- When Ally becomes bored of the piano after three lessons by Marie, Ray decides to give the former a lesson about not quitting, as he doesn't want her to lose interest so quickly. He asks Marie to teach him the piano again.
- Ally doesn't want to take piano lessons. She runs into the scene yelling "no" to Marie. Marie was giving Ally the piano lessons, but Ally says that it's boring and she doesn't want to do it any more. Ray recalls the time when he was a boy and sat at the piano with his mother. He enjoyed it because, while playing piano together, his mother was "nice". But as he got older, he gave it up and hadn't played for a long time. So, to set a good example for Ally, Ray heads over to his parents' house so that Marie can teach him again how to play the piano. During the lesson, Marie realizes how much Raymond had forgotten over the years. So she gets upset because she has to go back to the basics of music. Even though Ray is annoyed that she's upset with his stupidity, he gives in and bears through the lesson. The end of the episode has Ray playing a song while the family sits around the piano and listens.
- Ally decides to quit her piano lessons with Marie. Ally finds Piano boring and doesn't want to play the instrument anymore. Marie gets upset and leaves when Debra asks her to let it go for that day. Debra is OK if Ally does not want to take piano lessons. She does not want to force Ally. Ray says that Ally might be great at piano and that she needs to stick with it to find out if she is any good. And to encourage her not to quit, Ray tells Ally that he used to take piano lessons from Marie but can't admit to her that he quit as well. Ray later admits to Debra that he quit since Frank made fun of Ray for playing the piano. According to Frank, boys should be playing ball and stuff. Ray says that Marie was a really good teacher. She loved the music. Debra suggests that Ray should take more piano lessons from Marie, just to show Ally. So that Ray can set an example for Ally.
Ray asks Marie to give him some piano lessons so he can play something for Ally. Ray says that Ally should not give up piano so fast. Marie is beyond happy to have Ray back into her piano fold.
But Ray has forgotten all the keys, and so Marie brings out the practice books. Ray has to start with the orange book, earn his way to the blue book, then the purple book and then the brown book. But Ray can't even remember the basics and Marie is depressed as she felt Ray had sensitivity and delicate fingers and would have made a great piano player, had he stuck to it.
That's when Frank comes out and Ray confronts him for not encouraging his piano lessons. Ray says that this was the main reason why he quit his piano lessons in the first place. Frank, on the contrary, says he did his job by keeping Ray away from the piano and getting him interested in sports. According to Frank Ray now earns a living in sports as a sportswriter. Frank says that Ray should be thanking him for helping him make a decent career. Ray says that he could have done music and sports.
Marie loved music, but her own fingers were short and stubby. She wanted to impart her knowledge to Ray and Robert. But Robert used to get nosebleeds every time he sat down for a piano lesson. But Marie tells Ray that Frank didn't get Ray to quit the piano. Ray himself wanted to spend time with the other boys and spit around and Marie wanted to hold him back. But she is disappointed as Ray could have been something in his life. Ray begs Marie to teach him the piano so that Ally could have music in her life. Marie agrees.
Marie and Ray bond over the lessons and Robert decides to take up drumming again. Ray plays the piano for the whole family, but Ally wants to play ball with Grandpa Frank.
