The finale of the 5th season
chazygray15 May 2006
The end finale marks an important part in the generation of smallville, no longer will directors and producers be able to waiver there actions brought about in the Finale. Smallville has just hit the biggest change that it will endure, and the only certain thing is that it will never be the same. Smallvile is evolving into the Superman story that everyone has expected, what lies before our favourite characters, Clark, Chloe and Lana is uncertain, however we do know that Clark has to return, and how and when and who he returns as is a mystery waiting to be unveiled to the smallville fans. All smallville fans will be eager in anticipation of what the future brings to there favourite show.

another of Superman's greatest enemies arrives
justinweithers19 August 2008
for all this time, Clark's greatest Nemesis has been the one person he tried so hard to be good friends with: lex luthor. now an even greater evil has arrived, the kryptonian warlord General Zod. at he beginning of the season a ship crashes, that contains 3 disciples, 2 krptonian generals, and the superman villain Milton fine(brianiac). his initial purpose on earth was to gain Clark's trust so he could lure him into a trap to give his master,Zod, a host body so he can exist outside the phantom zone, which is currently located int he fortress. however when briniac discovers Clark's resistance, he changes strategies and chooses lex to be zods vessel. realizing this, Clark's seeks out jor-el for help, jor-el gives him a dagger to kill lex before zod can consume him. however Clark's moral upbringing disallows him from killing anyone and instead turns the dagger on on fine, damaging the fortress and releasing zod from his imprisonment.

Zod is my favorite superman villain, because of his ambition and cunning, this episode is prelude to another episode, where Micheal rosenbaum(lex luthor) playing 2 of Superman's enemies. although i wasn't in favor of the idea, but it is zod so i'll go along with it 10/10

The end of something new!
Muggen8526 August 2006
Smallville has came to an end ones more, this has been the best season ever. With the 100th episode, the death of Jonathan Kent and Tom Wellings direction debut. And know we have came to the season finale, and I much say that this was the best cliffhanger ever on Smallville. Zod has returned, the world is about to fall apart and Clark has been sucked into the phantom Zone. Lana doesn't know that Lex isn't Lex, Martha and Lois is in grave danger 10.000 feet in the air and what happened to Chloe and Lionel in Metroplis. Every thing is good about this episode, the script the acting (as usual) and the greatest season finale ever on Smallville. TO BE CONTINUED!

The Climax of a Great Series
claudio_carvalho10 July 2007
After "being prepared" by Fine, Lex is abducted in a field by a strange light. Jor-el gives a dagger to Clark and advises him to destroy Lex, who would be the vessel of Zod outside the Phantom Zone. Martha travels with Lois to Washington in an airplane of the Luthorcorp. When Zod is released, he possesses Lex Luthor body and traps Clark in the Phantom Zone; Fine unleashes a powerful computer virus, creating chaos on Earth; Lois and Martha faint in the airplane without oxygen; and Chloe and Lionel are attacked by a raged crowd.

The distributor of Smallville uses the usual subterfuge and ends this excellent series in its climax, leaving the fans anxiously waiting for the conclusion of the episode in the next season on DVD. In my opinion, this procedure shows a total lack of respect with the viewers. This episode ends with all the characters in difficult situations: Clark is imprisoned in the Ghost Zone; his unethical mother that accept favors from a huge corporation, together with Lois, have passed out in a plane piloted by a replica of Fine; Chloe and Lionel are under an attack of a group of people; and the dark Lex in now the evil Zod. My vote is nine.

On par with Season 3
themanofhope29 October 2016
Smallville Season 5 is a huge step up from Season 4 and is much better than seasons 1 and 2. The season just had so much going for it. The show started introducing other DC superheroes like Aquaman and Cyborg, the first 3 episodes kicked in a small story arc with Clark losing and regaining his powers and the consequences he must face, the 100th episode was jaw dropping, Brainiac was an amazing villain for the season, Lex was truly becoming a threat and Clana was a lot less annoying in this season and kind of interesting Their were only 4 filler episodes but one of them was truly horrendous. The episode where Lana goes to the Vampire University was really bad and honestly reeked of a mega brain fart. Otherwise the season was amazing and completely washed out that horrible taste left in our mouths from season 4 while exciting us for what is to come. The season finale was so heart pounding and probably (so far haven't seen seasons 6-10) the second best after season 3 which is a really great spot to be at. The end with Metropolis burning down as chaos erupts and Lex being turned into Zod's vessel while Clark was thrown into the Phantom Zone was just so inexplicably good that barely any other episode of the show could top it.

If you decide to watch this spectacular show (although some episodes can make you say WTF) definitely buy or somehow watch Season 5. You won't regret it at all. Season 5 of Smallville gets a 9/10.

