A terrible, manipulative and mercenary show but not any worse or better than the countless others out there
bob the moo17 February 2007
In January 07 the Times ran a story about ITV's "Quizmania" being ruled guilty of breaching broadcasting rules by regulator Ofcom. The judgement was based on the fact that the quiz was not being conducted fairly and centred around a specific question of "things that you find in a woman's handbag". The answers were: contact lenses, mittens, umbrella, ibuprofen, driving license, dog, rubber band, false teeth, dog biscuits, balaclava and Rawlplugs (the plastic things you put in a wall to hold a screw in place). Unsurprisingly Ofcom ruled these "unreasonable answers to what appeared to be a straightforward question".

Of course anyone who has seen more than a few minutes of this type of shows will not be surprised by this because this is how this works – the answers seem obvious, it should be easy to grab £200 and get out right? Wrong. The Times found that on one four hour episode of ITV's "The Mint" picked at random, that 400,000 calls tried to get through but only 1 in 400 got further than a recorded message telling them to try again. Then consider the odds of answering the handbag question correctly and you start to understand the game. The game is money. Not giving it out but taking it in that is.

The channel ITV Play made £9 million in the first six months on air. It didn't make this by giving it away, it made it by high premium phone calls and low winning odds combined with the constant suggestion that it is easy. This is done by the presenters egging on the viewers and the questions often seeming to be quite easy and obvious. Of course the reality is you will struggle to get through and even when you do your answer of "lipstick" or "makeup" won't cut it! Of course people have always made money off this type of scam but it is the mercenary and careless way it is done that bothers me with these things. Very little of that money they make is spent on sets and the delivery as it looks cheap. They are all the same with the quiz on half the screen and a presenter on the other, hovering behind a desk or wandering round a studio. Some of the sets are laid out like a plush room, others just have the bare minimum to get back. More often than not the presenters will be young woman looking at the camera with bright eyes and talking enticingly. I tell you though, it is a skill and some of them are brilliant at it. Ever had a conversation that is all small talk, you have time to fill and you're struggling? Now imagine doing that to a camera. For hours and hours. Several times a week. Some are terrible but often they are good at it. Of course as a skill I'd rather be a dentist or something like that and, although they do what they do, they are still grating to watch and I do hope they get paid enough to cover the pain they must feel about what they do – they earn every penny.

Overall then, a terrible, manipulative and mercenary show but not any worse or better than the countless others out there. Hundreds of thousands of people watch these shows and call them religiously but nobody buys a lottery ticket because it is a nice colour. So it is here – nobody pretends that it is good entertainment or responsible, well put together quizzes; rather it is viewed by "it could be me" types and run by "it's always going to be us" types. Makes you hark back fondly to the days of 4 channels and pre-24/7 broadcasting.

Quizmania is awesome

What the reviewer a few paragraphs below fails to tell you is that was one game out of the 1000's Quizmania broadcasted. Okay the answers were slightly odd and they held their hands up. Quizmania ran from 2005-2008 on ITV and ran loads of games that were easy to get the answers too. Like super easy at times. So to quote stuff The Guardian writes and pass it off as a review is silly.

The show was like for 4 hours - 6 hours at a time, there were loads of fun games and they switched them when they got boring. ( Unlike other channels or shows.) They got viewers interacting via emails, did competitions, showed photos of viewers and did everything they could to make it a compelling, wonderful and interactive show on so many levels.

Besides that it was actually fun to watch. Just go to Youtube and type Quizmania in to see the many great moments of this show.

One of the Best Game Shows around
andyr-928 February 2006
This is one of those programmes you start to watch for a while and it starts to suck you in. Quizmania is a very professional, Funny, highly addictive game show that is on the SKY Digital satellite Channel (UK & Ireland) on Sky Channel number 139 (Life Showcase) starting at 9PM (UK Time) every evening (UPDATE 1st APRIL 2006 - No longer available on this channel) and just recently has been broadcasting on the UK ITV1 Channel at around 12 Midnight or 1am and some nights carries on until 5am!!

(UPDATE 1st APRIL 2006 - No Longer on ITV1, Now on ITV2)

Made by Fremantle Media (Who also produce the popular show 'The X-Factor' in the UK) and has a very good selection of presenters who are all most enjoyable to watch and help the show make it as popular and as entertaining as it is. Watch out for zany Greg Scott (or Greggles) as he likes people to call him, he used to be a warm up man for the audience for popular TV shows in the UK before they went onto the air. He is a very witty man and also quick and sharp with his wit - he is a favourite with a lot of callers into the show but don't get me wrong there is more to the show than just his presenting and the other presenters are equally as entertaining.

About the Programme. Well its a game show shown on Television with Cash prizes on offer Sometimes early on in the evening the most you might win is 300.00 UK Pounds the least you could win is 50.00 UK Pounds. Sometimes there is a tower game which require you (the phone caller to the show)to fill in a blank word or name a popular type of fruit say, the easy answers are normally placed at the bottom of the board and are worth around 50 pounds and as the answers get more up to the top of the board the answers can be quite obscure at the top of the board but this reflects in you getting a substantial cash prize.

When the show 'transfers' to ITV1 at Midnight* the cash prizes get much larger and normally if you answer a question right the presenter will lead you to a plasma TV screen with a cheque with 5000.00 UK pounds and 2 blank spaces at the end of the cheque (the pence) if the caller gives the correct amount of the pence they win the 5000 Pounds on top of what they have already won.

*(UPDATE 1st APRIL 2006 - Now Broadcasts on ITV2 from 1AM Every Night)

To play along callers are encouraged to phone into the show (number up on the screen) and be over 18 to play. Calls cost 60pence whether the caller is selected or not to go through to the studio and speak to the presenter who is live on screen and give them a correct answer and win the cash. Callers who phone up go into a pool with other callers if they are Lucky enough to be chosen they will be asked (by an automated answering device) to hold on the telephone line whilst you get transferred straight through to the studio and speak directly with the presenter who is currently presenting the show on screen. Thats it, directly through to the studio if you are successful, no speaking to an operator or anyone first.

Along the show the presenters will tell jokes, and chat with the camera operators and also read emails from viewers that email into Quizmania and also show photos that viewers have emailed in of themselves. Every now and again the camera crew will step away from operating the camera's to have a bit of banter with the presenter (look out for a camera operator called Flash, he is on some nights) he is crazy and in his spare time he is a lead singer in his own rock group called King Lizzard. You get the feeling that everyone is one great big happy family working together there, well thats what it comes across as when you are watching the show.

This Quizmania game show has really taken off big time in the UK with its show getting longer and longer through the night on ITV1 - and you can find out why if you start watching it for around 15 minutes and start shouting out your answers at the TV screen and you want to stick with the show to see the remaining answers you can find yourself getting hooked when you should be going to bed. You find yourself staying awake throughout the night watching this game show and indeed every now and again you will get the presenters ask the callers what they are doing up so late and they will say that since Quizmania started that they cannot break off from watching it when they should be asleep! Every now and again you could get someone who wins 2 grand at 4am in the morning and the caller lets out a subdued yelp of excitement and the presenter will ask them to contain their excitement but the caller will say that they cant shout because the other half and the kids are fast asleep in bed or if they shout they will wake up the next door neighbours!! I strongly recommend if you have not seen this show yet to try and tune in and get to watch it you will feel the same as me that its a very enjoyable show, very well and cleverly done with very enjoyable funny presenters.

Andy.
