Pamela Excels

Pamela Britton perhaps did her best acting on this episode. Not to give anything away, but there is something of a shock ending which makes this episode a bit profound, especially considering the toil Pamela's character goes through to avoid this shock occurring. Great singing by Pam, and also a believable crying scene by her. Pam, at times, did show equal versatility even within the My Favorite Martian series, particularly where her character takes on the task of having Uncle Martin inside her brain. I really enjoy this episode.

Outstanding crime drama

It's a near perfect 30 minute episode, weaving its way through the course of actions, setting up a series of possible conclusions, and yet, at the very end, the viewer is presented with an outcome that hardly seems possible, and yet has layers of horror so profound as to shake the senses.

The writers of this episode crafted something truly special, and the actors pulled it off beautifully effectively.

Pamela Britton Showcase

A torch singer hires Pete to find out who's blackmailing her

Average episode with the usual attractive series features, but nothing special. Well, except maybe for fans of Pamela Britton, (Mr. & Mrs. North {1952-54}), who gets an extended showcase as the conflicted widow. Plus, that's really her doing the expert torch singing. Also, catch little Anne Whitfield's first scene where her many twitches are perfectly timed. The ending manages a neat little twist that I didn't see coming. Anyhow, Pete's his usual low-key self, while Lt. Jacoby sort of plays tag-along. One thing for sure, I won't be taking anything electronic to a guy named Arkie.

COULD YOU GUESS THE BLACKMAILER?

An outstanding episode. 10 STARS.

I did some reviews for the BLONDIE tv series, especially the episodes where Pamela Britton sang. She was an accomplished singer, having worked with Frank Sinatra earlier in her career. She does a class act job here, playing Vicki Landell, a popular lounge singer with lots of baggage.

It seems she is being blackmailed for killing her gangster husband many years earlier. Her husband got everything that was coming to him, but thats not the point. She is in one heck of a jam ... but wait until you see who her blackmailer is. A real nifty case for Peter Gunn.

Pamela Britton, just a few years before her co-starring role as kooky Mrs. Brown on MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, should have won an Emmy for this role. She is that good.

Also popular juvenile radio actress Anne Whitfield plays Carol, her daughter. Anne later branched out into tv and worked for years in everything from westerns to cop shows. Top direction by Byron Kane, who also played Barney on the series.

Not to be missed. SEASON 2 remastered MGM dvd box set.
