Welcome to the Phantom Zone
claudio_carvalho17 March 2008
Clark is released on the hostile and inhospitable Phantom Zone, attacked by flying ghostly creatures and saved by the former assistant of Jor-el, Raya. She tells that there is a portal where Kal-el can leave the Phantom Zone and Clark believes on her word. Meanwhile, in the chaotic Metropolis, Lionel saves Chloe from the raged crowd, while the city is turning apart due to the powerful Kryptoninan computer virus unleashed by Fine. Martha awakes near the Fortress of Solitude and Kal-el tells her that she must use the dagger he gave to Clark and destroy Lex to save Earth. Lana believes Lex had gone and offers to stab Lex/Zod with the dagger.

The conclusion of the last episode of Season Five is excellent, with all the situations being satisfactorily resolved. The original concept of the Phantom Zone is great, but in my opinion it was very easy to Clark to lure the powerful Zod. Like in other episodes, there are no consequences to the chaos on Earth and no further investigations from the authorities on what might have happened in the planet. My vote is nine.

Greetings from the Phantom Zone

Warning: Spoilers
The Season 6 premiere, 'Zod,' picks up where the Season 5 finale left off, where Brainiac opened up the portal for Zod to enter and take over Lex's body and for Clark to be trapped in the Zone. While there, Clark is attacked by dark, nasty figures who are wraiths of criminals banished to the tundra-like Zone from Kypton by Clark's biological father Jor-El. While there, he meets the woman Raya, who helped Jor-El contruct the Zone and was sent there by Clark's father to preserve her life when the destruction of Krypton occurred. After being given the Crystal of El, which Raya had been holding, which has the power to conquer Zone villains, Clark is able to open the gateway out of the Zone and back to Earth, because he has El blood. However, once back on Earth he needs to stop Zod, who is using Lex's body as his vessel.

The greatest appeal of this episode is the revelation of what the Phantom Zone looks like, an appearance hinted at in the films "Superman" and "Superman II" but not actually seen. Clark's fight with Zod is cool but rather short. This is a good episode, ranking fourth among the six season premieres.

A bit short...well...may be they tried to make it too twisty

Warning: Spoilers
It was a very good episode, but I was not expecting that the ZOD saga will end so soon. I was thinking that they will continue this story to the whole season. They showed ZOD so powerful but still KAl defeated him so easily!!!! Nevertheless, the entry of the phantoms (although I am also a bit confused if it was Zod!!! The scene was too fast) is also very interesting and I hope to see some really good action later. I think this all happened cause they thought of making this episode full of twists and surprises. One more point to be noted was that there are some new and interesting sub plots to the love saga of every character. They showed Lana and Lex still together (??), they also showed Chloe and Clark still friends (??) and they also showed that Lois and Clark are still....well....hmmm....I don't know (and I think they also don't know). That Jimmy 'James' Olson was OK character (Just to remind... I think he is the same guy about whom Chloe once said that she lost her virginity with) but I just don't understand that what is there between him and Chloe, and also between Clark and Chloe. Although I am depressed somewhere about the ZOD saga end, still it was a very good episode and I pretty much enjoyed it.

Zod

I have to admit that when I first saw this episode air in 2006 I was a little disappointed. Seeing it again years later I've come to realize that my original disappointment was a result of having too high expectations after the fantastic season 5. This season 6 premiere is a strong and exciting episode. The fight scene between Clark and the Zod possessed Lex is by far the best part of the episode, and maybe one of the best action scenes ever on Smallville. It's not often that Clark gets a real fight with someone of his strength, so it was a nice change of pace. I do have 2 small complaints that remain today. First off, I've never been a fan of how the Phantom Zone is portrayed. I think the look and feel of a post apocalyptic wasteland is all wrong. I would have rather seen the Phantom Zone as more of a nightmarish place. It would have benefited from being more surreal and frightening of an environment. The other minor complaint unfortunately comes from Rosenbaum's portrayal of Zod. He has some great scenes, but Zod should have been much more over the top.

Overall I only have the minor complaints. While "Zod" is not nearly as strong as some of the other premieres, it's still one of the better offerings in an otherwise weak season 6.
