Al does the right thing for a change!
Sylviastel18 May 2009
Steve Rhodes agrees to drive Al home after work. Al gets to visit the bank where he works after hours. As Steve says "Some people think of a Hawaiian sunset as heaven but I prefer a bank after hours." While he is getting ready to pack up, Al stops by the vault. They play card games. When something turns up missing at the bank, Steve suspects Al who keeps claiming that he didn't rob the bank much to the dismay of his family. When he finally gives in, the family comes up with their wish lists of things to buy with the money. Of course, the Bundys can never get rich because it would ruin the show's premise anyway. Steve worries about his job and his life if he goes to prison.

It's all about the Benjamins.

Steve gets a promotion at the bank, which means he's earning much more than before; Al, on the other hand, is still earning minimum wage at the shoe store, to the continual disappointment of his wife and children.

When Al visits Steve at the bank after hours, the two men enter the vault and are tempted to run off to Canada with the money; instead, they play poker with the cash, leaving the money behind when they go.

Later, Steve discovers that $1million is missing from the bank and accuses Al of stealing it. Peggy and the kids are delighted, but Al maintains that he doesn't have the money.

There are a couple of funny lines along the way (Al's comment about 'hookers dressed like college girls' is a good 'un), but this is far from the funniest episode of MWC, the script lacking that keen acerbic wit that the show is famous for. If I Were A Rich Man feels like a filler episode -- so far Season 3 has been fairly weak, but I'm sure there's much better to come...
