New Management
Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the dancefloor.
With the sudden death of Leonard Rossiter. Tripper's Day ended. It was no great loss as the critics savaged the show.
However I reckon Bruce Forsyth who was signed for ITV at the time must have gone on the phone with the ITV bosses. Bruce must have persuaded them that if they wanted him to stick around with them, they needed to give him a sitcom.
Hence Slinger's Day. The same supermarket but new manager. The same lazy writing and stereotypes. This must had been one of Ricky Gervais's inspirations for his sitcom within the show in Extras.
The first episode starts off with the old chestnut of mistaken identity, as the checkout girl listening to music thinks the salesman is the new manager. The stranger she let in to the store and never asked what he wanted.
There are no characters here. They are just caricatures found in lots of other sitcoms.
Bruce Forsyth uses all his experience to try to make it work, but he is let down by the writing.
