Nice zombies' parody
mario_c26 February 2008
It's an entertaining and enjoyable satire to western and zombies' movies, both. The plot is quite simple and it's about a small town, in the Old West, which was infected by a zombie plague (originated by a curse of JERONIMO - the Indian legend who died by U.S. army's hands – to the white people). As it spreads, two outlaw "amigos" try to run away from the evil sheriff and his men, which have become zombies too.

The movie is funny and have plenty of traditional jokes related to zombies' parodies, but also a novelty: a new scenario to a zombies' film! At least I don't remember to watch any other zombies' flick in the Old West!

Another in a Recent String of Zombie Comedies
gavin694226 December 2007
Two men, forced to be partners due to an unusual set of circumstances (involving a sheriff and a prostitute), get captured by the niece of Geronimo, but end up on her side when the sheriff and his men acquire Geronimo's curse (making them a zombie-like creature). The men are now on the run, hoping to find either an escape or a cure.

One cannot comment on this film without comparing it to other zombie comedies. The closest is probably "The Quick and the Undead", which I haven't seen. The modern classic is "Shaun of the Dead", which may never be surpassed -- it certainly wasn't by this film. Another entry is "Dead and Deader", which doesn't seem to be popular amongst fans but I have to say is on par with this one -- DAD is heavier on the references (which I like) and UOA is heavier on the slapstick comedy. So, that might help you make your choice if you are going to watch one or the other.

The other deciding factor has to be Chris Kattan. He's less flamboyant here than usual ("Night at the Roxbury") but is still Kattan. If you have some sort of aversion to him, you may want to avoid this film. The other actors are all quite good, although I found it very difficult to believe that Geronimo's niece had any Native American blood in her. But I won't fault her for that.

The gore is decent. Early on the effects are cheesy, but they seem to get better as they go, or I just notice the poor quality less. Not sure which, but you'll get a good share of blood. The nudity, unfortunately, is limited almost entirely to the male bottom. I may be a regular subscriber to "Buns and Ammo" but sometimes I like to see women, too, which this film can't offer.

This film was an impulse rent (it was this or "Day Watch") and I don't regret it. Sure, the plot and acting and everything else is cheesy. But, this film served it's purpose: a light-hearted gore-splattered zombie comedy to watch with friends while drinking the cheapest beer known to man (Mountain Creek). Good times. I highly recommend you repeat the experience.

Zombies and cowboys...
paul_haakonsen19 November 2010
This zombie comedy was actually quite nice. It had potential to go somewhere near "Shaun of the Dead", but there was just something missing to make it go that extra mile.

Now, the story is pretty straight forward and easy to follow. The curse of Geronimo had been inflicted upon the white people, and they are now turning up as flesh-hungry zombies. And you have people running away from an ever-growing posse of zombies. There, enough said about the story.

The setting of "Undead or Alive" is actually a good take on the zombie genre. Nice to see a zombie movie set in the old west. And the scenery, staging, costumes and such was very nice to look at and had a good deal of detail to it. And the zombies were actually nice to look at as well, though I am not too fond of the movies where they put zombie make-up on the face, and then leave the neck bared so you can see pink, non-decaying skin there. That is just too cheesy.

The acting in the movie was alright as well, though at times cheesy and you were kind of sitting wondering to yourself about the dialogue. But all in all, it was an average experience. James Denton, as Elmer Winslow, was actually doing a really nice job in the movie. And Chris Kattan, as the funny sidekick Luke Rudd, brought along a good portion of humor to the movie. However, Navi Rawat (playing Sue) actually carried the movie - and not just because she is an attractive woman. But she was the one who carried the heaviest load of acting in the movie, and she made the movie work.

The movie is a welcomed addition to the zombie genre, though it is not the type of movie that really has enough weight in it for additional viewings. Once you've seen it, I doubt you will be going back to it again. The movie had the potential to be an instant 'classic' like "Shaun of the Dead", but there was a crucial ingredient missing from the movie. I can't say what it was, but something was missing.

One thing that didn't work for me at all in this movie was the use of the "F"-word. It was used a couple of times throughout the movie, and that really didn't go well with me. Now, I am not narrow-minded or sensitive about such, I just don't think that word was being used back in the 1860s or thereabouts?! And that took away some of the enjoyment for my part.

In overall, "Undead or Alive" is good for an evening worth of zombies and comedy.

