Great Final "Draft"...
Guardia25 November 2007
"In the Army" sees the two, well, joining the army. After a brief induction ceremony (with reference to the head-shaving in "Full Metal Jacket"), the two find themselves on barracks dealing with a hard-ass Drill-Sargent who is barely understandable due to his heavy (Texan?) accent.

Of course, the two make terrible soldiers, and Stimpy (although unquestioningly follows commands), manages to wind-up in trouble with Ren, who is constantly looking for short-cuts in the training. Their punishments are always some form of peeling something (potatoes, watermelons, and some even stranger "supplies").

This episode is a pretty good take on the old misfits-join-the-army routine, and Ren & Stimpy certainly add their trademark to the situation. Pretty good laughs here.

"Powdered Toastman" is a irreverent take on the Superman character. Comprised of a hulk-like body, and some slices of (powdered?) toast for a head, he flies backwards towards various incidents that get radioed to him via his various receivers (one of which is his tongue!).

His methods are hilarious, (just how he saves a kitten from oncoming traffic is very disturbing), and the addition of Frank Zappa for the pope seems oddly appropriate. Oh, and Ren & Stimpy only have a brief cameo, who require the breakfast-"seasoning" services of PTM. Great laughs here in this episode.

Ren and Stimpy and Not Ren and Stimpy

In the Army - 6 or 7

Powdered Toastman - 9 or 10

Overall - 8

Funnily enough, the PT short which doesn't prominently feature R&S is the clear standout here for its absolute Insanity and bizarre inventiveness. The army short just can't compare and feels very lacking in original ideas.

These Episodes definitely cemented Ren & Stimpy as force of wit.

Lighting in a bottle.

This was even before shows like Regular Show, and Adventure time came around.

I'd compare it to something like The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, or Tales from the Crept.

(A-)
