Season One's Best Comedic Episode
katierose29518 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode doesn't add a lot to the mythology arc this season, but it is just so fun that you need to see it. Basically, it has to do with the power of thoughts and beliefs. How something can become real if enough people just think it is. "Hell House" also shows the brothers relationship in a more lighthearted way. The two of them goof around all episode, playing pranks on each other and basically being adorable. All in all, you shouldn't skip this episode.

This episode revolves around a haunted house in Texas. Basically, there's a deserted shack, where a man supposedly killed himself years before. Teenagers are seeing ghosts, being attacked and even dying. Sam & Dean investigate and realize that the stories the kids tell are all different. The ghost doesn't seem to be following any rules or connected to any real person. And the some of the symbols painted on the walls of the haunted house are from a "Blue Oyster Cult" album cover. Sam & Dean also become involved in a escalating war of pranks on each other, just to pass the time.

It turns out that that there's a Thought Demon a work in the haunted house. A local website, Hellhound'slair.com, has posted the story of the ghost and people all over the world are reading about it. Their thoughts and belief are giving the ghost power. Sam & Dean meet up with the dorky guys who run the website and trick them into posting fake information on the ghost. They're hoping that if people BELIEVE the ghost has weakness, then it will. Unfortunately, the website goes down and the ghost is still powerful. So, Sam & Dean improvise by burning down the house with the ghost trapped inside. Then call a truce on their pranks against each other and trick the website boys into thinking that the website is being optioned as a Hollywood film. They website boys leave town, and Sam & Dean drive off.

It's interesting to note that this is the first episode where Sam has really initiated the hunting. (Discounting the times that he was personally involved with the victims, like "Skin.") He usually follows along after Dean on these jobs, doing research and putting things together. But, in "Hell House," he's the one insisting they investigate the website and haunting. After last episode, "Shadow," Sam seems a bit more committed to hunting things and saving people, even if they have nothing to do with Jessica's murder. His desire to go back to college seems to have been suppressed again, as he focuses on his job with Dean.

The best parts of this episodes revolve around Sam & Dean torturing each other. Their pranks are pretty hilarious, and -if you have a sibling- fairly accurate. Their gluing each other to things, putting itching powder in clothing, etc... The Nair in the shampoo is a little extreme, perhaps, but it's just a funny image. And I love Dean sticking the spoon in Sam's mouth while he's asleep and then taking a photo of it with his camera phone. It's just a great scene. And Dean "double daring" Sam to drink that jar full of ooze makes me smile every time I see it. He looks so hopeful. I also like the Hellhound'slair.com guys. They add some comedy to the show with their belief that they're the "real" experts when it comes to supernatural stuff. Dean's so dismissive of them and Sam keeps laughing. It cracks me up. Plus, lines just don't come funnier than, "Sweet Lord of the Rings!" I also like the scene where Sam & Dean have to question the teenage victims and they all have different stories on what the ghost looked like. It's edited so that each story contradicts the other. It's very cool. Finally, just burning down the haunted house to stop the ghost, is just a really clever idea.

On the down side, since when does electricity mess with EMF readings? Dean's used it as an air plane hangers (see "Phantom Traveler"), in people's houses (see "Nightmare"), and outside (see "Scarecrow"). It always seems to work just fine. Also, I'm with Dean. I'd rather face a house filled with ghosts, than a house filled with rats any day. I hate rats. **shudder**

My favorite part of the episode: Four little words. WWBD: What Would Buffy Do?

One of the best so far!
mm-396 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
One of the best so far, in the series. I really like this show. A mix between the old Night Stalker and X files. I hope they make new shows soon. I believe there was a similar script on the Night Stalker. I watch the videos of the old show. The idea of burning the corpses, and the picture is excellent script work. I like the tribute the show has for the people informed about pop culture A bit of this script is a throw back to 80's horror. The girl the two guys the police reminds me of a 80's Nightmare on Elmstreet script. 10 out of 10. Tape this show. Like the classic rock soundtrack. I wonder how the producers will keep the series fresh for next year?

WWBD?! What would Buffy do?
zombiehigh1830 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
What makes "Supernatural" different from other shows is that the writers have the smarts to ease up the atmosphere once in a while with some light monster of the week episodes loaded with funny one liners in between, away from the running story arc. So the casual viewers won't get bored and the die-hard fans can have a break every now and then from the melodramatic tension of the series theme. "Hell house" is not one of the high lights of the series, (I'm sure many will disagree with me) but it certainly had lots of funny moments.

The brothers pulling pranks on each other gives them life, away from the brooding attitude they were pulling (especially Sam). This episode shows they can have fun sometimes with each other like normal siblings. They also come across some amateur funny wanna be Ghost busters.(Harry and Ed were a nice addition to the show's supporting cast, But I didn't like them at all on the season 3 "Ghostfacers" episode which I hate to say was the worst in the whole series).

It may not add to the series mythology but watch it for fun.