Silly & mindless, but watchable
Shattered_Wake15 June 2009
Synopsis: Army deserter Elmer Winslow (James Denton) and loser cowboy Luke Budd (Chris Kattan) flee town after robbing the evil Sheriff Claypool (Matt Besser). With the Sheriff's posse hot on their trail, Elmer and Luke (oddly) join up with Sue (Navi Rawat), the hot niece of Geronimo with the promise that they'll show her the way to the nearest Army Outpost. Sue wants to take vengeance upon those (the entire Army, apparently) who wronged her people and killed her uncle. Unfortunately for our small band of misfits. . . everyone in the area has turned into ravenous zombies.

Review: Since I went in thinking this was a real zombie western, I was surprised (and annoyed) to find a cheesy comedy. Or, 'Western Zombedy' as the director called it. Breaking down the 'horror-comedy' of the film. . . there's very little horror. Sure, there's a bit of gore and zombie violence, but most of it is done out of humour and, even still, not funny. The attempted comedy does get a couple laughs, mostly from Chris Kattan and his usual idiot behaviour and Brian Posehn as the first zombie. On the positive side, the soundtrack is pretty good. Not good, just pretty good. There were a couple tunes in there I'll actually seek out. . . but, the music doesn't make up for a badly acted, written, and directed film with a strange habit of forgetting exactly what time period they're in (which is one of the worst things a film can do for me). Overall, if you're willing to waste an hour and a half on some mindless crap and you have nothing at all else to watch, give it a look. . . but it's not worth much.

Final Rating: 4/10

Undead won't be coming back to life...
adamdonaghey29 April 2007
The worst thing about Undead or Alive: A Zombedy is not necessarily the film itself--and it's bad--but all the interviews and marketing plugs I've read or seen with the director, Glasgow Phillips. He continually plugs the film by saying things like "If you're not sold at 'Zombie Western,' then I don't think you're one of our customers" (from an eFilmCritic interview). That's basically a cutesy way of saying the film has nothing of value other than the fact that it happens to be an amalgam of two genres of film.

The wannabe campy slasher film reminds me more of a drunken high school attempt at slurred comedy and oozing gore than an actual feature film of any substance (and b-movies have some sort of substance!). The plot's typical of any zombie film--and that's not necessarily a bad thing. But the delivery is what's really lacking. Chris Kattan (Saturday Night Live) and James Denton (Desperate Housewives) play washed-out characters who don't take their situation, or each other, seriously. The entire film is reminiscent of a bad comedian laughing at his own bad jokes.

After the film, during the Q&A session (SXSW), someone described the film as Blazing Saddles meets Shaun of the Dead. But Blazing Saddles was funny and Shaun of the Dead was decent camp. This film is neither.

'should've left you two to the curse'.......
FlashCallahan22 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Army deserter Elmer Winslow and local cowboy Luke Budd are on the run after robbing the evil Sheriff Claypool, stealing his money and fleeing the town, they find themselves with an angry posse on their trail.

Joining Elmer and Luke is an Apache warrior, who's out to wreak vengeance on behalf of her decimated people; her plan is to attack the U.S. Army wherever she can find it, and she takes Elmer up on his offer to go with her to the nearest Army outpost he knows.

Their plans become complicated when they discover that, as a result of the great Apache Geronimo's curse on the white man, all the people of the surrounding areas have turned into zombies.

While watching the opening credits for the film 'A Zombedy' pops up into the title segment, informing viewers that this will be a comedy.

As soon as i saw that, i knew this was going to be a stinker. I just didn't know how much of a stinker it was going to be.

The story is dire, the performances are not too bad, but given the material they have been given to use, they look embarrassed, and come the end of the film, it all feels like 'Ghosts of Mars'.

They have tried to make it seem original by setting it in the Wild West, but it's all too obvious they are trying to cash in on 'Shaun of the Dead'.

More yawn of the dead.

Mango Goes West.
madrobotstudios6 April 2008
I've seen bad films, and I mean BAD films. I fully expected this movie to suck like an event horizon, but... It really wasn't as bad as all that.

It's a zombie flick, set out west with supernatural zombies. Geronimo puts a curse on the white man, and when they're bitten by the undead, they too become zombified.

The acting is good in this, nobody's phoning it in, and the only thing that was kind of iffy on this thing was the story itself. Had they played this as either serious, or as a straight comedy, it would have been good. I think they were trying for a balance of both, but that's the only thing that kind of suffers. Chris Kattan is a funny guy, and has some good lines in this, as well as James Denton, and the female lead. There are some plot holes that are small, but when you pare it all away, it's still better than Diary Of The Dead, and well worth a rental.

