Thrilling premiere!
and_mikkelsen23 October 2023
This episode kicks off season two with great action, tension and emotions!

The episode starts not long after season one ended as they travel to the earth kingdom to find a master in eartbending while Aang is haunted by dreams!

As the episode explores the Avatar State, Aang is forced to face himself cause of how mighty and terrorfying him and his powers are doing the avatarstate! We also get some vital information about the avatarstate!

This episode also introduces Azula who is pretty close at being the BEST antagonist in the show! She is ruthless and will do anything to achieve her goal, as things are either perfect.. or not! She enjoys controlling those around her!

Overall it feels like an improvement both in terms of story, characters and action! This show is only gonna get better!

One of My Favorite Episodes Ever

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is honestly everything I loved about the Avatar state and its usage. Aang is scared of it and using it because of the WAY it's used currently. When Aang used it in the Southern Air Temple, it was out of rage. And that perfectly describes the way he uses it in this episode, and later on in the Desert.

The Avatar state earlier in the show was more of an outlet of anger for Aang more than using it for its actual purpose, and I love that this show makes it seem like that for a 12 year old boy who doesn't know what it's actual use is yet, so much that Avatar Roku has to come in spiritually, and show Aang what it is meant for and warns him that it could potentially be fatal to him if he's not careful while in the state. Which is a little foreshadowing to the end of the season.

I love everything this episode does, including Azula's introduction to her being a new secondary antagonist for the rest of the show. Also brings in a new arc for Zuko being a fugitive with his uncle. Out of the 3 seasons of Avatar, Book 2 is definitely my favorite. It's darker, it's more dramatic, and has alot more emotional moments.

Too Crazy

Warning: Spoilers
After the Water Tribe Siege, Aang and co. Return to the Earth Kingdom for help on his earthbending journey. They encounter a nutjob Earth general who believes forcing Aang's avatar state is paramount to achieving war victory, but doesn't understand nuances of the Avatar Stare or care about Aang's safety. Zuko also has powerful developments in his parallel struggles, as he and Irho are now enemies of the Fire Nation.

One of my favorite running themes in Avatar is that even with "allies" you must be extremely mindful of who you place trust in and that is the moral here. Basically, right off the bat in these season we get amazing character moments, important lore and high tensions are abound. A formidable start.

An Instant Improvement

The first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender had many strong episodes contained within ("The Southern Air Temple", "Avatar Roku", "The Storm", "The Blue Spirit", "The Deserter", "The Siege of the North"), but it had plenty bringing it down too--mainly there were certain points where it became clear that it wasn't quite plumbing the depths of its subject matter, that its status as a Nickelodeon show was holding it back on some level. Come Season 2's premiere, and that's all changed. While still a children's program to be sure, "The Avatar State" establishes a clear focus for Book 2 while displaying stronger writing, sharper humor, and more interesting characterization across the board. It signaled "Avatar: The Last Airbender"'s ascension to the uppermost echelon of Western Animation children's programming.

The Good

1) This episode introduces Princess Azula, the new villain 2) Everything about Prince Zuko and Uncle Iroh 3) The mature themes 4) The exploration of The Avatar State 5) The comedy 6) The main antagonist of this episode

The Bad 1) We didn't have set-up from before this episode that Aang wanted King Bumi to teach him Earthbending 2) The fact that I can't quote my favourite part of the episode without revealing a spoiler.

3) I'm padding this review because I can't reveal much more about this episode without spoilers (though that's really because of IMDB rather than this episode.)

It's really good.