Sam and Dean go to a town with a house haunted by a farmer and encounter two paranormal investigators, who really know nothing about demon hunting
zoot_riot30 October 2006
The best episode from season 1, has everything. So funny, makes me laugh every time I watch it. Great music in it too! They add in the paranormal investigators, whom are absolutely hilarious, the pranks add to the amusement. A good story line, original, and each of the characters are original in their own way. The teens are extremely typical, and the investigators are complete geeks, it's great! Sam and Dean pulling pranks on each other is a great idea, showing that they are brothers, it helps thicken their relationship. They're pranks are also great, and relate to the characters. (ex. Dean's hand stuck to the bottle, spoon in Sam's mouth)

I LOVE Supernatural but this is NOT Richardson, TX.
rastercaster131 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
In the present day, at least.

Maybe 50 years ago.

The episode is great, (see others for better reviews of it), but Richardson is a full-blown suburb of Dallas now.

There simply are no woods or old farmhouses anymore, I'm sorry.

Richardson was a separate town at one time, just like all of the other towns around Dallas, (and I'm sure, towns all over the U.S.), but the thought of there being anything but concrete, town-homes and apartment complexes is laughable, even when the episode was filmed. And even when they say "a few hours north of Richardson", you're not even in Richardson anymore.

They should have said "Mineola" or "Hawkins", plenty of woods and haunted old farmhouses they could have went with.

(I'm just now catching up on old episodes and had to laugh, sorry)

It's a great episode, a nice respite from the heavy stuff before, but it's like they just picked a random location from a hat.

Having said all of this, the over-arching idea that maybe many of the monsters that they have been hunting were just, after all, the result of people believing in them is perfect and archetypal.

How many monsters DO we create just by being scared of the idea of them?

With fear being the strongest emotion right up there with love, hate, jealousy and anger, how do we really know that the monsters we fear...

...are not really just ourselves?

One of the better season 1 episodes
CubsandCulture6 September 2019
While the show is mostly focused for the family dynamics with horror as metaphor, Supernatural does have an undercurrent of meta commentary/satire on the horror genre. This episode is the first in this vein. It is the first episode that was a comedy. The (not yet named this) ghostfacers of Travis and Ed are gem comedic characters; apart from that the prank war the boys play on each other is expected and a lot of fun. The central point in this episode of how the lore becomes real because people believe in it is nice bit of commentary.

This is one of the most fun episodes of the show for several years.

The start of the comedic tone?
shwetafabm23 May 2020
This is one of the funnier eps, we have seen humour in the show mainly from Dean, not really the situation or other characters, just his sarcastic zingers or when he says something and gets hit or shot. We see more humour in this ep for the first time and their brotherly relationship.

One of the Silliest Episodes
claudio_carvalho24 December 2006
When Sam reads about a haunted house in Richardson, Texas, in a website, he convinces the reluctant Dean to drive to the place. They investigate the controversial witnesses of the spirit of Mordechai Murdoch, a man who hanged his six daughters and himself in the cellar of his farm in the Great Depression, but they do not find any evidence of truth in the story. Later, they disclose that it was a prank of two teenagers, but the legend of the fiend became real due to the belief of the readers of the site.

"Hell House" is probably the silliest episode of "Supernatural" so far. The story is a joke with the weird friends of Mulder in "X-Files" and is practically a comedy, totally different from the last episodes. My vote is six.

Brothers against Evil: The Legend of Hype House
Coventry25 February 2009
Even with TV-show formats that you glorify unconditionally in general, there are always some episodes that you look forward to seeing more than the other ones. I loved practically all episodes of "Supernatural" thus far, but based on my own personal favorite horror movie themes, I mostly anticipated the ones featuring abandoned asylums, driverless vehicles and – like the case here – haunted houses. I'm a huge sucker for "House" movies, particularly the oldies like "The Old Dark House", "The Legend of Hell House" and William Castle's "House on Haunted Hill". And even though this episode of "Supernatural" didn't fully live up to my expectations, it is yet another vivid and imaginative installment with a solid script, good scenery and a wicked sense of humor. Wandering around in Richardson, Texas, Sam & Dean Winchester decide to investigate the local legend of a haunted farmhouse. They're not the only ones, however, as a duo of geeky amateur paranormal investigators (hosting their very own website and everything) continuously get in their way. But there's something strange about the house itself as well. According to the legend the house is inhabited by a the ghost of a farmer who hung his six daughters in the 1930's and now still strings up any woman daring to enter, but by the time of their second visit, the ghost suddenly transformed into an axe-wielding psychopath with slit wrists. There's a fairly unpredictable twist halfway through the episode that doesn't fit into any traditional horror pattern, but it's definitely innovating. Apart from original, "Hell House" is one of the – if not – THE funniest episode of series 1, with Sam and Dean constantly playing pranks on each other and the stereotypically goofy Ghostbusters duo Harry Spangler and Ed Zeddmore.