Felt like an idea conceived at a fraternity reunion booze-fest, carried out the next afternoon with hangovers and regrets.
h_tl15 March 2007
It wasn't very good. The cinematography, story line, makeup, costumes, and gross-out factor were okay for a cowboy/zombie/comedy movie. The horses and scenery were filmed well. The concept should have been acceptable to build a comedy around, but the attempt failed. The story line includes saloon girls, the town priest, the sheriff, graveyards, and various and sundry shots of zombie slaughtering. Nevertheless, the script, direction, and acting were poor. Actually, Leslie Jordan was okay and James Denton was not too awful, but Chris Kattan (of Saturday Night Live) and Navi Rawat are really, really poor. No one seemed to realize that for this kind of film to work the characters must take themselves and each other seriously. Perhaps the makers envisioned something like "Blazing Saddles" with zombies, but it just didn't work out. It felt like an idea conceived at a fraternity reunion booze-fest, and carried out the next afternoon with hangovers and regrets. Even for the hardened zombie fans, this one is hardly worth a visit.

I liked it...It was typically good.
ShawnjStoker5 May 2008
I liked this movie. I say it was typically good because it satisfied any expectations I had. I don't get the bad reviews posted. It says in the beginning it's a "Zombedy" and it stars Chris Kattan...and Brian Posehn is in it too. I really don't need to say anything else after that. That's like a "get out of jail free" card. Instead it's a "if you take yourself too seriously and try to seriously critique this type of film, you're a fool" card. I've never seen a "Zombie" movie that didn't have some camp or dark humor. This is obviously more the traditional camp, but if you can't find the little things funny then you'll probably need to go out a get a new sense of humor. You're taking yourself too seriously, especially when it comes to reviewing a "Zombie Western". See it kids! It's definitely worth watching.

Not even Zombies would find this funny...
JoeB13113 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
YOu see, you'd have to be a brain-dead Zombie to find this "Zombedy" funny. Normal living people would call it misogynistic, racist, unfunny garbage.

This is why Saturday Night Live needs to be terminated with extreme prejudice! It keeps inflicting unfunny 'comedians' like Chris Kataan on us, who feel the need to make unfunny movies.

The plot, if you want to call it that, is that Geronimo put a curse on the White Man to turn people into zombies. When you start out your supposed "Comedy" with a woman and child being eaten by a Zombie, you know the whole thing is going to go down hill.

The film stars Kataan as a Dude Cowboy who gives his horse and weapons effeminate names, who meets up with an Army deserter, and they both end up escaping from jail being pursued by a zombified posse. They meet up with Geronimo's niece, who tells them the only way to cure the Zombie curse is to eat the flesh of the medicine man who created it. So, of course, at the end of the movie, they eat her. The last scene is a discussion about how good she tasted. Disgusting.

Interspersed are scenes with a Padre trapped in a town full of Zombies, being forced to drink from a spittoon before the Zombies kill him. Did someone really think that scene was funny? It added nothing to the plot, as the town-zombies were completely forgotten about afterwards.

This film is trash. Don't see it.

Gotta love Western Zombies! Warning: Spoilers
"Undead or Alive" is one of my all time new favorite movies. It is full of old school slapstick humor that any Three Stooges fan would appreciate. Not only is the story interesting and upbeat, but it is fun. The cast is great and there are familiar faces from other B movies classics. If you love B movies then this one will become an instant classic! Chris Kattan is still in my mind one of the funniest member of Saturday night live and will always be equal to Will Ferrell in my eyes. It is sad that the Duo does not perform together anymore. But as they say you can't mend broken hearts. There is plenty of old fashioned effects and plenty of blood and guts to go around. Along with Kattan Matt Besser would be next on my list as funny comedians. Hid role in this movie is a twisted town sheriff who steals from travelers passing through his town, only 1000 dollars away from "Retiring" to Mexico to become a sugar cane farmer, he is bitten by his deputy and becomes one of the funniest undead characters I have ever seen. This movie deserves at least a rental for trial purposes. I myself am a proud owner of this movie!

