Protestant Lord Henry of Navarr refuses to believe the Catholic threat. Steven still searches for the Doctor. The guards of The Abbot of Amboise attempt to take Anne Chaplet back from the safety of Nicholas and Gaston, but fail. The Abbot himself arrives, Steven sees him and is astonished by his resemblance to the Doctor, he explains the similarities, his Hugeunot friends struggle with Steven's story, assuming he's a Catholic spy he's detained but escapes in search of The Doctor (Amboise.) Marshal Gaspard announces that 'The Sea beggar' will be killed. Gaston confronts Steven once again, but spares his life allowing him to run free. Anne discovers Steven and offers to help, the pair head for Saint Martin. War with Spain seems likely.
It's a brilliant story for Steven, possibly the strongest for him. Peter Purves is exceptionally good throughout.
It is so well acted, that's the first point to make, Chris Tranchell (Colbert,) David Weston (Nicholas Muss,) and André Morell (Marhsal Gaspard.) The unmistakable voice of Leonard Sachs too, he is such a charismatic actor, he was tremendously well cast for the part.
It is such an exciting episode, there is so much going on, made all the more impressive by the lack of aliens/monsters, all the suspense is built up by real life events.
