Just another movie ...
krityx3 June 2007
Well, I watched this recently and I can say this is a movie like thousand other movies out there... The script was poor, the acting isn't so great. I was expecting at least some good fighting scenes, but the fighting scenes in this movie are ordinary fighting scenes... Well, Overall this is a action, fun-to-watch movie. If you'd like some action and you'd like to have some fun or anything then watch it, bot don't expect something really good. I think that the first one (Half Past Dead) was much better than this one. Well, I give this film 5 stars out of 10, and i also think it's a little bit too much for this movie, but hey it's an almost-decent movie.

supermax

this is billed as a sequel to the first half past dead with steven seagal,, this one does not feature seagal,, but instead the pro wrestler. Bill Goldberg,, Korrupt is back,, but not Ja Rule.. this one isn't quite as good as the first,, Twitch gets himself transferred to Creighton which is probably based on Super Max the prison out in Colorado. Bill Goldberg is caught up in the middle of a gang war in prison along with Korrupt,, Korrupt has a sexy girlfriend, and Bill Goldberg a teen daughter who both get trapped inside the prison on visiting day,, a riot ensues and game on.. they kinda try to tie in the first movie with this one,, but really isn't the same.. Tony Plana makes a cameo appearance as the warden on Alcatraz, this movie is okay, but very hard to beat the first one.

'I ain't no snitch....'

Warning: Spoilers
for those of you who were desperate to find out what happened to Twitch in the original movie, heres your chance, and then get back to the real world.

The guy who hid the gold in the first movie told Twitch, so he gets transferred to another prison, where wrestling champs hang around looking broody. Twitch plans to leave the jail in a month to get the gold to start a life with his woman.

Then something happens and someone gets shot, and the film turns into Die Hard in another prison. But the wrestler's daughter is caught up in it all, so he and twitch go to find her and Twitch's woman.

As you can imagine, the acting is below par, it features a lot of (really annoying) rap music, and poorly edited fight scenes. On the plus side, it's got that Hispanic bloke in it, who stars in every prison/action/thriller ever made, and he shuts a door in this.

It's not very eventful, but at least it's harmless.

If you were a massive fan of the original, it's okay-ish stuff.

If not, you have been warned.

Annoying.

Watching this on local cable while i type this.

Wow, just wow.... Can't believe how stupid this movie is and how poor the acting is. That guy Kurupt is so annoying, I had to mute the sound.

Gave it a try only because of Goldberg, but he wasn't impressive at all.

All the fight scenes were weak and amateurish, all jokes were poor, all dialogues was empty.

Crappy script and annoyingly poor acting - hat's what this movie is all about.

Half Past Dead on Arrival 2
Newsense21 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
WOW! Why would anybody make a sequel to an already rancid film? Half Past Dead was a bad movie but at least at had an idea of what it wanted to be. HPD2 has no clue of what it wants to be. It just exists on screen for reasons I cant explain. Spoiler: The whole movie is this: Twitch(played by Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound) gets transferred to another jail where there might be a box filled with gold bricks buried. In the jail, a riot breaks out between rival inmates, one of them gets shot by a guy named Cortez and Cortez plans his escape. During a conjugal visit, Twitch's fiancée and Burke's(played by Bill Goldberg)daughter get kidnapped by Cortez and are held in an execution room. Burke reluctantly befriends Twitch and they end up getting into trouble with the idiotic inmates while finding out that Cortez has their loved ones.

Opinion: This is the most unnecessary sequel since Universal Soldier: The Return. The script is terrible, the acting is horrendous, the dialog is a joke and everybody in this movie is a caricature. Look, I know it was low budget film but that is not an excuse for these guys to not put effort into what they do. Nobody in this "movie" believes in the characters they play. Nobody in this "movie can be taken seriously as an actor. Kurupt should be ashamed of himself. His character "Twitch" is pretty much a spineless minstrel puppet who spends most of his time posing while getting jacked up by Burke or the other inmates. Bill Goldberg spends most of his time sulking throughout the movie as if he had to take a PHD(pretty huge dump). The fight scenes are poorly choreographed and pathetic and for an action movie HPD2 is pretty boring even when action is happening! Don't let anybody tell you that this movie is somewhat decent. It stinks and is a prime reason why people despise Follywood.

Goldburke

Goldberg. To anyone who knows him he's an unstoppable force, sheer brutality in the ring, 173 win streak, 285 pounds of intensity.

