Quotes

  • Sam Trask : [Willie goes back to the movie set and discovers Sam is in one of the buildings]  Sam!

Willie Lawrence : [comes out of the building]  Go home, Willie.

    Willie Lawrence : What?

Sam Trask : I said, go home!

Willie Lawrence : Tell me why you didn't stay in the guesthouse.

Sam Trask : Look, I figured you were right. I figured that you just didn't need any more of this hassle. I thought if I went to the hospital early enough, it'd be cool, but there was a cop outside.

Willie Lawrence : I know that. I went there, first.

Sam Trask : Look, just go home, Willie. Go back to your nice, safe house, where everything is warm and calm and everybody talks civilly to everybody else. I can handle this myself!

Willie Lawrence : [angrily]  Right. Just the way you handled everything else, man! WELL, TO HELL WITH YOU!

Sam Trask : Look, I appreciate what you've done!

Willie Lawrence : You don't appreciate anything! You don't even know what the word means! You think you can just come in here and get me involved, up to my ears, in your mess, then tell me to walk home, treat me like some stray mutt following you around? All right, do it alone, man! I have had it with you!

    [starts walking away]

    Sam Trask : Willie! Willie!

    [Willie stops]

    Sam Trask : I can't... I can't do it alone.

  • Sam Trask : [Willie is at a Old West movie set looking for Sam, who is hiding out. Sam then comes out of a building and holds up his index fingers as sharpshooters]  Hold it right there, partner! Drop your gun real slow.

Willie Lawrence : Now, I didn't come here to play cowboy, Sam.

Sam Trask : Real slow-like. Nice and easy.

Willie Lawrence : Knock it off.

    Sam Trask : Drop it!

Willie Lawrence : For God's sake...

Sam Trask : Drop your gun and put your hands up!

[an exasperated Willie puts his hands up]

    Sam Trask : YAHOO!

    Willie Lawrence : Oh...

[Sam runs over to hug Willie]

Sam Trask : Good to see you, Willie.

[they walk and sit on a balcony]

Sam Trask : Well, I guess we better take cover, partner, before the sheriff--or the watchman shows up and throws us in the pokey. Hey, it's crazy, you know? Other kids used to sneak into movies on Saturday. WE used to sneak into the place where the movies were made.

Willie Lawrence : Listen, I'm sorry about your father, Sam.

Sam Trask : Is that why you came?

Willie Lawrence : But before I knew he was in the hospital, I wasn't gonna come. After I found out here I am, so I guess that's why.

Sam Trask : Thanks. Hey, you know, if we get busted here, it won't be the first time. You remember that time we...

Willie Lawrence : Oh, I remember, all right, and you made sure we got busted that time and I'm sure you're gonna get us busted this time. Last time it was because you had us using the studio sound equipment to act out our gunfights.

Sam Trask : [laughs and stands up]  Boy, was my old man mad!

Willie Lawrence : Well, who wouldn't have been? Man, every damn bit of trouble I got into as a kid was because of you and now, here I am all over again!

Sam Trask : Hey, lighten up, Willie Boy. You must have wanted to be led because you followed.

Willie Lawrence : Well, maybe then, but not anymore. I don't even want to be here, now!

Sam Trask : Harboring a fugitive? That offend your moral code or something?

Willie Lawrence : [stands up]  What offends my moral code is exactly what offended it when you got yourself into this mess, the way you used me to put your plan into action and then once I did, nothing! It's like you and I didn't even know each other.

Sam Trask : So, what did you want me to do, cut you into the action? Now, don't tell me you wanted to be an accomplice.

    Willie Lawrence : No, I didn't, and I wouldn't have been.

Sam Trask : So, what are you complaining about? You didn't want to be involved and you weren't.

Willie Lawrence : Not involved. I'm the guy you used to set up your victim! You came to me and said "Hey, that Linda Beechum is really cool. How about arranging something?" and don't think the police didn't find out about that, either.

Sam Trask : I didn't know they did.

Willie Lawrence : Well, they did, and the FBI, and they didn't let up on me for the entire time that she was gone. Now, bing! You turn up after three years right out of the blue? And you want to pick up just where we left off playing Cowboys and Indians, here? I don't wanna play! Now, if there's something I can do for you about your father...

Sam Trask : Help me get to see him.

