L'araignelephant-or The Spider Elephant-is another of Piotr Kamler's abstractly interesting animated films
tavm26 July 2010
This is another animated short directed by Piotr Kamler that I watched on YouTube as linked from the Cartoon Brew site. The version I saw had French narration but no English subtitles so once again, I didn't really understand what was going on but-as with many of Kamler's films-the visuals were abstractly fascinating to see and there was weird but wonderful music and sound effects going on so that was something to look forward to. The other reviewer mentioned something about amoebas and I know the title translated into English is "The Spider Elephant". One visual I can describe is that there is a multiple-wall-like structure that has plenty of eyes blinking with this "spider elephant" walking on it. Okay, with what I just described, it's up to you whether you want to watch L'araignelephant or The Spider Elephant. Like I said, at least it's fascinating to watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Very strange short film about unusual creatures not really doing anything. It was incredibly interesting to watch, and the music and sound effects fit perfectly. It gave me the impression I was watching microscopic life forms (and they do mention an amoeba).

The reason I'll only give this a two is because of the story. Maybe something was lost in the translation (I heard the English narrated version), but this was totally ridiculous. And not in a campy, enjoyable way--more like a wince-inducing pretentious misfire. Contains lines such as, "Spider Elephant continued walking forward, in the same direction, because... that's what he did." Possibly meant to be some sort of allegory, but more likely someone did some nice animation and couldn't really think up much of a story to go with it.
