At approximately 1:36, Claire and Hilly are decorating the Christmas tree with a popcorn string. Several minutes later while Claire is packing her suitcase she looks out the window to see Tom and Hilly carrying the Christmas tree towards the house.
They are stuck at Grandma's house as the road to Aspen is blocked by very heavy snowfall and the cleaning of the roads take longer than expected. However when they go there the next day, there is hardly any snow anywhere when they reach the house in Aspen.
Ford pickup trucks of this vintage used in the movie were delivered with mechanical bottle jacks that go under the axle, not a bumper jack as depicted (and erroneously used) in the tire-changing scene.
When Tom is changing the tire on the late 1970s Ford pickup, a bumper jack can plainly be seen against the side of the bed. This type of jack was designed to be used on the bumper, not the side of the vehicle. Using the jack on the side like he did would only bend the sheet metal on the side of the box, it would not lift the tire off the ground.
In the middle of Omaha, a Canada Post van is parked behind Tom's truck.
Just after Tom backs his truck into the ditch, as he and Claire are arguing about it on the side of the road, an red emergency vehicle with flashing light can be seen far down to the road blocking any traffic that might come by during the shoot.
The trip from Ogalala, Nebraska to Denver, Colorado takes three hours and is best traveled via interstate. This trip would barely last a bathroom break let alone the four meals, overnight stay, and many back roads this one takes, even allowing for a side trip to a museum.
The movie takes place across the northern United States. When Claire Jameson (Jennifer Grey) arrives in Lincoln to find a bus transfer it is raining and she complains that her hair will be ruined. A stranger offers her a plastic bag to hold over her hair. The bag is from Dollarama, a Canadian corporation that has no stores in America.
Ogallala, Nebraska is in the Great Plains. The topography is different and it is much less forested than where the movie is actually filmed.
The characters are on a road trip across the northern states, particularly Colorado. While driving along a single-lane country road, the viewer sees a road sign indicating MAXIMUM 60. This is unrealistic in the U.S. where the speed limit is expressed in mile/hour. This is a Canadian road with speed expressed in kilometres/hour, with 60 km/hr equivalent to about 36 mph.