Willie Lawrence : How is it you can manage to get all the way from Mexico to here, but you can't manage the five miles from here to the hospital?

Sam Trask : Look, they're gonna be watching for me.

Willie Lawrence : That's right! Watching for YOU! What can I do?

Sam Trask : Just get me there.

  • Sam Trask : [while shaving in the guesthouse's bathroom, he notices Doug walking in]  Hello, Mr. Lawrence.

Doug Lawrence : Hello, Sam. You can finish shaving, then you're gonna leave.

Sam Trask : I know, I know. I caused Willie trouble and I'm sorry.

Doug Lawrence : You shouldn't have called him. Willie's risking a great deal, by helping you.

Sam Trask : Look, I said I'm sorry.

Doug Lawrence : It's not good enough.

Sam Trask : [notices Doug still standing behind him]  What are you gonna do, just stand there and make sure I get out or do you want to be sure I don't cause Willie Boy any more trouble than I have?

Doug Lawrence : You haven't changed at all, have you?

Sam Trask : No, I haven't! Why should I? Nothing else has. Nothing and nobody.

Doug Lawrence : I don't agree with you. I think some of us have. I never liked the way you did things. Even before you became politically involved, you were always combative. Always Sam Trask versus the world.

Sam Trask : I have to believe in what I'm doing.

Doug Lawrence : I don't doubt that. I never questioned your sincerity, merely your methods, your unscrupulousness, the way you implicated Willie.

Sam Trask : Willie and I have been through this, already.

[he exits the bathroom to get dressed]

Doug Lawrence : You always had such potential, even when you were getting all the other kids into trouble, even then. There was no doubt who was the leader.

Sam Trask : Yeah, and as far as you're concerned, my potential's run amok.

Doug Lawrence : Yep. I'm afraid it has, but it's still there intact. Why didn't you get me to help you, instead of Willie?

Sam Trask : [laughs sarcastically]  Terrific. Corporate lawyer defends hippie radical.

Doug Lawrence : I could have gotten you another one, a good one. Things aren't going to get any easier on you, Sam.

Sam Trask : Ah, it wouldn't work.

[gets up to get his shirt]

Doug Lawrence : Give yourself a chance. You're a bright boy...

Sam Trask : Oh, knock it off, Mr. Lawrence! Knock it off and leave me alone!

    [sighs]

Doug Lawrence : [disgusted]  So, you haven't changed. All right, I'll leave you alone, but when Willie gets back, I want you to get dressed and leave.

    [starts towards the door]

    Sam Trask : Mr. Lawrence.

    [Doug turns around]

Sam Trask : Until I see my father, don't call the cops.

    Doug Lawrence : Good luck.

    [exits the guesthouse]

  • Letitia 'Buddy' Lawrence : [yelling from downstairs to Willie, who is in his bed sleeping]  Willie! Willie!

    Willie Lawrence : [groggily]  Yeah?

    Letitia 'Buddy' Lawrence : Telephone!

Willie Lawrence : [Willie goes to the hallway to answer it and yells downstairs]  Hang it up, Buddy!

    [over the phone]

    Willie Lawrence : Hello?

Sam Trask : [in a phone booth]  Willie, it's Sammy. Willie?

Willie Lawrence : Hello, Sam. I thought I saw you, last night.

Sam Trask : I wasn't sure if you had.

Willie Lawrence : What are you doing back here?

Sam Trask : I need your help.

Willie Lawrence : I don't know if I can help you, Sam.

Sam Trask : Look, I don't want to ask you, Willie. I know how you feel, but I've got no choice. I need you to drive me someplace.

Willie Lawrence : [shocked]  Not a chance! I shouldn't even be talking to you.

Sam Trask : Look, it's no big deal. It won't take that long.

Willie Lawrence : You know, I am the last person you should be calling for help.

Sam Trask : I thought maybe we could let bygones be...

Willie Lawrence : Our friendship went out with the last bygone and that was your choice, not mine!

Sam Trask : Look, I can't show myself, Willie! Do you know where I'll be?

Willie Lawrence : [over the line]  I don't want to know.

Sam Trask : [in a western drawl]  Sure you do, partner. I'll be at the Old...

    Willie Lawrence : I'm sorry, Sam. Good-bye.

    [hangs up phone]
