Exclusive: Following on from Russell Crowe road-rage thriller Unhinged, filmmaker Derrick Borte is set to direct thriller Black Forest, on which LA-based Film Bridge International is launching world sales.
Written by Borte and Daniel Forte (American Dreamer), the film will alight on a group of university students backpacking through Germany’s famed Black Forest. Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the...

“Bad luck isn’t brought by broken mirrors, but by broken minds”
Th 4k restoration of Dario Argento’s Suspiria screens Midnights this weekend (September 15th and 16th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.
Director Dario Argento redefined horror in 1977 with his masterpiece Suspiria, the Citizen Kane of Italian cinema, a Brother’s Grimm Fairy Tale of outrageously nightmarish proportions. Jessica Harper plays Suzy, an American ballet student, studying at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest of Germany. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento’s breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.I first saw Suspiria...

It’s a given that their Main Slate — the fresh, the recently buzzed-about, the mysterious, the anticipated — will be the New York Film Festival’s primary point of attraction for both media coverage and ticket sales. But while a rather fine lineup is, to these eyes, deserving of such treatment, the festival’s latest Revivals section — i.e. “important works from renowned filmmakers that have been digitally remastered, restored, and preserved with the assistance of generous partners,” per their press release — is in a whole other class, one titanic name after another granted a representation that these particular works have so long lacked.

If anything, Vertigo continues to set the bar when it comes to mature comic book storytelling. Odds are that if you’ve ventured beyond DC’s usual standards, there’s at least something that’s captivated you at some point, be it V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing or Hellblazer. And while some may argue that the imprint’s best days are behind it, one need only open the pages of some of their greatest offerings in recent years such as New Romancer, The Sheriff of Babylon, The Dark & Bloody or Frostbite to prove naysayers wrong.
This year, Savage Things has kept the ball rolling, handily impressing us right out of the gate. The beauty of this particular series is that it can appeal to pretty much anybody who enjoys themselves a gripping thriller. Really, even if...

John Mayer has no fears when it comes to talking about ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. The two famously dated back in 2010 and both released songs about the breakup after they split. Swift's track, "Dear John," included lyrics like "Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong / Don't you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so" ... while his song, "Paper Dolls" contained references to the "22" singer. Though they clearly had a bad break, Mayer had only great things to say about his ex in an interview with MSNBC's Ronan Farrow. When talking about Swift taking on Spotify, Mayer praised her for not allowing her music on there -- saying "I think that's a really cool thing for a musician to do." He then addressed the song he reportedly wrote about Swifty. "All we're talking about is being honest with yourself...

John Mayer isn't afraid to talk about Taylor Swift. The musicians dated briefly in 2010, and it didn't end well. Swift penned the song "Dear John" for her 2010 album Speak Now, and Mayer responded with "Paper Dolls" on his 2013 album Paradise Valley. Rather than ignore his ex's influence on pop culture, however, Mayer gave the singer-songwriter credit during an interview for MSNBC's 7 Days of Genius special. "How's technology changing? When you look at Taylor Swift—I want to talk about Taylor Swift, professionally here!" Ronan Farrow told Mayer, 37. "You have to talk about Taylor Swift!" Mayer said. "We have to be able to talk about Taylor...

With the fate of ABC’s Happy Endings decided, it has officially become a member of the “Gone Too Soon” club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish … or jump the shark. The club used to be headed by the Holy Trinity of Arrested Development/Freaks & Geeks/Firefly, but Arrested Development has been miraculously resurrected, so let’s put … I don’t know … Pushing Daisies in its place.
While we mourn Happy Endings, let’s take a third trip down TV memory lane. In the first Snuffed Out, we paid tribute to the aforementioned Daisies, as well as Wonderfalls, Nightman, The Book Of Daniel, Popular, The Five Mrs. Buchanans, The Flash, Eerie Indiana, It’s All Relative, Paper Dolls and the newly-resurrected Veronica Mars.
The second Snuffed Out honored The Comeback, It Had To Be You, Mission Genesis, Flo, Women of The House, Baywatch Nights,...

