Daria becomes a writer...
planktonrules7 March 2011
Daria is challenged by Mr. O'Neill to stop reading all the time and start writing--and using various people around her as characters in it. In a nice twist, you get to see various stories from Daria's imagination act out the stories--ranging from stories that clearly suck to those that are poignant. The stupid ones are pretty funny and the poignant ones might be touching to most--I thought it was a bit too sticky sweet (fine...I guess I AM a cynic at times). In the process Daria learns about herself and shows some signs of being human. The best thing about all this is that the episode is very different from the rest--it is original and clever.

By the way, this episode is a milestone for me and I wish I had more to say about it or something profound. It marks my 10,000th review on IMDb and I guess it's time I now consider getting a life...or not. Maybe I'll get to that after I finish re-watching the "Daria" series.

Daria must write a story
Tweekums5 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Daria's class is told to select a book from a list and write about its morals Daria makes the mistake of telling Mr O'Neill that she has already read every book on the list. This leads to her being given a special assignment; she must write her own story featuring people she knows in a fictional setting. At first her ideas are amusing but hardly original... the first to are clearly based on 'The Graduate' and one of Jane Austin's works. She can't think of anything that really says what she wants it to. Eventually a conversation with her mother leads her to write about how she hopes the family will be when she is grown up.

While this isn't one of the best episodes it does have a good number of laughs; the story has hardly started when Jake's attempts at cooking lead to hilarity! The stories Daria writes are for the most part funny but as she rightly thinks not that original and I suspect many of the laughs rely to a degree on the viewer knowing what is being referenced. The eventual story she comes up with is mildly amusing though a little too schmaltzy for my liking... it made Helen shed tears of happiness which should say it all!
