- Female crew members must take over the Enterprise when the men are incapacitated by a race of sirens.
- A mysterious signal from an unexplored planet mesmerizes the male crewmen of the Enterprise into daydreaming of fantasy women. Female crewmen remain unaffected. Following the signal, Kirk beams down with an all-male landing party and is quickly subdued. Awakening, they find themselves wearing headbands that siphon off their life force, making them age quickly, bestowing long life and beauty upon the all-female residents of the planet. The weakened landing party manages to escape and hide from their captors in a hollow outdoor sculpture. Meanwhile, Uhura, seeing the men become completely useless and constant daydreamers, takes command of the Enterprise. She assembles another landing party (all-female) to rescue the first. They win a battle over the female inhabitants, who, willing to release Kirk and his party, don't know where they are. Using a locater device, they see that the men are about to drown in the sculpture, which is filling with water from a rainstorm. Uhura's party runs out to the courtyard and blasts the sculpture, freeing the men. Using the transporter in a tricky way, the men's life force is restored, returning them to their handsome, viral selves.—Tony-B4
- A mysterious signal from an unexplored region of space (where a number of federation vessels have disappeared over the last 150 yrs, and thus the Enterprise is sent in to investigate. Investigation with Klingons and Romulans indicate that a star ship has disappeared in the vicinity of the region every 27.346 yrs. They are approaching the next event horizon in the next few minutes) mesmerizes the male crewmen of the Enterprise into daydreaming of fantasy women (Spock sees a Vulcan beauty playing the marriage drum. Kirk sees a pretty girl with flowers. McCoy sees Magnolias in blossom). The signal is coming from a Taurean star system 20 light yrs away. Female crewmen remain unaffected. Kirk orders the Enterprise into orbit around the planet. But Uhura notes that her readings from the sensors don't match those of Spock's. Spock says that sensors indicate a sprawling civilization on the planet once upon a time.
Following the signal, Kirk beams down with an all-male landing party and is quickly subdued by a group of females led by Theela (Majel Barrett). The females can control objects through their voice and have an advanced device called Opto-Aud that helps them see anything they ask. Awakening, they find themselves wearing headbands that siphon off their life force, making them age quickly, bestowing long life and beauty upon the all-female residents of the planet. The weakened landing party manages to escape and hide from their captors in a hollow outdoor sculpture. Spock reckons that the headbands glow in presence of the women and stops in their absence. He thinks the headbands are some sort of polarized conductors that are transferring their life force to the women and keeping them young, and in exchange, the men are aging 10 yrs for each passing day (they will be dead within 4 days). As the men lose their strength, the women have become more energetic and vital.
Meanwhile, Uhura, seeing the men become completely useless and constant daydreamers (she also runs independent tests on the computers and surmises that constant exposure to the planet is detrimental to the males to the point of resulting in their death), takes command of the Enterprise. She assembles another landing party (all-female) to rescue the first (after she receives a message from Spock, who had infiltrated their temple to steal his communicator back. He located the communicator using the Opto-Aud). Uhura and her landing party win a battle over the female inhabitants, who are willing to release Kirk and his party, but they don't know where they are. Spock speaks to Uhura telepathically and guides them to his location.
The women share the past with Uhura. The planet drains the energy from bio-logical beings. The women learned to their glands to manipulate the men and use energy from men to revitalize themselves. Eventually all men died. Since then, the women have had to revitalize themselves every 27.3 yrs. The women don't age or die, and are unable to bear children. Using the Opto-Aud, they see that the men are about to drown in the sculpture, which is filling with water from a rainstorm. Uhura's party runs out to the courtyard and blasts the sculpture, freeing the men.
Using the transporter in a tricky way (The transporters have the recordings of their original molecular patterns before they were beamed down to the surface of the planet, so Spock suggests that they energize and then be brought together using the original patterns), the men's life force is restored, returning them to their handsome, viral selves. The woman of the planet are relocated to a different planet, with a normal society to be allowed to age gracefully..
