the mystery actor is...
stolenXmoments27 July 2008
the actor who plays the hawk is Charles "chip" Esten. he guest starred in a few episodes of "whose line is it anyway?" and "the office" as well as many other TV shows. he's a really great singer and should have been credited for being in the show. I'm not sure why they didn't list him in the credits, but he can be easily found on this very website.

this episode was great, and the song at the end was perfect for the time frame. it's a shame you can't buy the song anywhere. at least i haven't found any sites where it is possible. cold case is always moving and the songs at the end really add to that effect. this is definitely one of my favorites series.

casting question
rmg230 October 2006
This was interesting considering the effect of payola back then. Does anyone know who the actor was that played the "Hawk"? There is no mention of him in the credits or the cast.... I find it interesting that the police can retrace cases that were 30 years old and with new technology can finally come up with concrete evidence to find the culprit. I also enjoyed seeing several of the cast member outside of the roles I know them from. Especially Cari Shayne. Haven't seen her for a long time since she was on General Hospital, The same for Chad. He will always be Xander. I thought the use of flashback characters was a good idea too.

The Hawk

Warning: Spoilers
The making of a documentary about a Philadelphia disc jockey, John "The Hawk" Hawkins, revealed a tape of the program of the night that the famous radio personality committed suicide. Rock and Roll was a sensation of the moment and The Hawk was the man that gave the Philadelphia teens the music they loved to hear. His untimely death left the kids without an idol. The filmmakers of the documentary, through new technology, establishes there was a second person in the studio where Hawkins conducted his radio show, something that was overlooked in the initial investigation. The police deemed the incident was a suicide.

The Cold Case team went into a full investigation of the incident. Hawkins' first wife, Dottie, is visited by the detectives. She had been divorced for a time and had only contacted her former husband about the sale of the house that she bought with her own money, but needed to get his signature. The unit moves to "Bones" Hamlin, an ambitious man, who was Hawk's assistant. Payola was a big problem in those days when criminals thought about buying disc jockeys to play the music they were pushing.

The detectives' attention is turned to Jenny, a young woman who had an infatuation with The Hawk. She too was a teenager that wanted to be in show business and felt that the radio personality would help her. In fact, the Cold Case team learn that a song that Jenny had recorded was the one that was playing at the time of Hawkins' death. Jenny, it turns out had a lot at stake, as did Dottie, who didn't reveal she knew more than what she told the detectives in her original interview.

The episode was directed by Kevin Bray, and written by Gavin Harris, a man that has contributed to the show frequently. Mr. Harris' script is about one of the best in the series because it involves the viewer from the start. It is a credible story and the parts that lead up to the solving of the crime are well developed.

Julie Adams, an actress who has enjoyed a long career in films and in television makes an appearance as Dottie, the estranged wife of The Hawk. Rutanya Alda plays the older Jenny. Charles Esten is seen as the dead disc jockey. Danny Pino is seen on a vignette coming to terms with his brother's depression.

The song Jenny wrote

Could you tell me where I can get the music "Scarlet Rose"? I can't get the tune out of my head. I saved the show on my TIVO so I can hear the music. This was the song that Hawk played when he was killed and the song played throughout the show. I also enjoyed watching the captain do a little soft shoe to the amusement of his staff. Another outstanding episode that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was wondering why the character that played Hawk was not listed in the credits? For future shows, I like when the show goes back in time at least 40 years. Sometimes, the show will only go back a few years. I realize the younger version of the characters is not the same as the present ones, but it portrays a more realism to the show.

Scarlet Rose

I too have recently seen this episode of Cold Case entitled: "Static" from 2006. Being a new fan to this awesome series, I became fixed on the song "Scarlet Rose" that was played throughout the show and did days of research to find the correct artist behind it with the voice of gold. Many people have stated that it is Alexa Ray Joel, (Daughter of Billy Joel & Christie Brinkley) but although Joel has a beautiful voice, the correct name of the artist that sings this amazing song is ALEXA KHAN and it is available for purchase on:

HTTP:www.myspace.com/alexakhan

Alexa is truly an up and coming star in the making with crisp clean vocals that will leave an impression in your heart and mind for some time to come.

found song Scarlet Rose!

If you're looking for the Scarlet Rose song, you can find it on Limewire. If you search for 'Gary Haase' in the field 'Artists' you get a few results that are fake, but one of them is called: Cold Case Soundtrack - CD4 Track 06 - Gary Haase - Scarlet Rose.

I really liked this episode. They are doing reruns here in the Netherlands to catch up everyone in the summer until they are running season 5 over here and I really liked to see this episode again. The previous episode I found less interesting, the one with the 6 month old baby, but still, Cold Case is great and has the best music in their episode. I cannot count how many songs I purchased or downloaded just from their episodes. Mostly the final song of the episode is the best one. So big applause for their music director. You rock!

Hope this could be of any help with finding the song.

This is one of my favorite episodes of Cold Case, Much like many watchers I loved the song at the end, ran numerous searchers, checked the shows website even but no word of this version .. only the instrumental

Finally with a lot of work and many more searches online I FINALLY managed to find the "Scarlet Rose " song from the end of this episode off a foreign blog, The song is Scarlet Rose - by Alexa Ray Joel (Billy Joel's daughter) Hope this helps all of you fellow watchers who just can't get the song out of your heads either ! ^_^

Now I have a question ... Does anyone have a clue on what the Carolina song is that plays when the Hawlk is in the nightclub, blasting out his intern for taking payola? Thanks in advance
