A bit contrived but fun

How the school could ever justify a trip to hand out at the mall is pretty tough to believe and makes for a contrived plot. However, considering how much fun and well written it was, it was still well worth seeing.

The show begins with Quinn badgering her parent to go to the mega-mall, the Mall of the Millennium. But they say NO, as she's already spent a fortune on clothes. In an odd twist, Daria's stupid economics teacher has decided to take her class to the same mall! Why? I have no idea. There, the girls have lots of adventures--as well as discover Quinn there, as she's ditching school with her Fashion Club friends.

All in all, there are plenty of nice moments but it's not among the better episodes of the show. Good but far from great.

A trip to the mall

As this episode opens Quinn is pestering her parents to take her to the Mall of the Millennium but they tell her she has spent enough money lately. By an amazing coincidence Daria's economics teacher announces that the class will be going on a trip to that exact mall for their next class. Daria isn't too keen on the idea and buy the time they arrive she is literally sick. The class goes to see the manager and he asks them about their opinion of the mall; Daria realises that they are being used as part of an unpaid focus group and it takes a $20 token for each class member to prevent them from creating a scene. As Daria and Jane go to get something to eat they meet somebody unexpected; Quinn... this gives Daria an opportunity for blackmail that can't be missed!

This was a rather fun episode; it is always enjoyable to see Daria getting the better of her younger sister. With the whole class going on the trip laughs were also provided by the sleazy Upchuck and Brittany and Kevin... what happened when they were told to investigate the effects of shoplifting were fairly inevitable but it was funny as only one of them thought it meant they should actually steal something! Overall this might not be a classic episode but it is still worth watching.

Shoppin' With Daria

This is a classic episode! Totally unforgettable and full of great lines.

The mall is a fantastic place to put Daria. She's so out of place in this hell and reacts accordingly. It really goes to show how insane our everyday lives are if you take the time to examine the ants scuttling around shopping complexes. Encapsulates suburban dread and plastic paradises.

To add to this perfect setting we also get a proper look at the newly formed Fashion Club. A staple of the series.

Also, they play the song Your Woman by White Town. One of the best songs of the 90s. Adds to the mood.
