At the emotional turning point in the church when Bettina accepts the Father's offer of help, she has him re-baptize her. Re-baptism is not permitted in the Catholic Church as it is unnecessary and would actually be a sacrilege as it calls into question the original validity of the baptism. The Church teaches that Baptism is a once-for-all sacrament that washes away original sin, gives sanctifying grace, and imparts a supernatural character upon the soul that makes a person a Christian. During the recitation of the creed at Mass we even say we "acknowledge ONE baptism for the forgiveness of sin..."
