Has Its Ups and Downs
Hitchcoc18 January 2023
Kind of a mixed bag in this one. A woman of interest and four others die in an explosion. The chief suspect is a young, rather irresponsible man who has diplomatic immunity from Columbia. So as the staff begin to investigate, they are told over and over the guy cannot be prosecuted. So it's full steam ahead regardless. The connection with the State Department is a little person and Booth and Brennan engage in some serious bad taste in making fun of the guy. This is not the way to show compassion. Cam and Booth continue their little affair and by trying to hide it, make it more obvious. Probably the biggest problem with this episode is some of the tactics that would not be tolerated. It is somewhat entertaining.

Hey Bones Booth Pod!
This was a middle of the road episode with some good moments to me. Bones there is a huge difference to being straight forward and just plain rude. Agent Radziwill didn't deserve all that happened in regards to his size this whole episode. Haha Zack and Hodgins with their crazy experiments. The looks on Cam and Booths faces when Hodgins walks up behind them during their hook up conversation was hilarious. Hair sniffing is creepy Hodgins please don't do it. On to a better Hodgins moment the whole scene between him and Booth about him calling in a threat using his conspiracy theories probably made his year. Yes Booth the men in black abduction would be Hodgins dream.

"It's probably offensive."

Warning: Spoilers
This was the worst episode so far. Some remarkably sexist lines and pointed editing and awkward cinematography are doing a bad job at hiding how awful Bones and Booth speak to Danny Woodburn's character Alex Radziwill in multiple scenes. Was this episode written just to make jokes about dwarfism? Perhaps it was also about objectifying women, because as Cam bemoaned the fact her team doesn't go to her for permission for outside information requests, she remarks "Keep me in the loop," and referring to herself AS the loop, adds "I'm the big curvy part." We then cut to a shot of a woman's butt, in a tight skirt.

Bones and Booth rail against the concept of diplomatic immunity in a rabid pursuit of a man they have limited information on, and repeatedly shame a man for doing his job, all while making jokes about his body for... pretty much no reason. Hodgekins and Angela flirt under weird circumstances, and at one point he sniffs her hair. When Bones and Booth get Hodgekins to break the law for them (at great personal and professional risk, but it only comes up again as a joke) to illegally force a family from leaving, we learn that oh! It's okay for them to have done so because apparently the family would die if they went where they were trying to go in the first place. At best, it was a shoddily and lazily written episode playing on the most basic of offensive jokes about people with dwarfism and light but stupid comedy about women. At worst, this episode glorified cops breaking the law, twisting circumstances to force premature conclusions to their cases, and corrupting partner divisions. Booth even remarks that he's aware there's a grander picture when it comes to diplomatic immunity, but still determines that he's done nothing wrong.

Bones encapsulates the entire episode's tone and writing in a scene where Radziwill has to again defend the State Department's role in this case and, after multiple "short people jokes", she remarks, "It's probably offensive." Yeah, probably! A different time, I guess.

Nothing real surprising in this episode

There's not really much to say about this episode. Booth and Bones investigate an explosion in a night club. The reason for murder is pretty simple. Booth enlists Hodgins to do something that's right up his alley. Hodgins continues to drop hints that he wants to date Angela. Angela is giving him a hard time, but it's obvious where she wants this to go.

Booth and Cam are trying to keep their sexual relationship a secret. Oh, I hope this is short-lived (I can't remember exactly how long it happens...). I still think Cam is too demanding - especially when she gets onto Angela for sending Booth the drawing of the skull...

Booth and Brennan work so well together. In the end, Brennan questions Booth's decision but then stands up for him and wonders if can truly trust Cam.

I think Brennan is a bit harsh with the things she said to the agent from the state department...
