequel The Zombie Diaries 2: World Of The Dead. The original was a huge success in America, which led Gates and Bartlett to receive the backing to create the ambitious and—and it must be said—excellent hardcore splatter sequel (out today on DVD and Blu-ray from Dimension Extreme) that will satisfy the most demanding gorehound. The military take on the zombie hordes.
Take the faux reportage style of The Blair Witch Project and the English zombie revivalism of 28 Days Later, throw a positively minuscule budget at it, and you get Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates' The Zombie Diaries which, though both amateurish and undoubtedly opportunistic, earned its place in the annals of film history as the first of its kind. World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 is a sequel to the 2006 film The Zombie Diaries. Much like the zombie antagonists, World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 is a lifeless thriller that has been described as "the world's most tedious zombie movie" (Daily) and "lacking character development" (Mirror). Released on DVD in the United Kingdom June 27th, this film shambles around at a monotonous pace, until the ending finally finds something brilliant (irony). But most viewers will have fallen down dead from boredom before these final few minutes.
A squad of territorial soldiers embarks from their virus overrun bunker in search of Hope's Point. Here, there is a possible rescue by ships from Rotterdam. Zombies walking at 1/4 km an hour drive the plot at a sedate pace, as Maddox (Philip Brodie) urges his squad forward. Then, the first of three exploitative rapes begins,...

A trailer has finally arrived for Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates' sequel to their sleeper hit The Zombie Diaries. Unfortunately it's not in the best shape, and I've been in contact with the team to try and get a better copy, but for now you can get a low-res taste of the horrors that await you.
Synopsis:
Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world's population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal, but hope appears when a high-level communication is received from a military base on the coast, telling of sanctuary elsewhere in Europe...
But just as salvation appears to be in reach, the base suffers an overwhelming defeat at the hands of the living dead!

Tooth and Nail, or they are more ambitious. In the AMC television series "The Walking Dead" the infection is global and in this latest film, the rotting dead are violently hungry for braaaiiinnsss!! In Michael Bartlett's follow-up to the 2006 The Zombie Diaries, you best be armed to fight the apocalypse, as the trailer tells us. Metrodome has released a UK trailer for their upcoming “The Zombie Diaries 2: World of the Dead” (or actually, they’re calling it the other way around, “World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2″, which doesn’t really make sense, but whatever). The film builds on the 2006 low-budget original, though honestly, the budget doesn’t look as if it’s gotten noticeably bigger, and they’re still using the shot-on-a-camera gimmick. Still, I liked the first one, so I’m definitely giving the sequel a spin. Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates, who directed the first one, returns for the second go-round. Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world’s population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK, a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal,...

I wasn't a big fan of The Zombie Diaries, yet the newly released trailer for Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlet's World Of The Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 looks pretty damn intense. The production value is topnotch and some of the imagery is quite dark (the people lined up to be shot). Halcyon International Pictures has updated their website with word of several news small budgeted genre pics featuring alien, android, and zombie invaders, as well as updates of Dracula and The Mummy under their "Famous Monsters of Filmland" banner.
One thing is absolutely certain: Battle: Los Angeles has been a huge influence on their marketing department. Take for example a Halcyon movie titled Day 2 (original story here) that I wrote about last year which combines an alien invasion with a zombie invasion. The title has since been changed to Battle NY: Day 2.
Los Angeles is also the setting of Alien Armageddon, in case the tag line "The Battle for Los Angeles Has Begun" didn't clue you in.
"An alien race invades Earth, destroying all the major cities of the world, leaving Los Angeles as the last remaining city left to fight back."
As is annoyingly the case with Halcyon, their website...

Going big for the sequel!
It's not a huge update, but director Michael Bartlett (The Zombie Diaries) has been using his Twitter to update fans on the progress of the sequel, titled World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2.
One week down on World Of The Dead ... and it is apparent we have a British World War Z on our hands.
The original Zombie Diaries told three separate stories of survivors during the zombie apocalypse, but the sequel has already sought out 1,000 zombie extras, implying that the scale might be tipping for the sequel.
The first day of shooting was on November 14, as evident in this Tweet.
About to make a long, cold trek to Raf Bentwaters for first day of principal photography on World Of The Dead.

Back in May we reported on the announcement that Halcyon International Pictures was preparing a slate of low budget movies based on classic movie monsters under the "Famous Monsters of Filmland" banner. What better day than Halloween to bring you word of the trailer for the first in this new horror series: Dracula: Reborn?
Dracula: Reborn is a low budget retelling of Bram Stoker's classic vampire tale transplanted to modern day Los Angeles. Victoria Summer of The Zombie Diaries stars as Mina Harker. Corey Landis, one of the stars of Dinocroc vs. Supergator, co-stars as Johnathan Harker. In the role of Dracula himself is Stuart McKenna, an actor whose most high profile credit to this day would appear to be that of a Tom Cruise look-a-like in Meet the Spartans.

It was officially announced today that Kevin Gates and Michael Bartlett are teaming back up for World Of The Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 The film is scheduled for release in 2011. No details have been released, but we got our hands on the art inside. The Zombie Diaries took place in the early part of the 21st Century where an unknown virus began spreading among the populous. Within weeks it had engulfed the entire planet, from the smallest rural communities to the greatest cities. Upon the death of its host, the virus would reanimate the corpse until it was no longer able to support itself. Soon, the planet was infested with a new threat - the undead. So begins our journey into the dystopian world of The Zombie Diaries.

Director Michael Bartlett just checked in to let us know that his sequel to the very popular The Zombie Diaries (review here) is well on its way and has a new title and even a new teaser one-sheet! Ready for the goods?
The new film is now being called World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2, and Bartlett is getting set to shoot from a script from long-time collaborator Kevin Gates.
Like Romero's Diary of the Dead, only made before it, The Zombie Diaries was a pretty disturbing flesh-eating opus shot in the style of cinéma-vérité. Plot details on the sequel are for now scarce, but rest assured we'll have an interview with Bartlett soon that should flesh things out for you!
