Not dominating any favourite story lists! This is a slightly disappointing start to Season 6

Review of all 5 episodes:

This adventure has The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arriving on a planet The Doctor has apparently visited before. The peaceful civilisation he knew is revealed to have had war in the past but is a pacifist society. They are attacked by two 'Dominators', from another world with their robotic henchmen 'Quarks' who intend to enslave those they consider worthy.

Unfortunately this is generally a below average adventure. The script by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln is pretty good and interesting but has not been executed well on screen. The writers actually withdrew their names from the production (releasing it under a pseudonym of Norman Ashby) and stopped working on the series altogether after the production team changed the story from a 6-parter to a 5-parter without consulting them and got Derrick Sherwin to write a new concluding fifth episode. This is very sad as their previous work on the series was tremendous. I do not feel this was ever anywhere near the standards of their earlier stories and did not need 6 parts but I think the script itself is better than the production makes it appear. The story's ideas are not bad but perhaps the production problems spoiled the end product a bit.

The acting of the guest cast is mostly OK but the direction is flat and the production is not well executed overall with terrible costumes, unimpressive sets etc looking too cheap and cobbled together, including the rather silly Quark robots.

Some decent standards are still in evidence in aspects of the story and the performances of regular cast Troughton, Hines and Padbury are very good but this adventure is a little bit dull and not as well produced as it should be at all. It is below what you want to kick off season 6, especially after such a great season 5.

My Ratings: Episodes 1, 2, & 5 - 6.5/10, Episodes 3 & 4 - 6/10, Overall - 6.3/10

Warning: Spoilers
Doctor Who: The Dominators: Episode 3 (although oddly there's no 'Episode 3' caption at the beginning despite an otherwise normal title sequence) starts as Zoe (Wendy Padbury) & Cully (Arthur Cox) are captured by Toba (Kenneth Ives) & taken prisoner along with Balan (Johnson Bayly) & his students to be used as slaves of the Dominators. Meanwhile the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) & Jamie (Frazer Hines) try to convince Senex (Walter Fitzgerald) & the pacifist Dulcian council to act on his advice but they refuse to enter into any sort of war or aggression with the Dominators, the Doctor & Jamie realise they are on their own & set off for the island themselves to rescue the enslaved Zoe & Dulcians...

Episode 3 from season 6 this Doctor Who adventure originally aired here in the UK during August 1968, directed by Morris Barry one has to say that The Dominators is one of the dullest Doctor Who stories I've ever seen although I admit I haven't seen every one. The script credited to the pseudonym of Norman Ashby after disputes between the original writers & script editor Derrick Sherwin has been so drawn out & padded it's untrue, the basic idea of a pacifist society coming up against an aggressive one is simple in itself & hasn't been developed any further than that brief synopsis. Imagine three whole Doctor Who episodes at just under 25 minutes each to tell what I managed to write in less than ten words & you'll have some idea of why The Dominators is considered a pretty poor story by the majority of people who have seen it. This episode sees the Doctor & Jamie mess around in a silly looking flying craft & Zoe held captive by the Dominators so she can shift some rocks, seriously that's all there is to this episode. The constant bickering between the two Dominators Rago & Toba is becoming increasingly annoying, basically Toba disagrees with everything Rago does & that's about it for character development! Even at just over 24 minutes in length this is pretty dull stuff.

Like a lot of Doctor Who episodes there are some truly embarrassing production goofs, here for some reason Zoe can't seen to keep the zip on the back of her dress done up. Right after the opening sequence finishes & she & Cully are trying to open the door of the building they are trapped in you can clearly see Zoe's zip at the back of her curtain dress is undone & there's a huge gaping hole where you can see her bare back! Compare it with the next shot where they actually manage to open the door & it's done up again. However if you look at the scene later on when Balan collapses & Zoe goes over to help him it's clearly undone again, it's odd because none of the other women have any problems with their zips. The squeaky female Quark robotic voices are still difficult to understand. In essence the makers have used the same unimaginative cliffhanger ending for every episode so far in that each one has the Quark's about to kill either the Doctor,Jamie or Zoe.

The Dominators: Episode 3 is maybe even worse than the previous two since even less happens & the story has stagnated & come to a grinding halt. I can't remember a Doctor Who story where after three episodes so little has actually happened.

Excruciating.

After a promising start, the downward spiral is alarming, The Dominators is without doubt one of Troughton's worst stories, such a shame his final season began with this.

The story continues to be dull, the characters in general are utterly devoid of any interest, but it's the pacing that remains the biggest problem, it is just so insanely boring.

Why are the Dominators making The Dulcians move rocks about, it just makes no sense, and why are there so many middle aged men sitting around in a lounge area? Talk about casual. Why was The Doctor allowed to wander?

I'm not a fan. 4/10
