Lou's marriage
JordanThomasHall12 August 2019
In the boarding house, Bud runs into an old friend from show business, Maxine (Adele Jergens). She's hoping to find a part while her husband is away performing in England. Lou receives a letter in the mail from Edna, a Lonely Hearts correspondent that he hopes to marry despite never seeing her. Bud discourages the idea and says Lou shouldn't use his own handwriting to respond, so they go to a public stenographer (Kathryn Sheldon). Bud prevents Lou from sending Edna $35 to take a bus to come there. Lou tries to sell his car at a used car lot for $35, but the salesman (Charles Cane) destroys it showing how bad the vehicle is. With deductions for damages and sales tax, Lou is given a nickel. Lou walks past a gambling raid and a policeman (Jack Mulhall) mistakes Lou for a defiant criminal and hits him over the head. Mike the Cop takes an unconscious Lou back to his apartment where he is evaluated by a doctor (Milt Bronson). He checks out okay, but Bud talks Maxine into 'gas lighting' Lou over his marriage plans. When Lou wakes up, Maxine pretends to be Edna and already married to one another. The unkempt grouch bosses him around. A miserable Lou fears Edna is going to shoot him. Mr. Fields works Lou over in establishing divorce proceedings with "Edna". Complications ensue when Maxine's husband George (Paul Bryar) returns.
