Of course.... I'm watching The Prisoner of Zenda, in Doctor who?? I can understand an homage being paid to what went on during the Hinchcliffe years, but Zenda? what next homage to Carry on Doctor?
Only here our Prisoner (Ronald Colman)is in the guise of our equally stiff upper lipped Prince Reynart (Neville Jason) it's not long before we realise that it's slightly more then an homage, each character is virtually here from Zenda.
We pick up with all drugged, and Prince Reynart kidnapped by Grendal, The Doctor hatches a plan. We learn Grendal's real purpose for kidnapping Romana and are introduced to Princess Strella. The crowning of a new king is imminent, but who will it be?
K-9 seems to have become the magic wand that the Sonic screwdriver is in modern day Who, summoned and able to put things right, I don't mind as I enjoy K-9's witty banter.
There is a swashbuckling charm to it, it's a fun production, but it's not really playing out like a Doctor Who, there's not really any urgency to it of any kind, dare I say it's padded.
I am enjoying Neville Jason's performance, it's hard not to watch without smirking.
Madam Lamia is also an interesting character, emotionless, malevolent and curious, she's like something plucked from a Dracula movie.
It's quite a bizarre episode, with a very bizarre ending, but somehow it's quite endearing. 7/10, not Doctor Who, but swashbuckling good fun.
