Mudd's women
fig-7527512 April 2021
In the very first scene on the planet we meet Lucius Lavin and his wives. If you remember the old Star Trek episode with Harcourt Fenton Mudd, you will immediately associate Lucius Lavin with Harry Mudd. It was good casting, they picked an actor with a similar look and screen presence.

As long as you just go along with it, and don't take the episode too seriously, you will enjoy it. Mostly, I found myself wondering why Sheppard didn't do something about the situation sooner, but, apart from that, it came across as a well written and fun episode.

A nice fun break from the action and psychological episodes
TheDudeReviewsStuff21 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First full disclosure on Richard Kind. We were born in the same city and hospital a day apart. He also went to high school with my wife who knew him. Admittedly I am a fan of his for his ability to bring a likability to otherwise smarmy characters.

SGA episodes tend to fall into three categories: action, drama, or psychological. Every once in a while they throw in a fun episode. SG1 used similar techniques with the enjoyable Dom Deluise episodes.

This episode follows the same path. A character who doesn't fit in bringing much needed comic relief after a series of dramatic episodes. Kind does a great job as the leader/sex symbol of his planet. Lucius Lavin. That fact alone should have given the SGA crew reason enough to question things. Yet, they allow themselves to be "smitten' with him, except for Sheppard who is fighting a cold so is not impacted. Of course they did not know right away he was keeping everyone in love with him by use of a herb concoction he created.

Sheppard saves the.day by borrowing Dr. McKay's laptop and tablets, which he and Dr. Beckett use to create an antidote. Which they also give to the inhabitants of the planet. You can only assume how it turns out for Lucius when they send him back to explain things.

Please resist.

Warning: Spoilers
Oooo-kay. I understand that after all the philosophical issues of the previous episodes, the show went for a lighter plot here. On paper it's even rather interesting: the threat this time does not use violence but charm, and as a result it is both much more insidious and painful to eradicate. The guy in question is not even a villain as such. He's egotistic, greedy, careless and not very bright (except when it comes to advancing his own interests) but he probably does not wish anybody's deaths.

Still, some scenes were so over-the-top that I actually cringed several times in embarrassment for the characters I usually like (particularly Beckett: Paul McGillion really overdoes it, and Terri Higginson comes second). The last part gets better when the conflict finally appears and people start trying to DO something besides sit there looking enthralled. There are some funny moments but they can't hide the fact that for us viewers the charm just doesn't work.

I do not consent
ok-notifications-517-43993214 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Some guy uses a drug to force females into non consentual relationships (let's call it that, IMDb seems to filter the r-word), tries the same thing at Atlantis, fails, the Atlantis team removes his drug and makes jokes about lots of upcoming divorces (seriously?). At the end of this episode, McKay tries to keep a part of that date r*** drug for himself, which everyone just smiles away.

What was wrong with the writers of this episode?

Urgh

Really really disliked this episode. The television equivalent of sticking your fingers down your throat. It wasn't funny, it just made me cringe. Light hearted in the most vomit inducing way. Urgh.

Not as amusing as they want it to be
gergle-111 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Charlatan has a potion that makes him irresistible. Multiple characters who haven't been affected yet violate enough protocols to allow him to take over the minds of almost everyone.

Sheppard should have shot him between the eyes about 1/3 through the episode.

When it was intended as a comedy...
omero-omero1 August 2022
Then it failed, miserably.

Mr. Lascivious got stuff and surreptitiously manages to infiltrate Atlantis.

That would be an interesting plot, but instead gets elaborated along in a disturbing, awkward sequence of events, lame jokes and stereotypes.

All in all, this episode can be skipped altogether, unless one is a fan of that kind of actor that mostly portrays obnoxious characters.

Who does he know ?

Richard Kind (Lucius) is simply a contemptible human being. Kind is playing himself, his contemptible personally comes through in every thing he's ever appeared in.

The fact he's appeared multiple times in the Stargate franchise leads me to believe Richard Kind must have had dirt on someone in casting or a producer. Something really bad like a picture of them with a "Live Boy" or a "Dead Girl".

This episode is too far outside the usually theme of the series, it's weird and just strange in general. The two episodes, with Lucius and the "JUMP THE SHARK" Las Vegas episode where the three worst of the series. They had some stinkers but those were the worst.
