The world may be upside down, but the Hugo Awards are forever! The Hugos are the longest-running fan-voted awards in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, first bring presented in 1953. The awards are generally given out during the World Science Fiction Convention, which is in a different host city every year. Sadly, the 78th Worldcon, aka CoNZealand, set to take place in (you guessed it) New Zealand, will have to be virtual this year. The Hugo ceremony will therefore also take place online.
Today, CoNZealand announced the finalists for this year’s Hugos, voted on by 1,584 people, who submitted 27,033 nominations. Those who were members of last year’s Worldcon, An Irish Worldcon, and members of this year’s Worldcon, CoNZealand, were eligible to vote, however, only CoNZealand members will be able to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners. You can still purchase a Supporting Membership on...

"I cannot stress enough the importance of this mission. Good luck, stay sharp." Shout Factory has released an official Us trailer for a British bomber "war epic" titled Lancaster Skies, which originally opened in the UK in spring last year. A loving homage to the classic British war films of the 1940s and '50s, Lancaster Skies soars in its depiction of the legendary bomber crews who fought for our freedom. The storyline follows Douglas, a broken, solitary Spitfire Ace, who must overcome his past to lead a Lancaster bomber crew in the pivotal aerial war over Berlin, in 1944. The film stars Kris Saddler, Rosa Coduri, David Dobson, Josh Collings, Joanne Gale, and Jeffrey Mundell. This looks a bit too jingoistic for my tastes - doesn't seem like there's much of a story here other than "it's rough flying a bomber during a war!" Which is, indeed, true. Here's the...

Reema Kagti’s Talaash bears certain similarities with 2007 Macedonian film Shadows
**this article contains spoilers**
The recently released Talaash directed by Reema Kagti, starring Aamir Kahan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor will long be remembered as a good movie where glamorous superstars of our time are seen playing convincing character roles. Apart from its refreshing theme of presenting crime from an unorthodox angle, Talaash is a movie that explores a fresh treatment of the supernatural genre. Though both the writers–Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar– have said that Talaash was based on a real-life incident that took place near Haji Ali Road in Mumbai; it is interesting to note that the film bears certain similarities with a 2007 Macedonian film Shadows (Macedonian: Сенки, Transliteration: Senki) directed, produced and written by Milčo Mančevski.

Composer Ryan Shore is one of the rising stars of the film music world. Thanks to his collaborations with MovieScoreMedia, more and more of his scores are now available to the public. Headspace, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and the Macedonian movie Senki (Shadows) are just a number of titles available from their catalogue. In the summer, Msm released a three-way collection of jazzy scores from Ryan's career: Numb, Kettle of Fish and Coney Island Baby are just pure fun to listen to. Now a new collection is available, collecting together a wide range of short film scores from Ryan's earlier days. The award winning animated shorts include the much-requested Rex Steele: Nazi Smasher, the Claymation short Shadowplay and the dark comedy Cadaverous. What connects together these scores apart from being written by the same composer is that you'd never think they were written for short films - they could underscore...

Borce Nacev And Vesna Stanojevska In Director Milcho Manchevski's Shadows. Courtesy Mitropoulos Films.
Writer-director Milcho Manchevski has only made three features over the course of his 15-year film career, yet the multi-talented Macedonian rarely allows himself a moment to catch his breath. Born in 1959 in the Macedonian capital of Skopje, Manchevski studied History of Art and Archeology at his hometown university before going to film school at Southern Illinois University on a scholarship. Following his graduation, he relocated to New York and began making commercials, music videos, documentaries, shorts and experimental films. In 1992, he won several major awards for his video for Arrested Development's “Tennessee,” which is...

Shadows - Macedonia's Oscar submission in 2007 (also known as Senki) finally sees limited release. It's from the director of Before the Rain and stars Borce Nacev (pictured right) as a physician who mysteriously survives an accident. His mother is apparently a Lady Macbeth type.
Medicine for the Melancholy -an indie about African American 20somethings in San Francisco.
The Class this absolute must see from France reopens now that it's Oscar nominated. I'm sure my own awards had something to do with that release decision, too [snort]. The Class (also known as Entre Les Murs) won the Palme D'Or last summer and hopefully, it can win the golden boy too. I'm not exactly predicting it, though. It might be too subtle and contemporary for standard awards glory.
