The series was the only production of Beverly Hills Studios, and largely tried to follow the formula of the older series "Crusader Rabbit". However it never caught on with the audience.
According to various sources, such as the "Television Cartoon Shows: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, 1949 Through 2003",the series was always negatively compared to its contemporary "The Huckleberry Hound Show" which featured better production values and better scripts. "Spunky and Tadpole" was seen as amateurish and "offered at bargain rates to less affluent stations in smaller markets".