Trying his hand at acting, I expect he'll be lending some of those qualities into another blistering performance. This time in Half past dead 2.

However, watching about 30 minutes of it I soon discover the problem, the writers have seemed to borrow heavily from the first Shrek film. His character Burke, is just Shrek with a goatee and Kurupt, providing the 'comic relief' is just a p*ss poor Donkey. Sticking true to the shrek storyline the main focus of the film is to 'rescue the princess' In this case there's two of them, Burke's daughter and Donkey's bitch. They have both been kidnapped during a prison riot which I guess was tossed in to throw us off the scent of the swamp.

During the riot you are treated to a selection of fights that look like they'be been choreographed by David Blunkett, a 'rent a Mexican prisoner' royal rumble consisting of Hispanic actors who have been in every cheap prison b movie out there and some of the worst character acting by Bill Goldberg your ever likely to see. While all that action takes place, you have the pleasure of a whiny amateurish gangster rap soundtrack that sounds like it was written by a 13 year old in Portsmouth.

In conclusion, stick to wrestling.

this sequel has almost nothing to do with the first one.it's takes place in a prison like the first one did.but it's inferior in every way.the story is lacklustre, the characters aren't really believable.the whole thing is just an exercise in random noise and chaos, with no real direction.and while the acting in the first movie may not have been Oscar worthy,it was Shakespearean compared to what transpired here.i don't mind saying i was pretty bored throughout this yawn fest.it doesn't distinguish itself from other movies of the genre, nor does it even attempt to.i'd definitely give this one a miss, unless you're a big fan of Bill Goldberg.for me,Half Past Dead 2 is a 3/10

Just stupid

Most sequels are not up to standards with the original but this takes the price in being completely out of sane plot or even script.

Surprisingly watchable
tawdry_hepburn28 June 2008
Half Past Dead 2.

Think about that for a moment. Does that mean, "Half Past Dead, As Well" or "Two Individuals who are Both Half Past Dead in equal measure" or, "3 Times as Dead as the Average Corpse"? I don't know, but logic was never the strong suit of this wouldbe prison riot franchise.

When the first Half Past Dead came out Steven Seagal wasn't the joke he is today. He was simply box office poison. The movie grossed 15 million dollars and quietly ended the theatrical career of Seagal. Since then, Seagal has gone on to star in about a dozen direct-to-video actioners. Oddly however, he is not in this sequel.

Instead, we get rapper Kurupt returning as the whiny wise guy, "Twitch" and new-comer Bill Goldberg as a framed felon with a heart of gold. Continuing the series' standard of actor/directors Art Camacho takes over from Don Michael Paul as director of the shenanigans.

Instead of just resetting the series and using the name and general premise (annoying B-level rapper sidekick and innocent white ass kicker) as a selling point, Half Past Dead 2 legitimizes its' existence by continuing the plot of the first film which centered around $200 million in missing gold. Twitch knows where said gold is, as does another prisoner who is to be paroled before Twitch. Twitch does the only logical thing, picks a prison fight and gets sent to a prison closer to the gold's location…obviously.

Twitch plans to break out of prison. But before anything happens, a riot breaks out while Goldberg's daughter and Twitches fiancé are visiting. Mayhem ensues.

It's almost needless to say, but Half Past Dead 2 is not a very good movie. There are massive logic jumps. The main plot is predicated on the assumption that a man can yell a name in a crowed room, pull out a gun and shoot someone, and then frame another man for the crime. The rest of the movie feels oddly reminiscent of Lets Go to Prison.

Also, Kurupt's Twitch, the film's main protagonist, is more annoying than he clever. His motivations are not always clear, and Goldberg's performance could not be flatter if the film were animated

Still, the film is oddly watchable. Thanks to Camacho's energetic direction that makes the most of the film's obviously microscopic budget, and some solid (for the genre) performances from the bit players.

And then there is the guy who has his face tattooed right below his face on his neck. Yeah, it's that kind of movie. Whereas recent big budget fair like Grindhouse tried to imitate this kind of film, Half Past Dead 2 is a real entry into the genre of schlocky B-grade ultra-violent grindhouse fair. While it doesn't hold a candle to the inspired brutality of say, Sonny Chiba's The Streetfighter, or the out and out lunacy of Roger Corman's Death Race 2000, Half Past Dead 2 does hold its' own. It's not great, but it's definitely better than the original and nothing painful to watch.