Attack of the Geronomonsters!
zardoz-1330 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" meet "Return of the Living Dead" in former "South Park" scribe Glasgow Phillips' directorial debut "Undead or Alive," (**1/2 out of ****), a creepy, tongue-in-cheek, zombie western. Everybody looks like they had a good time making this frontier farce about a couple of hard-luck cowboys on the lam from a posse of zombies. Mind you, "Undead or Alive" never takes itself seriously and prefers to spoof its elements rather than scare the daylights out of us. Writer & director Phillips tosses a few surprises into this supernatural saga while the camaraderie between Luke ("SNL" alumnus Chris Kattan) and Elmer (James Denton of "Desperate Housewives") is strong enough to make us laugh at their tribulations right up to the twisted finale. Indeed, Chris Kattan and James Denton reminded me of Bob Hope and Bing Cosby in one of their road comedies. "From Dusk Till Dawn" make-up effects wizard Robert Kurtzman makes his usual sterling contribution that boosts "Undead or Alive" into the 'must watch' category. The flour-faced ghouls are shown gnawing on enough brains and getting shot enough times to make it worth watching at least once. "Slumber Party Massacre 2" lenser Thomas L Callaway endows "Undead or Alive" with a larger-than-life look. Some of his splendid widescreen compositions that make this "Blazing Zombies" horse opera appear almost artistic. Clocking in at a trim 91 minutes, Phillips doesn't wear out his welcome and provides suitable closure. Although it doesn't rank as the greatest zombie western ever made, "Undead or Alive" qualifies as entertaining enough to sit through a couple of times, with sturdy production values and an amusing dialogue.

"Undead or Alive" establishes its premise immediately in a prologue about the legendary Apache chieftain Geronimo (Lew Alexander) who concocted something called 'the white man's curse' that turns ordinary, everyday Anglo-Saxon Americans into flesh feasting fiends. The action unfolds at a hard scrabble farm where a farmer Ben (Brian Posehn of "Eulogy") somehow comes down with Geronimo's curse. He pulls an Ozzie Osborne and bites the head off a chicken before he tears into his wife and your daughter. The story shifts then to the frontier town where an Army deserter on the run, Elmer Winslow (James Denton), climbs off the tailgate of a wagon that he hitched a ride on to cut the dust from his throat in the local saloon. He observes there is not being a piano player and settles behind the ivories to plink out a tune. A sexy saloon girl (Patricia Greer) who loves to display her cleavage decides to accompany him. Luke Budd (Chris Kattan) picks that moment to saunter into the saloon with some form of desert plant for his so-called 'princess,' only to find the slut cuddling up with Elmer. Later, Luke explains that she had told him that she'd marry him. Luke and Elmer tangle briefly, wind up on the floor, and find themselves staring into the business end of a shotgun with the town sheriff Claypool (Matt Besser of "Drillbit Taylor") standing over them. Claypool hauls them off to the calaboose, takes their boots, and confiscates Elmer's $500. They encounter the skin eating zombie farmer locked up in a nearby cell. Eventually, Elmer picks the cell door and they get the drop on Claypool, recover their loot, and hightail it out of town. Predictably, when they skedaddle out of town, Luke rides off in the wrong direction. Generally, Luke is a goofy galoot in a singing cowboy outfit. Elmer describes him later on "as a brokenhearted cowboy that doesn't know his ass from a bag of sweet potatoes." That line of Phillips' dialogue has an Elmore Leonard flavor.

Sheriff Claypool regains consciousness and unties his pot-bellied deputy Cletus, but by then Ben has taken a chomp out of Cletus, so Cletus takes a chomp out of Claypool. The sheriff hangs Ben and assembles a four-man posse to ride with Cletus and him on the trail of our heroes. Before long Claypool and Cletus realize that they love the delicious smell of their posse and chomp on them, turning them into zombies. While Claypool and his posse scour the sagebrush for our heroes, Phillips shifts the story back to the town. The citizens cut Ben down, but discover to their horror that he is still alive and starved for human flesh. Ben embarks on a human buffet and turns everybody into a zombie. Meanwhile, our heroes fall victim to an Apache maiden, Susan (Navi Rawat of CBS-TV's "Numbers"), who is Geronimo's niece and speaks fluent English. She explains that she was educated at a New York boarding school. She disarms and strips them of everything except their Stetsons and boots. Later, after they sweet talk her, she gives them their clothes and guns back and they try to ambush Claypool's posse only to realize that the lawman was bona fide zombies and cannot be killed. Not even the surefire George Romeo shoot-them-in-the-head strategy works. Evidently, the only positive way to kill the zombies is to literally chop their heads off. Luke, Elmer, and Susan outrun the posse only to be captured by Elmer's old U.S. Army buddies who arrest them and escort them back to their fort near the Grand Canyon. When they ride into the fort, our heroes and their army escort get the surprise of their lives.

