Great Change of Pace from previous episodes
Rcwilkinson12321 April 2008
With the exception of 'Cyborg,' the other five episodes of "Smallville" since the amazing 100th episode 'Reckoning,' while entertaining in some ways, were slow in a lot of ways. 'Mercy' changed the pace and sort of story with the captivation of Lionel Luthor, at the mercy of a former LuthorCorp employee.

Lionel faces some of the ultimate physical tests of his life, and must play several "games" with the abductor in order to survive. Stakes are raised even higher when Martha, a woman that he has been intrigued to romantically interested in for a few years, is threatened by the captor. Ultimately, Lionel must chose between the mortal continuation of his or Martha's life, and based on his evil actions of past years of his life, makes a surprising decision.

This episode is quite exciting, and belongs in the top half of the best episodes of the season. It is intriguing to see Lionel, a man who his whole life has wielded great power and has been used at controlling others' lives, at the mercy of someone who used to work for him. The tables truly are turned on the billionaire in this episode. We also see that Lionel truly does have romantic feelings for Martha, which is despicable since Lionel was a factor in Jonathan Kent's demise. The viewers understand that he is low enough to go for a woman that he has always been intrigued in, even if she has just recently been widowed. Also, Clark learns that Lionel knows his secret, though Lionel, through previous research years before and through additional recent investigation, had already put the pieces together and discovered what Clark is all about.

Not really an episode review, more mixed views. :P

Warning: Spoilers
This is a pure Saw rip-off. And a good one. They got rid of all the excess blood and Smallvilled it. Love the Smallville cast. This show is so well put together and has this cool and handsome cast. Kristen Kreuk is wonderful as the vulnerable Lana Lang. Whatever emotions needed to motivate her characters choices she delivers it. I also like her fling with Lex since it makes the Lex-scenes livelier. Really tired now of the 'I can't tell her the truth about me because then she'll be at risk'. - But hey... it maintains the suspense of the two mains ever getting it together for real.

Great episode. - Keep ripping. ;) For u who don't think this is brutal and bloody enough go rent Saw I,II,III and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

If your a huge Saw fan...

Warning: Spoilers
...then don't watch this episode. It will make you a bit mad. It is a complete ripoff of the gruesome trilogy known as Saw. I thought the dialogue was a bit over dramatic, the "tasks" that Lionel was required to do were a bit simple compared to what Jigsaw could've come up with. Though i will say that this episode is better then watching Lana becoming a vampire. Or Lana taking up most of the screen time. So, even if this episode is a ripoff, give it a chance. I for one liked it. Oh and the reason why i think this episode is probably one of season 5's best, is because we see Lionel complete his turn from the side of evil. (i could've said dark side, but i'm not Darth Vader)Our thoughts about Lionel being pure evil changes, and we see him turn from selfish to selfless. So all in all, decent episode. Better then watching Lana whine about not knowing Clarks deep secrets. Give it a chance.

Life Is Full of Surprises
claudio_carvalho9 July 2007
Lionel Luthor is chased by a man with mask and forced to play hangman to save his life. Later, he is abducted by the same stranger and has to play lethal games to survive. Martha is also kidnapped and in his last test, the life of Martha is also put at stake and Lionel has to fight to save her life. Meanwhile, Chloe, Clark and Luthor join forces trying to find Martha and Lionel.

In this excellent episode, actually a rip-off of "Saw", the greatest question certainty is: "- Did Lionel notice that the weapon had no bullets or was he really sacrificing his life to save Martha?". With regard to Clark's secret, now there is no doubt about the awareness of Lionel. Fortunately he will not share this secret with his own son. My vote is ten.

Best episode in months. . .
Csw62121 April 2006
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

In my opinion, this has been the best episode of Smallville in quite a while. First, it had an exciting, suspenseful plot line. Second, Lana Lang was only in one scene. She always makes me feel like I'm watching All My Children. And best of all, there were no meteor rocks in sight. And for once, Clark actually did something Superman-like. Albeit, I was a bit perplexed as to why Clark couldn't hear his mother screaming for help. And on a similar note, if Clark can run half as fast as Superman can fly, then he could have scoured the entire planet, finding Lionel and Martha within seconds, as opposed to waiting for Chloe to trace the signal to a building 5 miles away, and then driving there in Lex's car. And I must admit, I was somewhat disappointed when they revealed that the guy in the mask was just some disgruntled factory worker. But all in all, I give it a 9 out of 10.