Oh Teen Wolf how you tease! Much as we love the show, the denizens of Beacon Hills never quite do all the things we want them to do… or for a sufficient amount of time. Are you a Doctor Who virgin who wants to start watching the Time Lord’s adventures, but is daunted by the fact that the British science-fiction show’s half-century history now encompasses literally dozens of seasons, not to mention 11 small screen Doctors, two ’60s-era films, one TV movie, and numerous specials?
Good news! You don’t have to watch every episode of Doctor Who to know what’s going on. In fact, that’s impossible “thanks” to the BBC’s habit during the ’60s and ’70s of wiping the show’s tapes.
So where should non-Whovian readers start viewing? Well,...

Following roles in in Hawaii Five-0 and Harry's Law, Jean Smart has found a new comedy role, according to Deadline. She's joined the Craig Robinson-centered pilot, which has Robinson playing a musician who becomes a middle school music teacher. Smart will play the stressed out principal of Robinson's school.
Good news, Mr. Feeny will be a part of Boy Meets World follow-up series Girl Meets World as William Daniels will reprise the role. Those of you who thought it would be hard to revisit Cory and Topanga without Mr. Feeny's sage advice, you can let out a sigh of relief.
Whoa. The second season of Baby Daddy doesn't debut for another two months, but ABC Family has already ordered a third season.

Kylie Minogue brought her stripped-bare Anti Tour to London last night, performing a catalogue of B-sides, demos and other relative unknowns to her hardcore fans at Hammersmith.
Some of the songs were obscure even to the pop princess herself, who had to keep a lyric sheet to hand, and even used it as a prop during Give Me Just A Little More Time.
Perhaps she was a little preoccupied, with the announcement earlier in the evening that her sister Dannii had split from her longtime partner Kris Smith.
And the sight in the 5000-strong crowd of Pete Waterman, the man who originally brought her to sing in the UK, and will no doubt be intent on her topping the bill at his Pwl reunion concert at Hyde Park in July.
Kylie came dressed for the part in an eighties-throwback ensemble, studs and all.

DC Comics has announced that they are teaming up with Amazon to bring graphic novels to the new Kindle Fire, the first color e-reader by the internet merchant. The Kindle Fire will boast 100 titles at launch including Watchmen, Superman: Earth One, and Batman: Arkham City, with plans on expanding that library later on.
[The Shakedown]
It’s excellent news that DC is officially launching their graphic novel titles in a digital format, but I can’t imagine why they are limiting themselves to the Kindle Fire, which only boasts a 7 inch screen (hardly an optimal viewing situation for graphic novels.) It seems like a much better idea to release them through ComiXology like their other titles. Releasing them through Kindle hardly limits their reach, but if they are optimized for a 7 inch screen it makes me wonder how they will look on a 10 inch tablet.

While there literally seems to be a film festival on every corner, I am hearing of more and more each day. Even in my own back yard of New York City, little did I know that I would be attending the 9th annual film festival in the quaint sea side town of Coney Island. Yes, on every corner of the world. While my boyfriend was at that very moment up in Calgary at their International Film Fest in Canada, I was at one of the best horror short line ups in the world that night. See what I mean by every corner of the world? Not to mention the Sitges International going on right now in Spain and who knows how many other festivals are happening as I write. I think one can make a tour out of it. But the Coney Island Film Festival was special in so many ways.

Berlin -- Richard Loncraine's "My One and Only," a '50s-era comedy starring Renee Zellweger and Kevin Bacon, was squeezed into the competition lineup for this year's Berlin International Film Festival, barely a week before the event kicks off.
Zellweger plays a glamorous single mom on the hunt for a rich man to foot the bill for her and her sons' lifestyle. Produced by Merv Griffith Entertainment and Ray Gun Prods., "My One and Only" will have its world premiere in Berlin. Essential Entertainment is handling international sales.
Berlin also added Lone Scherfig's Sundance favorite "An Education" with Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina and Emma Thompson and Davis Guggenheim's music documentary "It Might Get Loud" for its Berlinale Special Galas, ensuring the films will get the red carpet treatment without any of the pressure of competition.