Glasgow Phillips has written a fairly entertaining zombie western. Whether he knows it or not, he has pulled elements from classic westerns into his oater. Cletus warns our heroes after they have been jailed that the sheriff plans to tie them to the hitch rack and horse whip them for their rambunctiousness. This is a clear homage to "One-Eyed Jacks," the classic western where Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) whips the hero (Marlon Brando) for everybody to see. The special effects get pretty nasty toward the end in the army fort and the ending isn't exactly a happy one.

A terrible zombie comedy that rides Chris Kattan into an early grave
MBunge3 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Undead or Alive is an alleged comedy about zombies in the Wild West starring the guy who was Mango and Mr.Peepers on Saturday Night Live, with a script that appears to have been written on the back of a stained cocktail napkin and direction that looks like the actual director died on the first day of filming and they gave the job to the guy in charge of cleaning the portable toilets on set. I know what you're thinking and trust me, it's even worse than that sounds.

Elmer Winslow (James Denton) is an ex-army soldier who's thrown together with cowboy Luke Budd (Chris Kattan), a walking non sequitur who names his horse Frisky and his six guns Sunshine and Sparkles. They're on the run from a posse just as a zombie plague has broken out. They bump into an Indian girl named Sue (Nawi Rawat), who happens to be Geronimo's niece, and the three of them basically wander around while lame and unfunny crap happens. This movie also features huge, bald comedian Brian Posehn as a zombie that seems to suffer from a learning disorder and veteran character actor/borderline little person Leslie Jordan as a priest who remains on screen for an inexplicably long time.

I'll attest to the facts that Nawi Rawat is awfully cute and there's a little twist at the end of this movie that doesn't completely suck. Those are the only positive things I can list about Undead or Alive. Every other thing you see or hear while watching this film is bad. And I don't mean so bad that it's good. I mean just plain, old fashioned bad.

Let me briefly elaborate on that.

1. This movie is supposed to be a comedy and because it's supposed to be a comedy, writer/director Glasgow Douglas apparently thought that would automatically make things funny. It doesn't. Douglas' sense of humor extends no further than him pointing the camera at Chris Kattan and telling him to "make me laugh". Kattan makes an effort, but it's like he's trapped in one of those horrible SNL sketches that make you turn off the TV and go to bed. There are more laughs in the two minutes of outtakes that play during the closing credits than in the rest of the film.

2. Nothing in the story makes sense. Not the way Elmer behaves, not the way Luke behaves, not the way Sue behaves and not the way the zombies behave. It's like they did the entire movie in one take, making it up as they went along, constantly forgetting what they just did and then doing something different. If you ate a marshmallow for every time something stupid happened on screen, by the time you finished watching Undead or Alive they'd have to cut a hole in the side of your home and remove you with a forklift and a flatbed truck.

3. The acting ranges from "embarrassing to see during a third grade school play" to "James Denton doing the exact same stuff he does on Desperate Housewives, just with zombies". A couple of the supporting characters look like they're doing a vaudeville routine while others look like they apparently too much Prozac before coming to work that day. I've seen informercials with better performances than this dreck.

I have no idea how Undead or Alive ever got made. I've seen some atrocious films, but at least they looked like they were made out of duct tape, spit and delusions of grandeur and no one spent any real money on them. But while Undead or Alive is cheap, it's not that cheap. It's got costumes, make up, some actors you've heard of and scenes shot on location. They probably spent more making this movie than the average American will make in 15 years. That money had to come from somewhere and unless writer/director Phillips earned it 5 bucks a shot giving out hand jobs in truck stops, I can't imagine where. It would have been better to put all the cash in a pile and burn it or smear each individual dollar in peanut butter and feed them all to the homeless.

Well, I did rent this thing so the bastards who made Undead or Alive got some of my money. Don't give them any of yours.

mind-numbingly bad
movieman_kev20 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Elmore (James Denton of ABC's short-lived "Threat Matrix") and Luke (Chris Kattan, whom is usually a huge tell to avoid any movie he's in) band together in the old west when they're both in jail and plot to escape and rob the town's corrupt sheriff in this Western-tinged horror comedy. The duo soon have to contend with the Union Army and zombies, but not before finding help in the form of Geronimo's niece, Sue (Navi Rawat of "Feast" and it's upcoming sequel). The jokes are fairly lame, the story not much better, and the inclusion of Kattan is possibly the nail that will doom this film to the bargain bin before long. The most pathetic thing is this is actual poor Chris's most watchable film he's been in. That, i'm much aware of, is damning it with false praise indeed. Definitely skip this one.