Watch John Glover Shine!
spasek3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Of all the episodes that centered around Lionel Luthor, this one is my favorite. John Glover is arguably the best actor in the series, although I would also contend that Michael Rosenbaum is right there with him. In fact, when both of these wonderful performers left after the 7th season, they both left irreplaceable voids in the show that could never be filled again.

Lionel finds himself the target of a disgruntled employee, who makes Lionel jump through a series of games in order to expose him and gain a confession as well as an apology. The games themselves are actually intriguing, especially when Martha Kent ends up an unwitting participant.

We finally get the true reveal at the end when Lionel confesses to Clark that he's known about him since the crystal he held turned him into a vessel for Jor-El. Of course, the bigger question is what Lionel plans to do with this information. He tries to assure Clark that he has no intention of harming him or exposing him, but of course, Clark is more than just a little bit skeptical. Given everything Lionel has done in the past, we can't blame Clark who gives Lionel a true warning should Lionel ever cross the line.

Unfortunately, the story also drives yet another nail into Lex's coffin of descent as he overhears Lionel telling Martha what a special boy Clark is. Lionel makes it even worse when he confesses to Lex that Clark is a man that a father would be proud to have for a son. Most people fail to realize that people impel, but they don't compel.

John Glover was nothing short of masterful in this series, and it's always a delight to watch a true artist and performer shine!

Fair Episode... but the 'Saw' ripoff is embarrassing
andremarek11 September 2006
I think this was a fair episode for the great 5th season of Smallville. John Glover's as well as Annette O'Toole's performances make it worth your while. The photography is quite good, but I would've liked it to be darker considering the tone of the script.

Speaking of the script... this is a complete 'Saw' ripoff. The "I want to play a game," line is used several times and you can't help but laugh at the scriptwriter's (Steven S. DeNight) serious belief that no one will notice this was a ripoff.

I don't like the fact that Lionel's a good guy, though. I'm sick of him changing sides all the time. He's one of the coolest characters I've ever seen when he's evil, and it would be great if he would just stay that way.

All in all, this is a good addition to the series. 6/10

And now the « Saw » episode...
m-4782616 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What did I say? It seems as though writers were really out of ideas, this season, and wrote random stories to include bits and pieces of the main arc into. First a Flatliners rip-off, then Carrie, and now Saw. As fascinating as Lionel Luthor can be, it's always satisfying to see him go through all these ordeals throughout the series. He's a ruthless businessman, to say the least. Only in this episode, you can't help but feel sympathy for him, and find his abductor sort of pathetic. I mean, losing your job is not a death sentence either, and I'm pretty sure he brought all the bad luck he got afterwards, on himself... Also, putting Martha in the crossfire, made me dislike him even more, but it made the episode more gripping as well. I'm also getting tired of Clark's all high and mighty attitude, when he broke Lana's heart, for very hypocritical reasons. And seem to forget he's far from being perfect as well. Chloe really improved from her drama queen days, and Lex is perfecting his role as the series most ambiguous villains. His reaction to another one of his father's cutting remarks, at the end of the episode, only enhanced that. And frankly, I like his relationship/dynamic with Lana, and how it's getting to what it was implied since season 1. No songs lately, which is frustrating, because I've spotted several scenes that could've used a couple. The episode ends with Lionel in catatonic state, writing another cryptic message from Jor-El...

A great episode - enjoyment factor 100%
TheMelancholySpirit16 February 2020
Honestly, even considering this episode to rip off the Saw franchise, who cares? This was done well and the scenes with the masked man and the little "tasks" he has for Lionel are honestly really fun and make this episode more enjoyable. The episode overall is one of the highlights of the fifth season of Smallville for me. There are surprises, thrills and scares. The acting is consistently solid and the writing is good and the pacing is good. The cast always makes the episode as a whole, one thing I love about Smallville, all the main stars are really good characters, even Lana, who can be annoying sometimes. Clark, Lex, and Chloe are also really great in this episode. Lex Luther is honestly brilliant in this series, Michael Rosenbaum is easily my favourite actor to portray Lex. Tom Welling is a superb Clark Kent. I love the fact that the series is becoming Superman so much more than I would if it were while he is Superman. But a Metropolis series has always interested me - the best thing we have got since Smallville ended was the brief clip with Welling in the CW crossover. This episode is my third favourite of the fifth season, standout characters: Lionel, Martha, Clark, Lex, Chloe Rating: 9.6/10
