- Enterprise is in orbit around the Planet of the Time Vortex. Focus of all the time-lines of our galaxy. They are assisting a team of historians in the investigation of federation history. Spock, McCoy and Kirk had gone through the Guardian of Forever. Upon his return from a journey through the Guardian of Forever (a time portal on a specific planet in the Galaxy) Kirk realizes that history has been altered and no one remembers Spock. Only Kirk can remember Spock.
An Andorian Thelin is now his First Officer (and has been for 5 yrs now) and it appears that Spock met an untimely death during a childhood ritual on Vulcan (the survival test for young Vulcan males). This is noted in the Starfleet records of Ambassador Sarek, who is Spock's father. His mother separated from his father after Spock's death, and later died herself in a shuttle accident. Spock recalls that his cousin Selek had saved his life that day in the desert by protecting him from a wild animal. Kirk surmises that it was Spock who had saved himself that day, but this time he was in the Orion's past when historians had the time vortex replay Vulcan history. Spock couldn't be in 2 places at once.
Spock must use the Guardian again and return to the Vulcan of his youth and restore his time line, but no other major factor should be changed. Spock enters the Guardian and reaches the outskirts of his home city of Shirkhar. He witnesses himself being bullied by other Vulcans as a kid for being from Earth and for his father being married to a human. He is met by his father Sarek and mom Amanda (Majel Barrett) & introduces himself as his cousin Selek, who is on a journey to all family shrines to honor the family Gods.
Sarek talks to young Spock on how he must decide whether to be a Vulcan or a Human, and then stick to that path. Sarek says that the Vulcan path has no place for emotions. But once the path is chosen, Spock cannot turn back. Young Spock's test of maturity is next month, when he will have to survive for 10 days in the desert without food, water or weapons. If Young Spock fails, he will be called a coward for life. Spock is confused as he remembers to have saved Young Spock's life during the test of maturity. But that's not till next month.
Young Spock is worried about being fit for his father's exacting standards and decides to leave home that night to test himself whether he can withstand the ordeals. Spock follows him. High in the mountains, Young Spock is attacked by a Vulcan wild animal and Spock saves Young Spock, using the Vulcan nerve pinch. In the battle, young Spock's pet Sehlat I-Chaya is wounded by the wild animal Le-Matya and is stuck by its poisonous claws. As I-Chaya dies, Spock guides young Spock through logic and asks him to fetch a healer. Young Spock crosses the desert to get one. But the healer says that it is too late and he can only prolong the life of the pet and not save it.
Spock consoles young Spock and says that a Vulcan mourns the passing of life only if it is wasted. Every life eventually results in death. Young Spock understands and requests the healer to release the pet from its agony. Young Spock returns home and chooses the Vulcan way of life. Spock returns to his own time and fears that the death of the pet might bring unforeseen changes to the future