Can't Die Soon Enough
secretagent_00722 January 2008
This movie starts with the worst zombie attack ever filmed, then proceeds to give us the worst bar fight ever filmed, then keeps it up for another 80 minutes with the worst genre mish-mash ever conceived. Chris Kattan is funny, but sadly, that's the only good thing to be said about this movie. What kind of a hell do we live in where Chris Kattan is the high point of a film?

This movie takes a bad western, injects it with zombies, and attempts to make it all funny. Kattan is a wannabe cowboy who finds himself jailed with an Army deserter when a zombie outbreak hits town. They hightail it, but are followed by the now zombified sheriff and his idiotic deputy. Then the movie makes a really stupid mistake by ignoring the rules that define every genre being parodied. The zombies are not mindless brain-eaters like in every other decent zombie movie, they hang onto pieces of their former personalities. For instance, the zombie sheriff still wants to get the money our heroes stole at the beginning. An even simpler rule is thrown out the window when it is explained that gunshots to the head don't kill zombies. Now it requires complete decapitation. It could work in a different movie, but not in a comedy co-starring Chris Kattan. I'll say it again: he's funny, but not funny enough to justify sitting through this mess.

Seems like you like our guns too; and I ain't even gonna start on the fire water shite.

Two men on the lam. One an Army deserter (James Denton - "Desperate Housewives") and the other a dumb as dirt wanna be cowboy (Chris Kattan - Santa's Slay). They are being chased by the posse which is slowly becoming zombified.

They join with Geronimo's niece (Navi Rawat - Feast, "Numb3rs") as they fight off the posse.

There is a lot of zombie gore, and some nasty decapitations, but it comes in a comedy, so you really don't focus on it.

It's kinda hard not to focus on Geronimo's niece as she runs around in a sleeveless top that is really low cut! Nice skintastic moment from Elizabeth Slagsvol after she becomes a zombie and gets the preacher (Leslie Jordan - "Will & Grace", Sordid Lives)

Could have used more "gore" but I was entertained.
stormruston13 February 2009
I bought this in the discount bin for 5.00 bucks. It was worth that just for the extras and gag reel. This is not a great movie but western zombie movie hybrids rarely are meant to be. They are meant to entertain. This one does that on all levels.

The two lead actors are very good, funny at times, playing it straight at others. The written material is pretty good, a few good chuckles and a couple of laughs throughout the movie.

The special effects are generally low budget but still very watchable, and they never pull you out of the movie.

The story is simple and moves along very briskly as a "B" movie like this should.

For a "B" Zombie movie this was a good one. Fun and entertaining, if you like well done lower end movies, you can do a lot worse then this.

Excruciatingly painful to watch whether you are alive or dead
jordondave-2808521 July 2023
(2007) Undead or Alive WESTERN COMEDY HORROR

Straight-to-rental low budget flick which can be excruciatingly painful to watch co-written and directed by Glasgow Phillips stars James Denton as Elmer and Chris Kattan as Luke who break out of jail taking the Sheriff's money, meanwhile a curse is spreading throughout the town regarding an old folk tale about Geronimo passing a zombie hex towards the Western front. And the two stars coming across one of Geronimo's granddaughter's with several infected zombies coming after them. There's a lot of things that didn't make any sense upon watching this film such as how come there was only one horse in the cavalry and that was Luke's and since when did Zombies able to think for themselves if they're supposed to be dead- the film never answers! The comedy is lousy, the horror stuff is unconvincing since it went from zombies riding the horses to eating them and the female star is annoying making this experience to be meant for pot heads who don't need a lot of logic. Bomb.

Good for some laughs

Call me crazy, but I didn't expect this Western/Zombie/Comedy film to be a cinematic masterpiece. Maybe that is why I didn't take this film too seriously. Go figure. My only hope going into this movie was that I might have a few laughs, and I did. More than a few, actually. The movie managed to keep me pretty well amused throughout, and I'm not easily amused. More than once, I found myself laughing in one scene and grossed-out in the next. At times, I was even laughing and grossed-out at the same time. Perhaps these abrupt changes of emotion are part of what made the movie so entertaining to me. Or, maybe it was the clever writing and the great casting. As expected, Kattan was funny and Denton was good. However, the supporting cast in this movie definitely held their own. Kudos to the casting director.

