This is supposedly the only episode of the series where Publick or Hammer did not take the lead in the writer's room, and it shows. "Viva Los Muertos" takes on a much more sinister tone in an otherwise relatively lighthearted series. This is not to say The Venture Bros doesn't often rely on grotesque humor, especially in these earlier shows. But the satirical "Mystery Gang" and their real life serial killer counterparts strikes a nerve not often activated by other Venture Bros episodes. Darkness exudes throughout the entirety of the episode. This episode is more violent, disturbing, and much creepier than your typical Venture Bros fare. And I think the tonal distinctness can be attributed to Ben Edlund's lead.