Half way decent
ogdendc20 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a sequel to one of the worst movies Steven Seagal was ever involved with, but he bailed out on this one, which greatly improved things. This is watchable, but not particularly memorable.

A prison inmate called Twitch (played by Kurupt) and another called William Burke (played quite convincingly by Bill Goldberg) are holed up together in a jail where Twitch believes there is some gold buried. Really? Twitch is visited by his fiancée Cherise (Angell Conwell) and Burke by his daughter Ellie (Alona Tal). Anyway, a riot breaks out in the jail, and Alex Cortez (Robert Madrid) kills a fellow inmate, and two guards, then tries to escape. The two visitors get held hostage by Cortez.

Burke and Twitch are already driven together, as the prison becomes ungovernable and the guards seem unable to reassert control despite many fight scenes. Cortez demands a helicopter ride out, or he will kill the hostages. One arrives. But Burke and Twitch find Cortez first. Cue another fight scene.

The script is poor, but has a certain logic to it. The fight scenes are numerous but samey. The dialogue is amateur. Camera-work isn't too bad. Half way decent.

An overall cool action movie with no special effects,smoke,explosions,etc... Just Guns and Fights ! And Actually a semi-good plot.

I give this movie a Big 6 out of 10 (wanted to give it more but just couldn't!).

Believe me, you won't regret watching it.

Too soft, weak, boring and needs proper action and more tension
nims-197524 March 2019
Half Past Dead 2 is a film which i definitely would recommend not watching. Straight to the point, it's crap, is definitely too soft and weak and the film needs proper action and more tension. The acting in this film isn't good and the film is quite boring. The film has nothing to do with the first film and is a very lame sequel. It also doesn't star Steven Seagal, Morris Chestnut, Ja Rule, Nia Peeples or any of the actors from Half Past Dead. It has a completely different cast and has Bill Goldberg(who was crap) acting in it and has only two stars from Half Past Dead and they are Kurupt as Twitch and Tony Plana as El Fuego. Half Past Dead starring Steven Seagal, Morris Chestnut, Jau Rule, Nia Peeples, Tony Plana and Kurupt is an absolutely brilliant film with awesome action, fight scenes tension and loads more but this film lacks everything in loads of ways. There lots of things about this film that were crap and rubbish and the film really is a lame film.

mikeone496-21-1697621 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
We missed the original thankfully & had NO idea how this box of fake lookin gold prompted the movie. We're bewildered that neither the writers nor IMDb has ANY mention of this $200m in this sequel either. Thanks to the reviewers we now have some clue, yet wonder if the gold recovered is subject to return to the gumbent, Wells Fargo or does that big guy, the battleaxe & her pimp gonna git away widit all? Oh da horror!

Riveting but dumb
briancham19941 June 2020
This movie was more riveting than the original but it is still quite dumb. There is more tension because of the hostages and their attempts to escape. However, the film is still a let down overall.

Surprisingly entertaining
Leofwine_draca20 August 2013
HALF PAST DEAD 2 is the follow up to a prison flick starring Steven Seagal (during one of his fatter periods) most people have never heard of. This sequel jettisons Seagal, replacing him with wrestler-turned-actor Bill Goldberg and pairing him up with rapper-turned-actor Kurupt.

Despite the poverty-row budget and the distinct lack of originality in terms of the premise, HALF PAST DEAD 2 is a film that proves to be surprisingly entertaining. The reason is down to the narrative, which eschews the usual prison drama clichés and replaces them with a backdrop involving a massive prison riot which leads to almost non-stop suspense and action.

The movie has plenty of flaws, not least in the script which gives almost every character defunct dialogue to spout. Goldberg (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: THE RETURN) is too poor an actor to elicit sympathy, but he's better than the obnoxious Kurupt and the rest of the walking stereotypes making up the supporting cast. Watch out for Robert LaSardo, once again playing to type.

The action is fairly poorly handled but the pacing is spot on and I found myself caught up in the cheesy events as they moved towards something of a climax. It's certainly no classic but I enjoyed it more than the substantially more expensive original which is saying something.

Didn't see it yet, but...
perro315-18 June 2022
Wasn't overwhelmingly fond of the first cinematic effort to begin with, but, more to the point, wouldn't "Half Past Dead 2" more accurately be titled "Completely Past Dead"?!