So, basically, if you can keep from taking this movie too seriously and you're in the mood for a few laughs, I think you'll be pleased.

Cowboys and Zombies ok, Comedy poor
nickboldrini23 April 2018
This commits the main fault of any comedy, in that it fails to be funny. The Zombie and Cowboy action is ok, and the special effects acceptable (its obviously low budget) - but its only vaguely amusing in places. That may be a matter of taste, but you have been warned.

A fabulous zombie comedy. Loved it.
brianskeet12 February 2009
What a surprisingly great gem of a movie this is.

I expected nothing and what I got was a fabulous little comedy/zombie/film that had me and my husband chuckling no end and me - a giggling girl in our relationship - found, myself, jumping out of my skin.

A perfect combination of wit, horror and giggles.

Recommended to anyone who loved "My Name Is Bruce".

Terrific entertainment.

And it is gory as hell, which makes for the most romantic viewing!

SEE IT. JUMP AND LAUGH.

It is a terrific piece of film-making!

slick and clever
grizzledgeezer9 March 2018
I found my copy yesterday, and decided to watch it again, because I didn't remember how it ended. I have to take exception to the many negative reviews.

Despite the beautiful cinematography, spot-on direction from a first-time director, and generally excellent production values, it's decidedly episodic. There are too many characters, and there isn't enough time to get familiar with the principals. But the humor is underplayed, which keeps it from sliding into camp. (This is not the TV "Batman".)

But it is a damned (joke intended) funny film, especially the second time around. It's the kind of film you'll want to share with your friends. It's cheap, so it's easy to recommend.

Painfully unfunny horror comedy Western rubbish.
poolandrews5 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Undead or Alive is set in the Old Wild West & starts as US army deserter Elmer Winslow (James Denton) rides into a small town, after getting into a fight with a Cowboy named Luke Rudd (Chris Kattan) the two are thrown in jail by a corrupt Sheriff who also steal all their money. Elmer manages to pick the jail door lock & escapes with Luke who then both rob the Sheriff in order to get their money back & a bit of compensation. Meanwhile a local man named Ben (Brian Posehn) has been turned into a brain eating zombie & starts spreading the virus turning the rest of the town into brain eating zombies, now infected the zombie Sheriff, his Deputy & a posse of men head after Elmer & Luke spreading the zombie plague wherever they go...

Also known as Undead or Alive: A Zomedy this awful comedy horror Western was written & directed by Glasgow Phillips & is a stark reminder to me that I really should stop watching low budget straight to video horror, or at least choose my films a little better. Right, the problems with Undead or Alive are numerous but as a horror comedy it falls way short on both counts & as a Western it does nothing other than to set it's story in the Old Wild West. I found Undead or Alive spectacularly funny, the opening scene where various pieces of text explain some background & one reads 'for those who don't like reading it's nearly over' or something like that is just plain insulting & is a film that feels absolutely desperate for laughs before it's even started. Then a sequence in which a zombie wanders around & steps into a bucket & on a rake which bizarrely only comes up to his knee is some incredibly unfunny zombie slapstick routine. As I see comments here on the IMDb describing Undead or Alive as funny I would honestly like someone to name one funny sequence in this laugh free film, just one. The one-liners are awful, the slapstick three Stooges routines are awful, the visual gags are awful & I just can't think of one even slightly amusing moment in this misfire of a horror comedy. The character's are awful, a sheepish idiotic Cowboy who keeps a picture of his Horse in a locket & a army deserter, an evil Sheriff & his dumb comedy relief Deputy & a town of faceless idiots who get about two minutes of screen time. The only bright spark is Sue the native Indian girl who has at least some personality & is quite attractive to look at but the pluses stop there. The pacing & plotting are terrible & it's as predictable as they come.

Considering that Robert Kurtzman was the special make-up effect producer, just look at some of his other credits, the make-up here is surprisingly tatty. The zombies look awful & despite what you may read the gore is limited to a few blood splatters & some irritating machine gun edited flesh biting where you can barely see anything anyway because it's edited so quickly. Undead or Alive is just a spectacular misfire on all fronts from the lame humour & jokes to the shoddy make-up & badly edited gory bits. I really am trying to understand why Undead or Alive has any positive comments for it on the IMDb but I just can't, I really can't. Like a lot of modern films there's a bit of CGI here at the end when a fort blows up & it looks terrible, this is the sort of computer effect you expect in a computer game.