Season Five: A Tale of Two Halves (8/10 stars)
zkonedog3 July 2019
Coming off a fourth season in which the show had lost its way a bit, Smallville needed a reset. Right from the jump of season five, that was immediately apparent-and wildly successful. But after a 12-episode run that was clearly the most inspired in the show's canon to this point, the back half of episodes drops off precipitously.

Simply put, the first 12 episodes of S5 are exactly what Smallville needed. They included such threads as...

-Clark's (Tom Welling) de-powering for a time, allowing for a legitimate relationship with Lana (Kristin Kreuk) without all the "will they, won't they" drama.

-The Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) state Senator run, which put he and Martha (Annette O'Toole)-two character highlights--on center stage again.

-Chloe (Allison Mack) obtaining a Daily Planet post-exactly what was needed to refresh her character.

-A pivot towards the Kryptonian angle with the introduction of new character Milton Fine (James Marsters).

-Perhaps the single greatest holiday-themed episode ("Lexmas") in the history of dramatic television, exquisitely showcasing Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and his continuing dark-side turn.

Sure, there was the "Lana turns into a sorority vampire" clunker and the gratuitous Lois (Erica Durance) sex-appeal spectacular "Exposed", but overall this was leaps-and-bounds the best stretch of episodes in show history to date. It all culminates in "Reckoning", the show's 100th episode and an absolute treatise in plot/character arc summation. The show's shining moment, to be sure.

If I were able to stop my S5 review after those 12 eps, it would be a solid 9/10 stars. Sadly, the season ran 22 episodes-and most of those remaining were absolute clunkers.

From episodes 13-20, my star ranking on each did not exceed 6/10. There are multiple reasons for this (such as, say, a strange turn for Lionel (John Glover)), but the biggest culprit was the usual bugaboo for this show: falling back into the Clark/Lana angst. This ground has been covered so many times that it is patently ridiculous for it to be even a fraction of Smallville's emotional arc-yet that is exactly what transpires. The only good thing it accomplishes is setting up a Lex/Lana pairing that crackles because of the chemistry between the actors. But in large part, the re-focus on Clark and Lana dancing around each other is so wearisome as to be sickening.

Fortunately, the final two episodes of S5 are quite strong and let things play out on a high note-including a cliffhanger ending that will leave Superman film canon fan with jaws agape. Because of that, I'm able to give this overall season an 8/10 score and declare it the best of Smallville's campaigns so far. It certainly recovered nicely from the high school fatigue of S4 and charted a new course in terms of sets and character arcs. Yet, the much-too-easy fallback position of "Clark/Lana drama" was severely disappointing and curbed an experience that could have very easily ranked in the upper echelon of my favorite TV seasons ever.

Not as spectacular as I expected it to be.

Warning: Spoilers
Clark is clearly at a stage of his journey, where he learns from his mistakes. And it's a pain to watch. It makes him look self righteous and thick, for having suspicions on everyone, and still making the wrong choices. After Fade, which was only interesting for putting an end to whatever claims he had over Lana. The two hours season finale, suggested a grand finale, in its first half in particular. Unfortunately, the showdown between Clark and Lex was underwhelming, and I'm still not sure if the virus Fine injected Lex, didn't also heighten his resentment towards Clark. But maybe I'm wrong. Clark doing the opposite of what he should've, was pretty clear. He's a dummy, and I laughed when he got catapulted into the phantom zone by Zod. On the other hand, killing the vessel, meant killing Lex, so maybe writers were also out of ideas, to resuscitate him next season. Who knows? Because apparently, he still died when Zod took his place... Lex/Zod kissing Lana just because, was great. Chloe doing the same thing with Clark, not so much. It was awkward, and Lionel saving her from the enraged crowd didn't end good for them. And showed once again the Lana/Lex duo, is far more effective in crisis situations. Lois and Martha being stuck in a crashing airplane, was too similar to season 2 finale. But I still got invested in the scene, and was disappointed when Lois couldn't reach the oxygen masks. The bird's eye view of metropolis, before we saw Dumbo Clark screaming inside the floating rectangle, which made me laugh also. Looked too computerized. But that last shot is still very effective, and makes you want to return « next season ».

By that point, it's clear Smallville is one of those series, which quality decreased over the years, and simply followed a pre-established pattern, until the story come full circle. To me, the best years of the show are already behind, and I would rank each of the WB seasons, in its « alphabetical » order.

Next Season
jwstewartii12 June 2006
I personally think next season will be the last. Superman Returns hits the screen this month. If it is a success, Smallville may go on to yet another season, but I doubt it. Clark is now approaching his transformation into Superman.

Next season will probably answer questions about Chloe and Lana, maybe even Pete. Chloe and Pete know his secret. If they are not in the movie, I suspect they will be eliminated in Smallville.

We may also see more interaction between Lois and Clark, and Lana may become more distant. I also imagine Lex will "forget" what he knows about Clark, and Lionel will die next season.