Apparently filmed in Santa Fe in New Mexico the films looks quite nice shot on location the production values are alright as far as the sets & costumes go but if I wanted that sort of thing I'd watch a proper Western, wouldn't I? Like much of everything else the acting sucks, the two leads in particular are annoying.

Undead or Alive is a horror comedy that fails to deliver on either front in a big way, totally unfunny & with surprisingly poor make-up effects I just don't see what this has going for it. Every joke & gag is bottom of the barrel stuff & the horror is reduced to silly slapstick that just looks terrible.

"A Baby Field Mouse? No a Zombie Penis! "
gattonero97522 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I knew I should have known better to see a zombie movie with Chris Kattan in it.

I can't help it, I watch anything with a zombie in it.

I really knew I was in trouble when I saw Brian Posehn as a zombie. I mean he makes an imposing one being that he is 6'7" in height. But they made him a bumbling idiot zombie and not scary at all. He even bites chicken's head off to eat brains! Come on! Right there I knew I was in for a mediocre zombie flick..

Now James Denton as 'Elmer Winslow' was somewhat good casting. He does an OK cowboy. But Chris Kattan? No way! He is just so..feminine in his way of acting. And he being the love interest of the beautiful Navi Rawat who plays 'Sue' Geronimo's niece, was a joke. And I wasn't laughing.

Leslie Jordan as 'Padre' was OK and was the only character caught up in some suspense with zombie s all around him and he trying to just get some water without being seen. His scenes were short and in the end his part was wasted.

The whole movie stunk for on a lot of levels. 1st of all the zombies talk! And not like in the way funnier and scarier classic 1985's 'Return of the Living Dead' talk-like-a-way but like regular people!? And you can't kill a zombie the conventional way of shooting them in the head!? According to Geronimo, if you are bitten and turn into a zombie, you can become normal again by eating the flesh of the medicine person who put the zombie curse in the 1st place! Come on! That just killed it for me. Zombies are just not suppose to talk in any way shape or form!or once you have been bitten , you can't become normal again! Yeah right!

I'll give this movie a couple of firsts though. Besides the talking like regular folks zombies, we have a sword-yielding zombie!, a Zombie dog cameo!? And the ultimate clincher, skipping zombies!!? I kid you not, when I saw Brian Posehn, who at the beginning of the film had killed his wife and daughter and now at the end of the film he digs them up from their graves and they rejoice they are back together again as a family albeit a zombie one, and they skip off to the sunset and "die" happily ever after was just too much. Even their dog became a zombie! But the ultimate greatest 1st is...and the only part that made me chuckle for a sec was when the 'Cletus' character, played by Chris Coppola, who is now a zombie goes off to urinate (a 1st in where a zombie actually has bodily functions)and comes back crying to Sheriff Claypool played by Matt Besser(yes he's related to the 3 Stooges Joe Besser:he is his Grandson) And hands him something and the sheriff says , "What the hell is this a baby field mouse?" And Cletus says, "No it's not" and the sheriff just realizes what it is, a zombie penis!! LOL

Alright, so if you are in the mood for a stupid zombie movie, them look no further and watch this Western/Zombie fiasco.

Zombies can be a little funny
chelano4 November 2010
OK this movie is a mostly a horror comedy with zombies. I believe they called it a zombedy or something weird like that. When I first saw the movie start, I thought I might hate it. But surprisingly it was not that bad. It was good enough for me to want to finish it. The main characters are played by James Denton and Chris Kattan. Denton was more of the mean cool cowboy where Kattan was just a cowboy wannabe who couldn't even shoot a gun. They are met later by an Indian girl played by Navi Rawat. I actually liked the characters played by Denton and Kattan, but Rawat seemed a little off. There are a couple fun characters in the film that I enjoyed more who were side people. One would be the first zombie to appear in the film. It was Brian Posehn. It was interesting to see him in make up. Then there was the priest, played by Leslie Gordon. He has an older style of comedy that it fun to watch. Now the story line of the film was not that good. They really proved this at the ending. But the fun they have throughout the film is what keeps you interested. Another surprise was the make up used for the zombies. Some movies like this will just make the skin pale and the eyes colorless and that is it. The zombies in this film were rotting like normal zombies. So overall, it was not that bad to watch.
